Ireland / Irish survivors medal
« on: Monday 15 June 09 05:22 BST (UK)  »
I know that my grandfather was active in the Irish War of independence but am unsure if he ever collected a survivors medal. Is there a listing of this award in any government archive that I could search.

Many thanks

Dublin / Photo request Aungier st
« on: Tuesday 12 May 09 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm not really sure if this is allowed or in the right area if it is, but i recently found out from the 1911 census that some of my great grandparents lived at 38 Aungier st. I haven't been there before so I don't know if the building from the time is still standing, but I was wondering if it is, would someone be good enough to take a photo of it for me. It would be greatly appreciated as I'm not going to be able to get to Dublin for a long long time.

Thanks again for any help with this
cheers

World War One / WW1 service papers help
« on: Friday 24 April 09 18:50 BST (UK)  »
hi all, i was wondering if anybody would be able to decipher the middle text of this passage from my great grandfathers ww1 papers, he was a twenty year man and then signed back up for another year at the end of the war.

i can't quite make out from 'entitled to travel...' and 'appointed...'
also i'm not sure what this means as well so if anyone could make any sense of what it's saying as well as what the words are  ;) that would be much appreciated...

EDIT: hmm, it doesn't seem to want to let me post the picture it keeps saying that i've already posted a picture of the same name  ???
i'll keep trying...

« on: Tuesday 24 March 09 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have several relatives that died in Torphichen between 1900 and 1954 - where would they have been buried locally ? Any ideas as I am visiting there in the next few weeks and would love to track the headstones down as I have all their family history in place now.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / muster notes help
« on: Friday 20 March 09 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've been looking through the muster records of my gg grandfather Joseph Lawson, who was with the 69th foot from 1855 to 1876. This picture is taken from the muster roll for January - March 1861 when he was stationed at the Regimental Depot at Fermoy. He had just got back from Burmah so presumably he landed at Hythe.

After that very long winded introduction can anyone read what the first half of the notes say, I read the end as 'from Hythe 18th March' and I'm hoping that the beginning will be something interesting.

Cheers

Dermot

also does anyone know what 'Tonghoo, Burmah' would be called now?
