Armed Forces / Military initials in a Census
« on: Tuesday 26 September 23 21:18 BST (UK)  »

I have found a reference in a census which I don't understand.

In the 1901 Census at Hawarden Flintshire he lists his occupation as "Sergeant Major".
In the 1911 Census he lists his occupation as "army pensioner, Lieutenant and  GTMaster B1 R W FNS"

Does anyone know the meaning of "GTMaster B1 R W FNS"?

I have no idea what regiment this applies to.

TIA

Jim

Good day Everyone,

Can anyone decipher the name of the steam ship from a baptism in Manora, Karachee, India
from 1874 (Image is taken from FindMyPast)

Looks like SS "Amberutele" but goggle doesn't return any searches for anything similar.

Thanks

Jim

I just hope that more people get bored during the enforced lockdown, and decide to Test!!

Producing a saliva sample during a pandemic of the deadly Coronavirus is a very dangerous
thing to contemplate. I hope the genealogical companies cancel all DNA testing to help curb the spread and protect  their employee's until such time that it is safe to resume. IMO 9-12 months.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Not Understood writing
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 16:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone decipher the second name from the attached image. I can read Stephen Buckley
but the name underneath makes no sense at all. They are witnesses to a marriage in 1868

Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / GRO Indexes show No Mothers Name
« on: Sunday 14 May 17 11:54 BST (UK)  »
After seeing many birth records returned on the GRO index with no mothers name and
also sometimes no childs forename it begs the question,
What information can be gleaned from purchasing such certificates if no mothers
name/childs name is listed?

I have been contemplating asking this question for quite a while and reading this
thread by Ladyhawk (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=771409.msg6243371#msg6243371)
has in some way answered the question.

The certificate would list a mother but no father i.e an illegitimate birth.

Thank you Ladyhawk for your detailed response.

Technical Help / 10 Things You'll Miss Upgrading to Win 10
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 22:14 BST (UK)  »

Has anyone who  has upgraded to Win 10 noticed this?

Worst Windows 10 sacrifices:
Windows 7 features and Windows 8 features you will miss the most when upgrading to Windows 10

see this link:

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/feature/windows/worst-windows-10-sacrifices-missing-features-3614524/

I'll still wait about 9 months for all the bugs to be ironed out - hopefully.

The Common Room / Can anyone beat this marriage?
« on: Friday 19 December 14 12:34 GMT (UK)  »
On searching for details on the LDS site I came across this today:

Name: William Thomas Cook
Birth Date: 1772
Age:    120
Spouse's Name: Rosehannah Cartwright
Spouse's Birth Date: 1874
Spouse's Age: 18
Event Date:    29 May 1892
Event Place:    Lye, Worcester, England

It seems he was a game 'old' gentleman. I wonder if he survived the honemoon?
I think his age should be 20 not 120.
