The Common Room / A family story about a will
« on: Sunday 10 January 21 03:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi and happy new year :)

I would be interested in your thoughts :)

I knew my great grandmother, even though she was born in 1869, and I remember her well. She died when I was six. (That's her, with me and my mum in the photo.)

Great grandmother Alice and her three younger siblings were orphaned when she was 13. Their mother died first, in 1879, and then their father, in 1883. They lived in a village on Bredon Hill, on the Gloucestershire / Worcestershire border.

Alice used to tell a story about the time her father was out working, going from one place to another with his cart, when he came across a lady out riding. She was alone and had had an accident. She was lying injured on the ground, having fallen from her horse.

My great great grandfather helped her, of course. I cannot remember the exact details but I think that he lifted her onto his cart and took her home to safety. Understandably, the lady was extremely grateful. She asked for his details and told him: "I shan't forget you, David Neale". It seems to have been clear that she was rich and of high status, but I have no idea who she was.

When she died, she left David Neale a bequest in her will. Apparently, it was quite generous and included land and a mill in Wales. In order to claim it, Alice's father was asked to go to London. This would have been a major journey for him at any time, but, at this particular time, his wife was dying and he would not leave her.

Many years later, when my father asked her for more information, she said that it was pointless trying to follow it up, as the bequest would have already been lost and gone to the crown.

I appreciate that the bequest has probably long gone, either to the crown or to her family members, but I would still like to know more about it.

Has anyone got any ideas where I might start, please? I know that many families have such legends, but Alice seemed to be fairly certain of its truth when she told my family about it.

I'm just  seeking ideas, as I can't think where to look, or even what to look for.

I don't think it's possible to search for Will beneficiaries.
I don't know if it is correct to assume that any property would have reverted to the crown.
I don't know who might have owned so much, yet been out riding around Bredon Hill, in the mid 1800s.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any advice :)

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / H27c DNA in South Wales
« on: Sunday 16 June 19 03:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)
When my late brother's DNA was tested, the mtDNA result was H27c, thus, this is the DNA of myself, my mother, her mother, etc. etc. My mother is Welsh, as were all of the known females on this line. The earliest one I know of is Elizabeth Davies, who was born in or around Merthyr Tydfil c 1836 and died in Pontypridd district 1909. Her husband was Thomas Maldoon. Are there any other South Welsh members of H27c out there? We could be related :)

The Common Room / My Heritage
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 14:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

I am a long-term paid 'Ancestry' member and I have free 'Find My Past' membership but pay to get full membership from time to time.

I have just re-joined 'My Heritage' at a special price. I thought that it might be worthwhile as I have been told that they have lots of records not available elsewhere.

I see that they have the 1939 Register, but could anyone tell me, please, what else I should be looking for on 'My Heritage' that I wouldn't be able to find on 'Ancestry'? When I joined before I  just wasted my opportunities and I want to make the most of my membership,. :)

Thank you :)

Tipperary / Carrick-on-Suir Ancestry
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 14:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

My mum's great grandfather was born in Tipperary and we are heading off to Ireland next month in search of family history.

I am pretty sure that I have found my gt gt grandfather's baptism and his parents' marriage:

Edward / Edmund Keefe son of Patrick & Catherine (Lahy / Leahy?) was baptised at Carrick on Suir, Waterford & Lismore, Tipperary, on 3 Jan 1849.

Patrick Keefe married Catherine Leahy at Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford and Lismore, Tipperary, on 28 December 1846.

Does anyone with local knowledge know where the church is where these services would have taken place, please?

Or does anyone else have a family connection? :)

Thank you.
Tricia :)

Census and Resource Discussion / 1939 - Errors, etc?
« on: Tuesday 10 April 18 15:56 BST (UK)  »
I am not currently a full member of 'Find My Past' but I visited a record office the other day and was able to use their computer to access the 1939 Register. Now I am a bit confused.

I found my mother's details - even though the info states that 'Individuals’ records remain closed for 100 years from their date of birth or until proof of death is produced.' My mother is under 100 and she is alive & well.

I also found Mum's sister's details on there. It says 'widowed'. But she died in 1942, when she was only 16. She never married so was never widowed.

Is it common to find such things?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / J-M241 / J2b2 in England
« on: Monday 31 March 14 03:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi :)

A number of my relatives have been kind enough to have DNA tests carried out for me - with some interesting results.

I wanted to get Y-DNA or mtDNA results for as many of my grandparents and great grandparents as possible. In order to get info for my maternal Welsh grandfather, I went to his brother's son.

The results came back: J-M241 / J2b2

I have traced this male line back to William Hampton who, according to the census, was born around 1813 in Worcester (or possibly in Worcestershire). Worcester is a town in central England and Hampton is a very English name, but J-M241 / J2b2 is rare in England.

How did this line get here? I don't know. Some have suggested Roman soldiers or other random travellers.

Is there anyone else out there with English J-M241 / J2b2 ancestry? I'd love to make contact.

Gloucestershire / Ashton Under Hill School - 1900 (Photo)
« on: Monday 02 September 13 15:44 BST (UK)  »
I thought that this photograph might be of interest to some members.

It shows pupils and staff of Ashton Under Hill School (Group 2) in 1900. (It was in Gloucestershire, back then, but is now in Worcestershire.)

I understand that the teacher, seated on the right, is Miss Summers and the little girl right next to her is Bessie Miles.

Apparently, of the four standing girls, the tall one, second in from the left, is Jessie Jeynes.

Does anyone know the identity of any of the others?

Cork / The Mysterious Svombo Baptism, Cobh 1855
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 11:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi :)

Can anyone help me with a conundrum, please?  ???

One of my ancestral lines is the 'Svombo' family from Greece. Nicholas Svombo married an Irish girl, Ellen Barry, in Queenstown / Cobh, on 9th November, 1854. Their son, Lazaros, was baptised there on 29th July 1855. (Then the family moved to Cardiff.) The Roman Catholic St Colmans Cathedral was not then built, but it now holds records from the old RC church that preceded it.

A few years ago, I was searching for the surname 'Svombo' on the rootsireland / Mallow Heritage Centre site and found a reference to another baptismal record. I was intrigued and purchased the transcript. I received these details:

Baptism Record
    Name: Ellen Svombo
Date of Baptism / Birth: 26/07/1855
    Address: Parish / District: COBH
    Gender: Female
    County Co. Cork
    Denomination: Roman Catholic
    Father: John Svombo
    Occupation: --
    Mother: Mary Keeffe
    Sponsor 1 /Informant 1: Edward Fitzgerald
    Sponsor 2 /Informant 2: Hannah Kirwan
    Notes:
    PRIEST: H E DENNEHY

This was a surprise. 'Svombo' is an extremely rare name, but no-one on our family had heard of any of these people. I looked into it further.

St Colmans staff could not find any record of this baptism. They assure me that all they have for 'Svombo' is the marriage of Nicholas and Ellen and the baptism of Lazaros. Relatives who have visited the cathedral have not been able to find it, either.

The Mallow Heritage Centre assures me that the record is there, but would be hard to locate / decipher.

I have contacted both parties, a few times, to try to sort this out and I have now sent another e-mail. What more can I do? Any family historian would understand my frustration. If that Svombo family exists, then I want to know more. If it doesn't, then I want to confirm that. (The waste of money is the least important aspect of it.) I can't just nip over there to look, unfortunately, and, even if I did, where would I check? Others who have done so cannot find anything.

Any advice would be much appreciated, please. :)

Thank you! :)
