Armed Forces / which war would this be?
« on: Friday 28 January 22 01:16 GMT (UK)  »
I have come across this photo of 3 distant cousins in the Zealey family, I am fairly sure that it is prior to WW1 as one of them immigrated to Australia in 1912.  So can anyone identify what uniform and which war (if any) they relate to?  They would be UK uniforms.

World War One / Tug boat master in Royal Engineers?
« on: Friday 26 January 18 23:23 GMT (UK)  »
My GGG Cousin, Henry Albert Hogg.
I was going through his records on Ancestry and it looks like he may have been a tug boat master in the Royal Engineers in France in WW1.  He was posted to B.E.F. (BF7?) in Calais.  Would that be correct - what would a tug boat master be doing in WW1?
Any help would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Who were the parents of Alice Zealey?
« on: Thursday 09 October 14 00:15 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help sort this out, my GG Grandmother was
ALICE MARY ZEALEY  (who married Obed La Farre)
B": 1860 Shoreditch, Middlesex.
D: 1900 Epsom

From family information - ??? I know not the most reliable!
I have:
Father Joseph Zealey
B: 1836 Hoxton.

Mother Mary Ann Nunn
B 1825 Beddingham, Suffolk.

Married 24th March 1850  - but this would make Joseph 14 and Mary 26 - talk about a shotgun wedding!!!

Can anyone help me sort this lot out?

Surrey / Zealey (Zealy) death in Beddington
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 01:09 BST (UK)  »
I had a contact from a distant cousin, who is trying to find out about a death somewhere near 1927 in Beddington.

One of the family stories handed down was one of the Zealey family (who lived Richmond Road) committed suicide as he was heartbroken that my cousin's mother had not married him; he was apparently found dead in the nearby alleyway/footpath leading from Richmond Road.

If anyone has any clues as to where to search, we would love to know.  I have tried British newspapers online that I have access to from Australia, but have not found anything.  Unfortunatley we do not know his first name.

Thought some local knowledge may give us a better chance.

Cumberland / Captain George Fisher & maritime records.
« on: Thursday 27 March 14 00:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find some information, particularly about the maritime history of my GGGG Grandfather, Captain George Fisher, born in Workington, abt 1809.
I think the family was:
Wife: Jane,
Sons: William, Thomas Grayson, George Henry,
Daughters: Mary, Martha & Jane.

I'm not sure where to start to look for what ships he sailed in etc. I hope someone has some recommendations or starting points for me.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It looks like his son, Thomas Grayson Fisher jumped ship in Australia when he was an apprentice on the "Heather Bell" and he became a station overseer here.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / family portrait
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone do some restoration magic on this photo  (attached) and help me date it?  I was thinking around 1905 from the girl on the right's hairstyle and dress.
Also - any advice on trying to clean the original??

Can anyone look up, and possibly photograph for me the Aldershot News of June 14, 1913 for the obit of William Ellis, he died on 6th June 1913
The information I have about the obit came from the sale of his medals and is as follows:
See:
for his story and portrait. XI Hussar Journal, July 1913 for obituary. "Aldershot News ", June 14th 1913. " Sheldrake's Military Gazette ", Aldershot 31st August 1913. "The Bmad Arrow ", 17th October 1913

William was in the charge of the light brigade, and this would no doubt be in the obit.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Australia / When & where did Joseph Clark die?
« on: Thursday 13 June 13 03:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for some help with one of my ancestors, I can't find any confirmation of his birth or death.  What I do know is:
Born in Bendigo in 1866 (according to the Bendigo historical society), father was Edward Charles Clark, mother Mahala (nee Banks).  Parents travelled to Aust  around 1855 (separately).
He was a bit of a bad boy I think, several scrapes with the law in Bendigo around 1890, I think the family then packed him off to Sydney.
Married at least twice, firstly to Annie Elizabeth McKINLAY in 1869, then to Ruth PLOWRIGHT in 1899.
The family in Sydney seemed to be centred around Parramatta and Auburn in the 1900's.
That's about all I know of Joseph, if anyone can help me find his grave or date of death I would really appreciate it.  I don't know if he died in NSW or Vic.
Kind regards
Barb.
