Other Countries / Henry Pyne East India Merchant Calcutta 1790's
« on: Sunday 12 November 23 14:01 GMT (UK)  »
I know that one Henry Pyne was operating as an East India Merchant  in Calcutta in the 1780's, ref for example to importation of drinks etc. Quite soon after there are individuals with Indian first names  like Bhogbut Pyne and son Ranchund operating eg at the New China Bazar around 1810/14. Interested to know whether these might be Anglo/Irish/Indian descendants of Henry. There are still Pyne families in around Kolkata today that may all be linked

Somerset / Gordano Sources
« on: Tuesday 09 May 23 14:39 BST (UK)  »
My family history brickwall  concerns a family of blacksmiths (name of Pyne/Pine/Paine), in the Gordano area south of Bristol. I'm looking for advice on other sources , beyond the obvious - pre census , period c1790 - 1830, ie other than parish records, church accounts and tithe records. Particularly interested in Weston in Gordano, Tickenham and Walton in Gordano. Any thoughts on specific sources and where they may be held  - I have some familiarity with the Somerset Heritage Centre and Bristol Records office. Many thanks

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / Inhabitants of Cardington 1782
« on: Tuesday 21 December 21 13:39 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone is familiar with or has access to the Beds Historical Records Soc publication, 'inhabitants of Cardington 1782'. One of my ancestral families, the Hillyards were there around that time including x5 Great grandfather Samuel b c 1740 and wife Elizabeth (King I think). Just wondered what sort of info you can glean from the 1782 survey. Any info gartefully received especially in relation to Sam and family. His son James b 1769 will be my x4 GGrandfather.

Somerset Lookup Requests / St Andrews Cheddar - heraldry
« on: Sunday 21 November 21 12:02 GMT (UK)  »
I'd be very interested in advice on possible sources to both identify and explain the context of heraldic shields included in what I understand maybe 15th century stained glass in St Andrews Church, Cheddar. The family arms for the Pyne family - primarily a Devon family are included, along with some others which are less easy to identify. I've so far not come up with much by way of church histories or research into these windows. Nothing jumping out from the Somerset Archives on line catalogue. I would have thought someone will have in the past looked to understand the heraldic references here. While having a lot of background and records on the Pyne family in the wider South West, I've not come across early connections with Cheddar, so would be really interesting to uncover some new links.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Heraldic Stained Glass St Andrews Cheddar
« on: Friday 19 November 21 07:20 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all - Have come across  some heraldry in what I think is 15th century glass in St Andrews Cheddar. I am familiar with one part as it is the arms of Pyne (largely a Devon family) Gules, three pine apples or, between a chevron ermine. It is associated though with two I can't identify. One I think would be described as azure, a stag lodged argent. The other looks like Argent, three roundels gules between a chevron sable.  Would be really interesting to identify the other two arms here and see if I can find the branch of the Pyne's who clearly had some part to play in the Cheddar area.  I'll try and attach an image that shows the arms in three parts. The one in centre is unclear , but another [art of the window shows the blue shield and stag more clearly.

Somerset / Records associated with Property
« on: Sunday 02 May 21 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Interested in trying to find new family records - via association with a given property. I know my ancestors lived at the forge in Weston in Gordano from c 1807 to mid 19th century. Have the village 1837 tithe records and through that can identify the landlord - one Philip John Miles , a Bristol merchant and banker.  Any experience out there of trying to find estate records or tenancy documents associated with a given property?

Pembrokeshire / Pyne Family Haverfordwest
« on: Monday 05 April 21 16:20 BST (UK)  »
This is a bit of a broad ask - I've checked out the standard census and baptism records on Ancestry - it concerns three generations of 'Henry Pynes' in Haverfordwest.

One Henry Pyne born c 1772, died 1857 - he in one census was described as a 'portrait painter' - he married an Elizabeth Edmond in 1800 - though seemed to leave his estate to a servant , Maria Davies when he died in 1857 rather than his son.
His son Henry Edmond Pyne variously described himself as a 'Comedian' (on the baptism records of his children in the 1820's) though later became a policeman and was the chief constable at Haverfordwest in the 1840's. In charge of the lock up on 12 shillings a week.
His son, another Henry died  in the county Gaol in1868 after being sentenced to 7 days for vagrancy.
Looks to be an interesting tale here  - Artist, Comedian/policeman and vagrant - would love to flesh out the bones especially to try and work out where Henry senior came from.

I wonder if anyone has access to church records for Croydon in 1912. The Registry Office Entry has William marrying an Alicia Hill in the first quarter of 1912 in Croydon. Not sure of the church, but hoping to get a confirmation of William's father - William junior may be a brother of my Grandad Fred Pyne, son of William Henry (senior). Thanks

Bedfordshire / Elizabeth Case - Cardington
« on: Friday 15 May 20 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Am looking to trace back from an Elizabeth Case, born I think c 1817 in Cardington.  She married my x3 G Grandfather George Hillyard a rat catcher in Cardington in 1835. Her age is from Census entries. The online records seem to have a gap between 1812 and 1837 and not in Ancestry. Thanks
