South Africa / Why can't I find records of voyages to South Africa?
« on: Thursday 01 September 11 22:21 BST (UK)  »
Dear All

I don't often post paternal grandparents Philip Charles DENVIR b27.05.1886 Whitehaven Cumberland m Annie LOWERY b 1887 Whitehaven. They married at Norwich (!) on 11.07.1919 (4b 438) - a 'runaway marriage' as he was catholic and she was protestant. They travelled to South Africa on at least 1 possibly 2 occasions. I have lace tableclothes from Madeira en route and stories of being robbed on the quayside losing passports etc. To cut a long story short, Annie didn't like it there and they returned home. They were loaned some money by her brother to start a bakery when they got back to Whitehaven (all documented in letters, but a very elderly and lately deceased aunt's memory not quite as reliable). I cannot find ANY record of their voyages - either on passenger lists or incoming passenger records on ancestry. I think they might have travelled around the time of their marriage and have tried searching for them as married/ single/ as Ann/ Charles/ Charlie etc) luck! Can anyone please point me in the right direction?
Many thanks

Hoping someone can help trace Philip Denvir m Christina Agnes Doyle. Philip was b 23.01.1905 England and his parents were Richard and Violet nee McConnell. I believe he might have 2 sons and 1 daughter still living. Philip and at least 2 of his 5 brothers moved to the US and never returned to the UK. I would like to know when/ which ship/ port he entered the US (maybe via Canada???) and his death date. My father (also Philip) was his full cousin. Thank you - in return am visiting Downpartick in Ireland on Monday and will have time to do some lookups/ MI searches...thanks

Seeking death info for Patrick Fitzsimons b 1837 Ireland, m Elizabeth Denvir 1855 Whitehaven Cumberland (vol 10b page 688). Elizabeth  in 1861 census listed as 'married' but living with parents and brother - no husband listed - but by 1871 noted a 'widowed'....have looked for death details but - no joy - also no joy with death info for Elizabeth Fitzsimons - nee Denvir.

Cumberland / Bruce - George b. 1845
« on: Saturday 02 May 09 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Seeking info re George Bruce b 1845 Workington who m Mary Jane Lowery  23.02.1868 St Bees. Mary Jane Lowery b 1848 c 27.08.1848 d 26.08.1892 was killed by her husband George Bruce. George was sentenced at Carlisle Assizes - found to be in a state of 'melancholia' and sentenced to jail. I think I have found him in 1901 census -as 'inmate' Wandsworth and possibly in 1911 but can't find date/ place of death. Wondered if anyone could help please?
Also...census (1891) details Preston Bruce and Gilfred Bruce as sons of Mary Jane and George but later (ww1 records) Preston states Mary O'fee (nee Lowery d of Mary Jane and George) as his mother.......presume illegitimate sons of Mary O'Fee (nee Bruce)???? Can not find either Preston or Gilfred after this and would love to have some pointers......

Many thanks in advance
