Derbyshire / Maternity Home in Derby
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 03:31 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone know anything about a Maternity Home in Derby or how you would go about finding records from it?

I have a birth certificate for a Florence Eva Houghton born 28th November 1906 at 'The Maternity Home U D' (don't know what the 'U D' is).  The registration districe is Derby in the sub-district of Derby etc..

The mother is my elusive Constance Florence Houghton formerly Letchford (and the father is J W A Houghton of 13 Dean Street Derby), but it's really any details on 'Constance' that I'm after and I was wondering whether maternity homes kept anything that might be useful that is now available.

World War One / WW1 Army photo query - revised (new photo)
« on: Monday 25 October 10 12:57 BST (UK)  »
The attached photo is of 1 of 3 members of my family killed in WW1.

It is either William Joseph Turland who was in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) who died in Flanders in 1815...

Or his brother John Turland who was a Private in the Worcestershire Regiment who died in Flanders in 1918...

Or their nephew William Laurence Hickey who was a Private in the Royal Fusileers, City of London Regiment (formerly 94th TR Battalion) who died in 1918 also in Flanders.

This photo was taken from a larger group photo (which I'll scan when I find it)...   Is anyone able to confirm whether it is of any of the above?

Thanks

***2.11.10 - I've now attached the group photo from which the small portrait was taken***

Can anything more about the regiment be gleaned from this please?

Derbyshire / Letchford, Derby
« on: Monday 25 October 10 03:17 BST (UK)  »
This is one of my main brickwall's on my father-in-law's side...  it's a bit convoluted so please bear with me!

I have a 'Constance Florence Letchford' who married James William Arthur Houghton in Lambeth on 29 January 1901; on the marriage cert she gives her father as 'John Letchford' Blacksmith...  incidentally, none of the witnesses were 'Letchford's'.

I also have the birth cert's for a couple of James and Constance's children which also give the name of their mother as 'Constance F Houghton formerly Letchford'

At the 1901 census Constance and John were living at Paris Street, Lambeth.  Constance's dob is estimated at 1874 and her birthplace given as Derbyshire.  At the same address (in a different household) lived 2 sisters Mabel and Ruth Letchford born circa 1881 and 1883 in Bradwell Bucks.

Through searching earlier censuses I have found that Ruth and Mabel's parents are Henry and Mary Elizabeth Letchford (nee Cooper).  Henry was born circa 1851 in Rochester, Kent and Mary Elizabeth was born circa 1849 in Derbyshire.

I have also found some baptisms for children of Henry and Mary Elizabeth Letchford in Derbyshire - Harry 1873, Rose 1875 and Mary Elizabeth 1871.

My problem is that I can't find a birth /baptism for a Constance Letchford (or any derivative) and I can't find her on any census prior to the 1901 census (I do have her and James at 1911 in Derby)...

Here's where my puzzlement with  Mary Elizabeth Letchford Jr born circa 1871 comes into the frame...   I can find her at 1891 living as a servant in Willesden - just around the corner from 'parents' Henry and Mary Snr but I can't find Mary Jr at 1881 or at 1901 or 1911.

What I'm wondering is if my Constance Florence and Mary Elizabeth could be one in the same person!  I can't find a death for a Constance Houghton that fits...  Also, my father-in-law never knew of his grandmother being referred to as Constance but as Mary!

I have seen a few of the marriage registrations for some of the Letchford siblings and they seem to use each other as witnesses - not Constance though.  Also, I can't find a John Letchford - Blacksmith at all so am I right to assume that Constance fabricated her details for some reason?

Can anybody throw any light on any of this please?

Thanks... phew!

Somerset / Jane PERRY or WHEELER b.1833 Bath
« on: Monday 25 October 10 02:29 BST (UK)  »
Oh where to begin!..

I have a Jane Wheeler, the mother of Albert Wheeler b.1869 Pimlico and Ada Wheeler b.c.1874 Pimlico (and possibly the mother of a Jane and Louise).

I can find her at the 1871 census as Jane Wheeler born in Bath and at 1881, 1891 and 1901 as Jane Newman, also born in Bath (at 81 and 91 as the 'wife' of Charles Newman).

On her son Albert's birth cert she gives her maiden name as 'Perry' and his father as George Wheeler, Potman (deceased).  On Ada's marriage cert, the father is given as Alfred Wheeler, Furniture Porter (deceased)...

The thing is I can't find any marriage for Jane - as a Perry to a Wheeler or to a Charles Newman and I can't confirm her on any census prior to 1871 in the Bath / Somerset area or in the London area.

By 1881 her son Albert was in an Industrial School and then ended up in the Army.  I have a copy of his Army Service Records and he gives his next of kin as his mother Jane Newman so I'm happy that I'm looking for the correct Jane - problem is I can't find any trace of her before 1871....

Help!  I'm looking for any baptism, marriage or census pre 1871 for a Jane Wheeler born circa 1833 in Bath.

Thanks in advance (especially if you've managed to read to the end of the above)

« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 06:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone will be able to tell me what it says on the following War Service Records..

In the 1st image, I'm struggling to make out what it says under 'Promotions, Reductions, Casualties' at the dates 9.7.16 and 9.4.1919.

In the 2nd image, I can't make out what it says under Military History Sheet and Name of Medal.

Thanks in Advance.

Rosie
