Canada / Uriah Doughty and his voyage to Canada with his wife Alice & Joseph Preston
« on: Sunday 05 January 20 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
Uriah, the tenth child, of Richard & Elizabeth Doughty nee Holt,  born January 4 1820, in Broughton by Brigg in Lincolnshire, England & married Alice Preston on 16th October 1843,  and  had a daughter Alice born 1 August 1847 & then a son, John born 14 January,  1849, then came to Canada with her father Joseph Preston, a widower after 1851, but before 6 December 1855, when their son Richard was born at Walpole, Haldimand, Ontario, Canada. They spent a short time in the Toronto area then moved to the Jarvis district. Uriah and his wife and family rented a house of the fifth block of the 5th Concession of Walpole owned by a MacDonald across the road from the farm owned now by Gordon Mitchell. The building is gone and for years the land uncultivated but a deep hole which was a root cellar could be seen for some time.
I haven’t been able to discover the date Uriah & his wife & her father Joseph Preston came to Canada. He may have sailed from Kingston-upon Hull.

Devon / Edith Emma Moore, born Rackenford, March 1865, daughter of Sarah Moore
« on: Monday 13 February 17 18:22 GMT (UK)  »

She is listed on the 1871 Census in the home of Elizabeth Moore a widowed farmer, living at Lane Land, Rackenford, as being her grand-daughter. Also at the farm is Elizabeth Moore’s daughter Sarah, 16 years of age and unmarried.
I am researching the above named person, who in 1881 is listed as being the niece of a James Kirk, born in Ireland, living in Boston, Lincolnshire, aged 16. This article in a local newspaper describes her marriage to a Robert HIND of Morton, Lincolnshire.
Grantham Journal - Saturday 21 March 1891
MARRIAGES:
HIND-MOORE: At the Wesleyan Centenary Chapel, Boston, on the 17th inst., (By the Rev. W. Watkinshaw), Mr. Robert HIND, of Dyke, Bourn, and Boston, to Edith Emma MOORE, adopted daughter of Mr. J. G. Kirk, Elm House, Boston.
I see from Rootschat that baptisms at Rackenford church ended in 1859, but there were other chapels there as well. Any idea how I could find her baptism?

Leicestershire / Marriage Records Blackfordby St Margaret from 1833 to 1837
« on: Monday 30 January 17 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Just trying to find the marriage of Samuel LOCKER to Harriet ORME, around 1834. The Orme family, including Harriet, were all born and christened in Blackfordby, and their first son Thomas Bevan LOCKER was born there in 1835, christened there on 26 April, 1835,  before the family moved on to Breedon on the Hill 8 miles away. I have found some marriages transcribed on rootsweb to 1833, but nothing beyond then. Anyone help at all?

London and Middlesex / Church of England Homes for Impoverished Children
« on: Thursday 13 October 16 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Anyone heard about the above "Church of England Homes for Impoverished Children"? I am told that in 1824, an Eliza HYDE born 16 May 1816 entered such a home in London and despite its horrors survived to became a matriarch in Lincolnshire. Now I know  her father, Samuel HYDE, died in April 1824, on 11 April was buried in the churchyard at St John Marylebone. Eliza had a brother Francis who survived also, and was  living with his great grandmother in Lincolnshire in 1841. Their mother, Elizabeth was still alive in 1824, and survived until well after 1870, so why would 2 young children, one aged 8 and the other aged 3, be placed in a such a home? Any ideas?

Northumberland / John Bryson born 1806, Holy Island-marriage to Mary.
« on: Tuesday 20 October 15 18:51 BST (UK)  »
John Bryson, born 24 June 1806 at Holy Island and his wife Mary, maiden name unknown, had a son called John Trotter Bryson.  He was born in 1834-there is a record of his baptism at Newcastle St John, 5 May 1834, John Trotter son of John Bryson & Mary (deceased), of St Peter’s Quay, father’s occupation, blacksmith. On Family Search there is record of the burial of a Mary Bryson at Newcastle St John on 5 May 1834 aged 29, so born 1805.
I would like to be able to find their marriage, so her maiden name. I haven’t actually seen this baptism, just been told it exists. Has anyone any of these baptisms at Newcastle St John that can confirm the above.
I know that John went on to marry Hannah Stephenson, nee Forster, widow of John Stephenson who was killed in his brother’s foundry in Newcastle in 1831.

John (trotter) Bryson, in 1861 is with the Forster family in Gateshead, shown as  nephew, no doubt related to his step-mother Hannah Bryson, nee Forster.

Can anyone help with this first marriage of John Bryson please?

Essex / Horace Harcourt Dixon
« on: Saturday 29 August 15 19:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi, May I refer you to this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=656106.0

I have found the above records in newspapers referring to the sudden death of a Lieutenant Commander Horace Harcourt Dixon at Leigh On Sea in August 1931.
Chelmsford Chronicle - Friday 28 August 1931
Southend Police, called on Saturday to a houseboat on Leigh Marshes found Mr. Horace Harcourt Dixon, a retired naval officer dead on the floor. He had been under a doctor for a considerable time for heart trouble.
Northampton Mercury - Friday 28 August 1931
Lieut.-Commander Horace Harcourt Dixon, R. N. retired, aged 55, who lived alone in a houseboat on the marshes at Leigh-on-Sea, was found dead on the floor of his cabin by the police on Saturday.

I was wondering if there was an inquest into his death mindful of his cause of death? Thinking that a local library might help or local newspaper-can anyone suggest anything further?

According to this article http://www.methodistheritage.org.uk/missionary-history-graham-wesley-deaconess-ceylon-2004.pdf
Reverend Edgar Thomas Selby born 1881 in Buxton, Derbyshire married Faith Hunter, a deaconess in the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society about 1910 in Batticaloa, Ceylon. Any suggestions where I could find the date of this marriage? It’s believed that Faith died in Ceylon before 1932, when the Reverend Selby returned to Britain, any suggestions of where I could find her date of death and burial?
