The Common Room / What is a Warrick seller?
« on: Thursday 16 March 23 12:46 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have any idea what a warrick seller might have been?

The term is mentioned in a will dated 1764 in Gorran Parish Cornwall.

I wonder if it has some connection with boats....

Many thanks

Cornwall / St Mary's Truro churchyard look up request
« on: Tuesday 14 March 23 19:13 GMT (UK)  »
I think the Ann Rowe I am looking for was buried in St Mary's Truro on 28 December 1796.

The entry in the parish register gives no other information so I am wondering whether there might be a memorial inscription that would give some clues.  (I know it's a long shot!)

So please... if you have access to these... I'd really be grateful if you would look this up for me.

(She was born Ann HAMBLY between 1717 and 1734, probably in Blisland, to Robert and Grace.  I can't find her baptism.  She married George ROWE in 1749 and he was buried in St Clement in 1764.  I have info on their children etc.)

Many thanks

The Common Room / Certificate with surname "HORST"
« on: Tuesday 07 March 23 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a certificate dated 1953 relating to someone with the surname HORST - to do with an event in Cornwall.

Please send me a PM if this is someone in your family.

Meanwhile I am trying to work out how it came to be in my possession!

Cornwall / George RAW/ROWE baptism
« on: Friday 17 February 23 10:57 GMT (UK)  »
George RAW m Ann HAMBLY in 1749 in Blisland.

I have information on George and Ann's descendents and also Ann's family background.

But I have been unable to find George's baptism record and thereby any siblings etc.  So I would really appreciate any help in finding that.

The RAW family name has various spellings!  RAWE ROW ROWE

Many thanks

The Common Room / "Poor relief" 18th century
« on: Thursday 16 February 23 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please advise me...

When the parish made payments to the poor, was it always to the head of the household?

And in cases where the payments were made to women, would that have only been when they were widows or single or for whatever reason their husbands were not living with them?

Or if husband and wife were not living together in the parish, and both were deemed in need of poor relief, would the church have paid both parties separately or would there be an expectation that they would move back together?

Many thanks

I am unclear about the outcome of the case Robert HAMBLY's son William brought against his step mother, Grace and his step siblings and hope someone will be kind enough to have a look at the links below and please just let me know the outcome!  (A transcription of this document is not necessary!!)

William was Robert's oldest son, by his first wife.

Robert's second wife Grace and the children of their marriage were all beneficaries of the will - as were William's full siblings.

William was appointed Executor and it is not clear to me what he would inherit though it was his duty of course to deal with debts and ensure the beneficiaries received their dues.

Robert HAMBLY lived and was buried in Blisland.  His will was written when he was ill and in Bradstone, Devon where his daughter Mary lived.  He subsequently died from this sickness.

The court hearing the case was in St Nyot (Neot).

I think Grace and her children absented themselves from the proceedings.

Two witnesses gave testimony.

I appreciate that this is a lot to ask...but...

here are the links to the one and a half pages of text.

Cornwall / Looking for 2 x HAMBLY baptisms 1704 - 1742
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 00:38 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate any help in finding the baptisms of two of Robert HAMBLY's daughters - Honnor (by his first wife) and Anne (by his second wife).

Robert HAMBLY first married Honour PARSONS in Helland in 1704.

Their children were:
Honnor
William bapt 1708 Blisland
Mary bapt 1712 Blisland
Fanny (Frances) bapt 1714/5 Blisland

Honour HAMBLY "wife of Robert" was buried in Blisland 1715.

Robert then married Grace SLOGGET in 1717 in Blisland.  I think she may have been bapt in 1699 in Bodmin, father Xtopher SLOGGET.

Their children were:
Ann
Robert bapt 1717 Blisland
Jane bapt 1720 Blisland
Christofer bapt 1723 Blisland
Joseph bapt 1727 Blisland
Parmenos bapt 1730 Blisland
Thomasin bapt 1732 Blisland

Grace's will is dated 1762...  possibly the Mrs Grace HAMBLY buried in Menheniot in 1763??

The names of Robert HAMBLY's children were confirmed in both his and Grace's wills (both Blisland) and also in that of Ann's brother Christopher HAMBLY (St Kew).  Grace makes it clear that Ann is her daughter and not one of her step children.

I have wondered whether the Anne HAMBLY baptised in Lanivet in 1715 could possibly be Robert and Grace's daughter before they married.  No mother's name is given on the record.  Could this be yet another scandal in the family especially if I am right about the Grace SLOGGET baptism date in Bodmin?!  Of course she may not have been baptised soon after her birth...

As ever... any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cornwall / Elizabeth HENNA m William ROWE in 1775 Gorran Parish
« on: Wednesday 18 January 23 20:28 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me find Elizabeth HENNA's ancestors?

The only Elizabeth HENNA I can find that could fit is the daughter of Pearce HENNA and Mary, baptised in Falmouth on 29 Sept 1754.

According to parish records they had five children including an Elizabeth.

Although there are variations of Pearce such as Pears and Persy and Peris HENNA in Gorran, I cannot find the baptism of one that could be Elizabeth's father.

I've also seen HENNOW as a variation of HENNA!

I have looked at the wills of two Richard HENNAs, a William HENNA, Joan HENNA and a Pears HENNA (dated 1715) but cannot see where Elizabeth HENNA and parents Pearce and Mary HENNA fit into this family.  So maybe they don't.

It would be great to hear from someone who has researched the HENNAs of Gorran Parish!!

Many thanks

The Common Room / Certifying burials in wool
« on: Tuesday 06 December 22 20:41 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please explain whether the people certifying that a burial had been in wool were always relatives (except where strangers were being buried of course).

I am looking at the St Minver, Cornwall parish records (1700s).  Although some people are clearly relatives and so useful in identifying the correct burial, there are other people who seem to be certifying lots of entries!

I know this is a small-ish parish but...

I have been looking at a particular entry in the parish register where someone other than the mother of the child - who was still alive - has certified the record.  And I am wondering whether she must be related to the family somehow.

So I am wondering what the criteria were for certifying.

Many thanks
