Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Barrett Radbourne
« on: Monday 16 May 22 11:16 BST (UK)  »
Trying to help my best friend with her family history and it's got me really frustrated.. Need some help please.

Her grandfather was called Albert G Barrett. He was born 1st January 1915 in Arlesford Hampshire
The son of BRYCE/Brice Bertie Barraett.and Kate ( maiden name Spencer)

Bryce is the start of the problem
Timeline going backwards...
1965.     Gravestone in Alrestord gives surname Barrett... 31st May 1965... With wife Kate

1939.  Elm cottage , Alresford..  Brice B Barrett..born 1886. Shown with wife Kate. And children
              Henry J 1908   Thomas F 1912 and Albert G 1915
* All children registered and birth as Barrett. Mothers maiden name Spencer
They also had a daughter called Ethel Barrett who was baptised 1906 in Cheriton.  fathers occupation bricklayer

1914....WW1 Brice Bertie Barrett.

This is where I lose the plot...
1911  census ...Bishops Sutton, Alresford
Brice Bertie RADBOURNE.... 24 occ. bricklayer born Newbury
His wife is kate... His daughter Ethel... Is not barrett. Neither is Henry James..and a new name Elizabeth Kate.

1906... Brice Bertie Radbourne married Kate Spencer in 1906

1891... I have found Brice born in Newbury.c.1887 living with his parents. Henry and Mary Radbourne. In Bradley.

My problem.
The only living relative , bless him has the start of alzeimers..but he remembers his dad's name is Albert George Barrett... He knows his grandfather's name was Bryce and grandma as kate. He knows the name Radbourne. But the details are very hazy to why the change.
I cannot find any concrete details

Anyone out there can help me with this mystery. It would mean so much.x

Staffordshire / Louisa Elks bastardy claim.
« on: Monday 27 May 19 11:06 BST (UK)  »
It would be fair to say this lady has drove me crazy for many a year.
If you search roots chat you will found numerous posts trying to nail her. It was with grateful thanks to the awesome researchers on the limerick section of the group. I have finally found her.

You see Louisa likes to lie and defraud people.
I have found a few court cases all around Uttoxeter, obtaining goods under false pretence s from shop keepers, which seems to be her "modus operandi "

HOWEVER.....
IN the Derbyshire advertiser on the 16th September 1853, in the Staffordshire petty sessions, whilst being prosecuted for obtaining goods under false pretence s from Michael Deaville, which she is sentenced to a prison, she yet again throws me a curve ball!!
IN the newspaper article straight underneath

"THE SAME LOUISA ELKS VS RICHARD WHITEHURST, of Rochester in order of bastardy, order made for 1s 3d a week on account of the girls imprudence".

How can I find more information on this,?
Did it actually happen or is it another lie?
What happened to the child?

Thanks in advance.x

Limerick / Despicable ancestor and a 25 year old mystery help.
« on: Friday 24 May 19 21:46 BST (UK)  »
For 20 odd years now I've been trying to nail my crooked 3x great grandmother. The story is fantastic but far too lengthy to explain. She's had that many aliases I bet she didn't know what her own name was in the end. I believe her true name to be ANASTASIA HUGGARD. according to cork police of the time she had been arrested for perjury and fraud on numerous occasions.

What I think I know....  she was born c.1832/33  in limerick.
I have 2 dates for a marriage, I know not why.
8 January 1851 to Timothy Brassill. Father given as Thomas John Haggard.
Or... 21st August 1853 in Newry , Dromore Ireland to Timothy Brazil.

Apparently they had a son.. Henry Brazil baptised in Dromore.19th may 1853
According to all the newspaper reports her father died when she was 5 or 6 in oilgate, wexford of cholera, he was a mason of some kind, and her mother remarried a man called Thomas Walsh.

The only one who isn't lying to me is Timothy, I believe him to be the son of Thomas Brazil and Jane young , baptised 24th February 1822 Newport Tipperary.

My questions,
Can anyone find me Anastasia? Or  Her parents.?
Before anyone asks me for a paper trail. For the last 25 years she was called Louisa Jane Shaw, born in 1833 from Alton Staffordshire..  however after the newspaper trail I find out she was the biggest con women in the 1850's called Alice Grey/ alias Anastasia Carter, alias Anastasia Haggard.  Yes I know it's a story to die for but its getting sticky.

Can anyone also tell me what happened to Timothy?. . Wolverhampton press stated he was in the army?
What happened to little Henry?

I have the court cases in the hundreds for Staffordshire, but need to find out about her early life in Ireland. Apparently she used the name Armstrong in Dublin 1849

I know you all love a really juicy problem, so I thought I'd try.

Armed Forces / Fred Rodgers service record ww1
« on: Wednesday 19 December 18 15:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me find out about my great grandfathers ww1 service.
He was born Fred Rodgers on the 1st of July 1886. In Eastwood, Rotherham South Yorkshire.
I know he served in the war , I have seen a photo of him in his uniform. Wearing some form of grenade cap badge and stripes on his arm.  I could be wrong but the word  "sapper" has been mentioned.

For nigh on 20 years I've had no luck.
Can anyone help me Please?

I once wrote to the guards museum , and although they were not supposed to tell me anything , the major accidently wrote in fountain pen at the bottom " 20561!"... so if this is the service no. It would make him a Sergt in  the RGA  he did stay after the war in the clean up campaign. But this is all I know demobbed January 1919.

Derbyshire / Mary Lowe the mystery, help required
« on: Monday 19 March 18 11:45 GMT (UK)  »
My husband has a mystery in his family and I cannot find the answer, it's driving me to destruction.

He's grown up with this story, but I can't find the evidence.

His father during wartime received a knock on the door, it was the police, he was asked to accompany them down to the local lido, at wingerworth, Derbyshire, to retrieve the body of one of his female relatives who had drown.

My late mother in law told me that her name was Mary Lowe, and that she had become embroiled in a wartime romance, and finding the man to be married, had committed suicide.

Fred ( my husband's father) had been well respected with the police, had accompanied them sometimes as an unofficial bailiff, and it's to believed there may gave been some form of cover up, because the family was well known in the local village of New Tupton.

Mary was born in 1894 the daughter of George and Sarah Ann lowe.

Can anyone help Me please

Can anyone help
I'm filling in the gaps ... at the moment I'm working on a little mistery . my husband's side
A long story short

One of my husband's aunties is  pulled out of "Smithy Pond" wingerworth. Having drowned herself.
The poor girl has fallen in love with an American airmen, and found out he's married.
Her name was never mentioned again.

Who was this poor unfortunate lady?

I know she was the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Betton, she was born before 1924 in Tupton.
I have been given a few names of what her name could be but nothing concrete...
It could be Mary Ann, or flora, or Jessie????
Can't find anything on ancestry to help
