Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 Register: column headings
« on: Tuesday 30 June 20 20:45 BST (UK)  »
I've found Great Great Aunt Rose in an institution in the 1939 Register.

Can anyone throw some light on the column headings?  Column 5 reads "O, V, S, P or I"  (Rose is recorded as I)

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Josiah Hammond 1861 census
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 16:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm having difficulty finding Josiah Hammond in the 1861 census.

Josiah was born in 1835 in Tuddenham, Suffolk, the son of William and Sophia Hammond.  I have found him in 1841 and 1851 and from 1871 - 1901. He died in 1902.

In 1841 and 1851, he is living with his parents in Tuddenham.

By 1871, Josiah is living in Quarry Bank, Dudley with his wife Mary Ann and children William (born 1868) George (born 1870) and Amy (born 1871).  Josiah and Mary were married on 2 June 1862 in the Dudley registration district, so it's possible that he was living in the area tin 1861, although as a policeman he seems to move around - in 1881 the family were living in Wombourne.

Can anyone help?

England / Voidable marriage?
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 14:26 BST (UK)  »
I've come across a marriage in 1891 where the bride was aged 20 and married under the name of her foster-parents. In the report of a subsequent court case, she alleged that she was not legally married as (a) she was a minor and parental consent was not given (b) the surname she was married under was not her legal name - and that this made the children of the marriage illegitimate.

As far as I can recall, this would have rendered the marriage voidable, but not void and that therefore the marriage was legal and valid until such time as a decree of nullity was issued, and that the children were therefore legitimate.  (The report of the case seems to bear this out, as an order for judicial separation was made).

Can anyone confirm whether I'm right?

Can any kind soul find where Emily Beatrice MELTON was in 1881?  She was born in 1871 in West Ham to Arthur Mackenzie MELTON and his wife Caroline. She may have been living with her uncle and aunt, George and Emily HEAKER (or HEAKEN) - but I can't find them in 1891, either!

(I have Emily on the 1871 census, and her subsequent marriage to Arthur Wellesey RENDELL, and then on all censuses to 1911 - it's just the 1871 entry I can't find).
