Hi,

Looking for some help please dating these 2 family photos to try identify who might be in them.

I think the group photo may be about 1893 - if it is the family I think, the youngest daughter was born in 1886. Grateful for any input on whether this sounds about right?

The 2 individual photos, I'm not sure if these are the parents from the group photo but would appreciate any thoughts on dates for these as well.

They were all taken by Turnbull and Sons, Artistic Photographers, 10 Jamaica Street, corner of Argyll Street, Glasgow.

Thank you  :)
Lauren

Scotland / Declared insane
« on: Sunday 28 November 10 04:08 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if anyone can help with information on mental health in the 1900s in Scotland. I have a relative that was declared "insane" by the Perth Sheriff in the 1900s, and was locked up for the next 30 years. What was classified as "insanity" in those days? And would any record of such a declaration still exist? Is this something local newspapers might have reported or were these things kept hush-hush?

I've managed to access some of my relatives later case records from one of the asylums they were in, which made for very interesting reading, however there doesn't seem to be any proper diagnosis or attempt at rehabilitation. Was this usual in those days? The particular asylums my relative was in were the Murray Royal in Perth, Murthly Asylum in Perthshire, Hartwood Asylum near Shotts and Dykebar Asylum near Paisley. If anyone has further information, I would be very much interested.

Ayrshire / 1820 Irvine Census
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 01:01 BST (UK)  »
LDS records show the 1820 census is avaliable for Irvine in Ayrshire which includes name of family head, age, occupation, and religion, but I'm not sure where to go about finding it; can't find it on the NAS catalogue.

Has anyone consulted this before and know anything further about it?

Ayrshire / Irvine Relief Church Presbyterian Church
« on: Friday 13 March 09 09:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows anything further about this church.

I have one ancestor baptised here but I can't find any other members of their family there; I managed to get the following from LDS:

History—
In 1751, the Earl of Eglinton as patron presented the Rev. Charles Bannatyne of Kilmory, in Arran, to the church and parish of Irvine, then vacant. The presentee was inducted to his charge in direct opposition to the strongly expressed feelings of a large portion of his parishioners against him. Application was made to the Relief Presbytery for supply of sermon. A petition was presented to the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow, on the 18th of August 1773, and a place of worship was built.
Source: Annals and Statistics of the United Presbyterian Church, by Rev. William MacKelvie, D.D., pub. 1873. Film #477618. More details may be given in the source, including a list of ministers.

Records—
Family History Library Film Number
Baptisms 1778–1790, 1807–1877 0889478 item 3–4 X
Marriages 1777–1877 0889478 item 3–4 X
Session Minutes 1777–1877 0889478 item 3–4
Note: The X means the records have been extracted.

Am I correct in saying that the relief church was formed because many locals objected to the Rev Bannatyne, and not because of any real difference in religious opinion with the established church?
Was also wondering whether anyone knew why there is a gap in baptisms between 1790 and 1807 in their records, and how I might go about consulting the session minutes to fill in that gap.

So confused  ???

Stirlingshire / Stirling Archives
« on: Friday 13 March 09 04:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm planning on a trip to Stirling Archives to try flesh out my family tree a bit. I was wondering if anyone can offer me advice on what sort of things would be most useful to check? I've had a look at the archives website, but if anyone has been before or has advice it would be most appreciated!

I'd like to check the newspapers for obituaries, but does anyone know if there is some kind of indexing in place at the archives for newspapers or will I have to trawl through microfilm?

I would also like to look at kirk session records to try find details of pre-1855 births that don't appear in the IGI. Is this advisable or is the information generally a duplicate of what appears in the IGIs?

Finally, does anyone know if the archives hold any burial information, and if not where I could find it? Any other hints/tips for an archives visit?

Sorry for so many newbie questions... I think I'm at the point where I've exhausted the resources avaliable on the internet, so time to venture out and find more bits to consult. Any help would be very welcome :)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Help with dating 2 photos
« on: Friday 13 March 09 02:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there people :)

I was wondering if someone can help me out with these two photos. It is my belief that the the first photo shows the eldest male of 4 generations of my family. It is a smallish photo, about the size of a postcard, and is also printed on a thick card. The card was snapped in half, and its fairly obvious where I've tried to digitally merge it.

The second photo was done in 1910-1912 approximately, shortly before the eldest gentleman in the picture died. As you can see, I've had to scan it and piece it together as the original is large - perhaps about 30cm x 45cm. It has an iridescent sheen quality to the black parts of the photo, which made it a little difficult to scan.

My question is..... does the first photo look like the same people as the second photo, a generation before? And am I correct in thinking the first photo would be taken around 1890? The dates I've given are based purely upon who I believe to be in the photos and their dates of birth, so please correct me if it seems wildly inaccurate. I'm not sure at the minute if the first photo is an earlier photo of the same people or a photo of a different line of the family, so some dating on the first photo would be most helpful.

Many thanks for any help, it is much appreciated!
