Technical Help / Deleting and Reloading Ancestry Tree - Potential Issues
« on: Tuesday 12 March 24 13:35 GMT (UK)  »
I want to update my Ancestry tree which has got hopelessly out of date with my own tree, which is not GEDCOM compatible (don't ask what format it's in).

Updating it on Ancestry is not very user-friendly, so I have downloaded it as a GEDCOM file and uploaded the file to a free software package which is easy and fast to update, and when complete I intend to delete my current Ancestry tree and upload the new GEDCOM file. I'll also be deleting my trees on FindMyPast and MyHeritage and doing the same there, although I'm not bothered about issues on those sites.

Before I do that I want to be sure of the implications for my Ancestry account (if any). Has anyone done this and were there any major issues to be aware of wrt to (e.g.) DNA matches, etc? I assume that tree and DNA matches will automatically be updated by Ancestry - Is that correct?

FWIW I don't store any documents or photos with the Ancestry tree; it's literally BMD dates per person.

The Common Room / 1848 Madras India Illegitimate Baptism
« on: Monday 26 February 24 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
I have an 1848 Madras, India baptism record for Ellen Amelia Etridge. She was described as the illegitimate daughter of Charles William Etridge, but no mother's name was given. However, the leftmost column (Said to be Born) contains the information "Born on the 15 April 1848 which I certify Charlotte Capell". Charlotte Capell also appears as a sponsor in the rightmost column. Both other baptism entries on the page are certified by the father (as appears to be the case for those on other pages).

Would Charlotte Capell definitely be the mother or could she be a midwife or some other random person who was present at the birth and was therefore qualified to certify it?

I have only attached scans of the left and right columns, but the original is available on FindMyPast.

The Common Room / Order of Children in 1695 Will
« on: Thursday 21 December 23 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
Is/was there any convention regarding the order of children in wills?

I have a 1695 will of Ann Greenhill from Chrishall, Essex, the widow of Francis Greenhill, where her four living children are named (Seth, William, Matthew and Elizabeth), and I wondered if that may signify their order of birth, and if so, if males were listed first in order of birth and then females in their own order of birth?

Seth did receive the largest bequest, which makes me think he was probably the eldest (male).

Any ideas?

I have not found the baptism records of any of the children, or the marriage record of Francis and Ann.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Death Certificate Handwriting Help Please
« on: Monday 28 August 23 12:50 BST (UK)  »
I need help with the writing on two death certificates please:

The first is the middle word in the cause of death field. It's "Bronchitis ........... Certified". And in the informant field the name of the informant looks like "Milly B..ton".

The second is a badly aligned two row. I can read "wife of" and "the mark of" in the left and right fields, but can't read the top line of the cause of death. It looks like "D......y from".

Any ideas?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Welsh Addresses 1860-1880
« on: Thursday 10 August 23 13:01 BST (UK)  »
I have two Welsh adresses from New Quay, Cardiganshire birth certificates and cenus returns; I assume they are house names.

To me one looks like Glanrhyd and the other Glaunaut, but the N's and U's in both could be either U or N.

What do you think?

The Common Room / Missing Birth Registration 1840
« on: Monday 24 July 23 10:21 BST (UK)  »
My gt-gt-grandfather James Greenhill was one of seven children born after 1837 and all of the other births were registered in the Billericay, Essex district. The first two (twins) were born in 1838 and the one after James in 1842. One in 1846 was registered as Male Greenhill (he was later baptised Alfred).

James was baptised in April 1840, but I can't find him in the GRO records (as James or Male Greenhill). I'd be very surprised if he wan't registered though as all the others were. Is it possible that some pages were damaged or destroyed or wrongly transcribed?

The Common Room / GRO Marriage Search Options
« on: Friday 21 July 23 11:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for the marriage of Jenkin Davies & Margaret Davies in the Aberayron district (yes I know, two Davies's in Wales...). I can't find any parish records for the period, but there are two possibles in the GRO index for 1855 and 1857, although the first has four possible brides for Jenkin and the latter has two.

I could ask the GRO to do a "one year either side" of 1856 search at £14, but what would they do if both are Jenkin & Margaret? Or will they stop the search once they find one and send me that? The other option is to take a guess (I'd probably go for 1857) and if it's wrong take the £11 hit (or is it a £3.50 admin fee if either of the names don't match?).

Any advice on the best way to do this to maximise chances of success? FWIW it tool me five attempts (three at the old full price and two yesterday using the new £2.50 option) to get the correct birth certificate for Jenkin & Margaret's daughter Elizabeth...

I have uploaded my Ancestry DNA test and GEDcom tree to MyHeritage and paid the £35 fee to access the DNA tools; I don't have a MyHeritage subscription.

I deleted the empty tree and set my uploaded Ancestry tree to default and it now displays as My Family Tree, but when I go to the DNA tab Ancestral Surnames says: "Shared ancestral surnames cannot be found because you are not associated with a family tree on MyHeritage" and Pedigree Charts says "Create your family tree. Exploring your DNA is just the beginning. Start building your family tree, like xxxxxxxx did, and we'll automatically try to find out how you're related to your DNA matches".

Why doesn't it see my new default tree?

I've just uploaded my Ancestry DNA profile to MyHeritage and paid for the DNA features. The ethnicity estimates on MyHeritage are all over the place though.

Ancestry: England & NW Europe* 86%, Scotland 7%, Ireland 3% (*Sweden & Denmark 4%)
MyHeritage: England 3%, Ireland, Scotland, Wales: 48%, N&W European (France and the low countries): 47%

Now I have never found a single Welsh or Scottish ancestor (Yorkshire is as far north as it gets) and just a couple of Irish (one family in the early 1800s) and my N&W European ancestry is limited to some Huguenots, so the MyHeritage ethnicity estimate is completely wrong, whereas the Ancestry one is pretty much bang on (mostly east and central southern England).

Is this usual? Is Ancestry more loaded with UK members which leads to a more accurate ethnicty estimate?
