Australia / Sydney Suburb
« on: Tuesday 25 March 14 02:12 GMT (UK)  »
Godd afternoon,
-
I have just received my grandfather's Birth Certificate - Oswald James Hall McLean Howell.  He was born on the 20th April 1909.  His place of birth has an address of 163 Palmer Street (Tuesday).  His birth was registered as Sydney but there is no suburb where this Palmer Street is.  I was amused that they bothered putting the day of birth but not the Suburb.  Also his mother's maiden name is listed as Little - but was Liddell.
His parents Robert Howell and Isabel Jessie Liddell were married at the congregational Church Randwick.  Could someone please confirm a suburb of birth for my grandfather.  Many thanks Debbie

Kent / Kent Marriage
« on: Wednesday 19 September 12 10:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Could someone please direct me or help me with the following.  Through ancestry I have found the Marriage of a direct descendant.  However, it usually has the original parish register records when you find this listing.  This particular one doesn't.  I have the following marriage:-

Mary Ann Potter  to  John William Lane

Date  24th December, 1829

Place - West Wickham, Kent England.

Can someone tell me how I can find out what Church in West Wickham this would have been.

They were not Catholic.  I was very disappointed not to be able to see the parish Register in Ancestry.

Any help would be gratefully received.  I believe John William Lane was born  Kent and his wife baptised,  3rd October 1797 St Mary Magdalen Bermondsy.  Amazingly, I was able to obtain the original parish record for Mary Ann's baptism but not her marriage parish record to John Lane.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Kent / LANE family Lewisham Kent
« on: Monday 13 August 12 07:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks - hoping someone can shed some light on "A find"I have had.

Found our 4th great grandparent - John William Lane - baptised on the 26th December, 1794 -
St Mary, Lewisham Kent - father John Lane and mother Mary.

I was trying to read the original parish register which I found on Ancestry.  However, I am a little confused as to what I am looking at.  At the end of the line where the above information is written it has Botany Bay (I think that is what it says).  Could someone please advise me what or  where Botany Bay is.
Tried to search the web for Botany Bay but it comes up with a college in Kent and talks about slavery?

I am in Australia

Kind regards  Adcor

Monmouthshire / Thomas - Monmoushire or Glamorganshire
« on: Wednesday 13 June 12 06:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks - could someone please help with a bit of confusion.

On a wedding Certificate the bride has put her birthplace as Rumney Monmouthshire Wales - this was 1855 in Australia.

On this lady's death Certificate it has her birthplace as Rhymney Glamorganshire Wales.

She died in Australia aged 78yrs in 1915.

Could someone please explain the difference in these counties and why you think they were listed differently.  Her husband was the informant.

Thank you,

Hi everyone,

I have a fellow rootschat lady trying to post to Donegal for help - is there a problem with this site.

She is only new and has listed only a couple of surnames - is 2 or 3 enough.

She also had research in Armagh - that posting went through.

Thank you for your assistance

Australia / LANE Death
« on: Sunday 03 June 12 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Good Morning,

This is the last person who has caused me some grief in my research..  Can someone please help me find the death of:  John William Lane

John William Lane  b  in 1856 at Hinton to Sarah and Thomas Lane

Married Edith Martha Piper at Woolllahra 1879

His last child Arthur (one of Many) born in 1898 - Naval Store Cottage Circular Quay.

On John's  eldest sons marriage Certificate in 1923 - it states "father deceased".  So from that information I can narrow down his death from
1898 to 1923.

I have searched Trove, Sands Directory etc.  Found the Funeral/death notice of his wife Edith in the 1930's but to this point cannot find Johns death.

John's parents Sarah and Thomas died in 1915 and 1927 respectively in Qld.  However on one of their death Notices it does mention John in their list of children saying he was from Sydney.  I have searched NSWBDM between the above dates to no avail - there was a John Lane who died in 1902 St Peters but not sure.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time

Australia / LANE - WA
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 03:29 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help a very confused searcher... I am trying to link a Thomas and Sarah Lane - Married in NSW in 1855 to the same Thomas Lane and Sarah Lane in  the WA Electoral Rolls of 1903 & 1910 - Perth Area.

There are 2 death notices in the Trove for the death of Sarah in April 1915. She was living with her daughter  at the time of her death. One in the Western Australian dated 10th April 1915 and one in Brisbane Courier male date 3rd April 1915..  The one in The Western Australian paper states in part ..beloved wife of Thomas Lane (late of Cecil Street Highgate Hill Perth)  The reason I have continued is that with the QLD BDM for Sarah's death it states that father was John Thomas,  My Sarah's maiden name was Thomas.  This is going to blow my research out of the water.  Their son John William Lane was said to be an only child - also born NSW in 1856.  It would appear there are more children.  Cant find a death for a Thomas Lane in WA - but did find one in 1910 in QLD BDM - but mother's maiden name doesnt match - but who knows - can someone please help me

New Zealand Completed Requests / Caribou to Port Chalmers
« on: Friday 25 May 12 02:55 BST (UK)  »
Good morning,

I wonder if someone could help me find a ship passenger list for the Caribou which arrived Port Chalmers in Feb 1865.  I believe my g.g. aunt Jane Grieve Liddell was on board with her "nanny".  They were from Scotland.  I am hoping that her brother was on board.  Peter Liddell,  for some unknown reason called himself  Henry Liddell here in Australia.  I am hoping he is as I cant find his arrival in Australia directly from Scotland.  Hoping he may have emigrated from NZ to Australia

His DC states that he had been in the colony of NSW for 16yrs at the times of his death in March 1882.

Australia / Thomas LANE - Help to find arrival
« on: Monday 14 May 12 11:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,  Could someone please help me with an arrival.  I just cant find it. One of 2 families that have put me at my wits end.  This is the first one.....

I have a Thomas Lane who was born 1835 from Surrey UK,  His father was a retired Lieutenant in the Navy reserve in the UK.

Thomas Lane married Sarah Thomas in the Hinton area of NSW in 1855 and their first child was born in 1856.  Thomas has his occupation as a Carpenter.  I have information back in the UK but I have been frustrated by not being able to find his arrival to Australia..  His father did not come with him.  As Thomas was only 20 when married - it is only a small window for his arrival.  Is it possible that with his father having contacts with the navy that Thomas was a working crew member.  I hope someone can help me.  Adcord
