can anybody tell me if any demolitions, or alterations occurred in that area in 1871-1891? I am trying to find my ancestor EMMA ANN PHILLIPS b 1821 who lived at 16 Grove Place , Tottenham, until at least 1871. I cannot find a listing for her in the 1881 census at present and a check on the address revealed that the 1881 census only has records up to number 4 Grove Place and as that census is supposedly complete therefore something happened to Grove Place itself?

many thanks

Family History Beginners Board / missing half brother/sister
« on: Tuesday 29 June 10 18:18 BST (UK)  »
from one of my maternal uncles...

The story goes, and I can't vouch
for it's accuracy because of course one didn't talk about such things, that
when our dad (richard henry williams born 1900) walked from South Wales to London to find work at the time of
the depression and/or general strike (I'm a bit vague about when this
happened but it would presumably be before he met our mum) he stopped in
Swindon and found time to father a child. I'm told that he paid maintenance
for many years and that does ring a bell. How do we track down this missing half sibling? No names and presumably s/he was illegitimate.

Any ideas folks?

Family History Beginners Board / possible wrong name on birth cert
« on: Friday 26 February 10 19:16 GMT (UK)  »
is there any reason why someone would register their child under a wrong surname ...

I would link this to previous posts but I don't know how so apologies in advance for not doing that...

OK, It's THomas Amott (again)...it is possible that his birth was registered under the name Thomas Ratcliffe. Now, I have found a marriage in lancashire between an francis amot and a hannah ratcliffe in 1845.  but according to his death and marriage certs and most census returns, thomas was born in 1848/49...so should have been registered under AMot...
OK so maybe the amot/ratcliffe marriage isn't the right one BUT it's the only one I've found using either Freebmd or Lancs OPC...
HELP!  This is driving me dottier than I already am....

FH Documents and Artefacts / mortgage of share in estate 1853
« on: Saturday 20 February 10 17:37 GMT (UK)  »
my ancestor MICHAEL PHILLIPS (1818-1899) of Tottenham, mortgaged his share in his late father EDWARD's estate for the sum of £150.  Sum to be repaid with interest in a year's time (it was).  The other parties to the mortgage were JOHN PHILLIPS the trustee of Edward's estate and RICHARD SMITH the YOUNGER Gentleman of Hoborn.

What I cannot find out is why Michael took out this mortgage. There appears to be no associated house purchase and he had been married for nine years by 1853. There is no mention of the reason for the mortgage in the document itself.  Is there any way of tracking down what the mortgage was for?  And also details of Richard Smith the Younger...

London and Middlesex / st georges hanover square - birth of James Wells
« on: Monday 15 February 10 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
hi all
my ancestor James Wells is recorded as  being baptised in the parish of st george hanover square in 1825.  His 8) parents were listed as living at "lancaster court"
it has been suggested that James was born in the local workhouse (this was at Fulham Road I believe). As i don't know the locality (being in Cambridgeshire) would Lancaster Court be in the area of the workhouse?I have looked at the workhouse.org website and am none the wiser...
would there be any records of inmates at that date?
