Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help reading 2 signatures
« on: Saturday 08 February 20 18:49 GMT (UK)  »
I'm after a bit of help reading a marriage transcript.  Its the one on the bottom left - between William Smirthwaite and Mary Veevers.  What I'd like to know are the names of the signatures of the two people who signed as being in the presence of the marriage.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-65D1-PY

I'm hoping they might be family of the Smirthwaites (or Veevers).

What I'm interested in is finding out what John Farquharson SHORTT was doing in India, and when did he move to India from Scotland.

Any thoughts as to where I might find this out?

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / What does this coat of arms look like?
« on: Wednesday 16 October 19 11:27 BST (UK)  »
In the Lincoln Visitations I have found a description of a coat of arms -- it matchs the description in family papers - but I don't know what it actually looks like.  My searches via the family name "Goodhand" don't produce a result that appears to go with the description.

The description is

Arms. — Quarterly, 1 and 4, Chequy Ardent and Gules on afess Azure three dexter hands
mailed of the first (Goodhand). 2 and 3, xWycnt a chevron Azure between
three lions rampant Gules (Harvye). On an escucheon of pretence, Barry
of six Ermine and Gules three crescents Sable an annulet Or for difference
(Waterton.)

Cbkst. — An armed arm embowed proper holding a sword Argent hilt and pomel Or.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

The Common Room / Charles William FURBER's 22 children.
« on: Wednesday 09 October 19 12:42 BST (UK)  »
Charles William Furber (16 March 1818 - 1890), married twice:-
Marriage (1)     about 1842 (Age 23) Charlotte Smith – died 1862
Marriage (2)    24 November 1863 (Age 28) Emily Darrell Louisa Turner

The wives had 11 children each - this was confirmed by the autobiography of one of Emily's sons.

I have found all but one child - a son (there were only 3 daughters).

Charlotte had:-
Charles FURBER (31 January 1844-1931) --- St Andrews Holborn
William FURBER (b. 21/10/1845) -- St Andrews Holborn
Robert FURBER (b. 7/2/1847) -- St Andrews Holborn
George FURBER (25/8/1848) -- St Andrews Holborn
Arthur FURBER  (b.1850) -- St Andrews Holborn
Richard FURBER (b. 13/6/1852) - Bushey, Herts
Alfred FURBER (b. 19/2/1854) -- London
Herbert FURBER (b. 22/1/1856) -- London
Charlotte Elisabeth Priscilla P FURBER  (b. 22/5/1858) -- London
Henry Aubrey FURBER (22/5/1860) -- London

Emily's Children -
Edward Price FURBER (1865-1940)  -- Marylebone
Percy Norman FURBER (b. 1866) (Wrote an autobiography “I Took Chances”)  -- St Johns Wood, London
Emily May V FURBER (b.  1867)  -- Marylebone
Frank FURBER  (b. 1869)  -- St Johns Wood, London
Stanley FURBER (b. 31/8/1870)  -- Marylebone
Montague FURBER  (23 Apr 1872 - 08 Feb 1940)  -- Marylebone
Robert Leslie FURBER (b. 1873)  -- Marylebone
Ida Olivia Annie FURBER (b. 1876)  -- Marylebone
Lionel Gipps Hopkins FURBER  (b.10/7/1879) - my great grandfather  -- Marylebone
Harold FURBER   (twin of Leonard) (b. 4 August 1880)  -- Marylebone
Leonard Duckworth FURBER (twin of Harold) (4 August 1880 - May 27, 1912)  -- Marylebone

If you've been counting - there are only 21 children there.

But in the 1901 Census listing for Henry Aubrey FURBER at Newington Green, Middlesex, England is Cabeb Furber a “brother” aged 48 so born in 1853. Date wise this would be between Robert and Alfred.  Cabeb was a Yard Labourer. (? maybe called Caleb?)  However I can't find any a birth/marriage/death or other census for him.  Can anyone else find him?

Lancashire / Dr Stephens in Burnley
« on: Wednesday 02 October 19 11:12 BST (UK)  »
A bit of a puzzler this one.

What I do know.........

Barbara Helen Stephens (Jan-March) 1906 - Burnley
Married to Leonard Parker (Dec 1928, Maryborone)
Divorce 1936
Married Eugene M P Marguet (Dec 1938) Burnley

Barbara's father was a GP - who was often paid in cotton shares by his patients (yes pre NHS).  Even at that time the cotton shares were near enough worthless.

There is supposedly a link to the name "SMURTHWAITE" - I'm guessing that might be Barbara's mother's maiden name?

Family legend that the Smurthwaite's are linked to Lord Nelson and Trafalgar.  (this could well be just wishful thinking on the family part).

Anything anyone can tell me about Barbara's parents (grandparents etc) greatly appreciated.  (I'm not after her marriages).

The Common Room / Thoughts on something thats puzzling me.
« on: Friday 20 September 19 12:10 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors (William Parker) married a Jane (or Jan) Goforth at Holy Trinity, Hull on 25/8/1757.

I cannot find a date of birth for her.  And I am assuming she died before 21 or 23/1/1772 as William remarries a Jane Usherwood.

(the existence of the 2 Janes is confirmed by a family tree written by my grandfather pre-1970).

What I'm puzzled about is Jane Goforth's death.

There is a Jane Goforth being buried 06/10/1766 in Hull.

There is also a Jane Parker dying at Freiston, Lincolnshire  on 02/11/1766.

Freiston and Hull are about 75 miles apart.

If my ancestor is the one that died in Freiston, might she have been born there?  I can't find any record of Jane Goforth's birth.  Or a Goforth family I can link her to.

Any thoughts welcome.

Armed Forces / What did my Great-Aunt do in WW2?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 11:49 BST (UK)  »
My Great-Aunt - Mary Marguerite Hodgson (I haven't got her exact dates but she was born between (1907-1911) and died about 1992).  She didn't marry until she was into her 70's.

My family has always believed that Aunt Mary did something "top secret" in WW2 that she could never talk about.

I have no idea how to find out about this - can anyone help?

Her parents were Vera Marguerite Bacon  &  Arthur Thomas Hodgson, who Married at Uttoxeter, Staffs (1906)

The Common Room / Parker & Cowham/Cawham
« on: Tuesday 27 August 19 22:12 BST (UK)  »
I've been fascinated by how my (4x) great grandfather, John Cowham Parker (JCP) came by his middle name.

As far as I can tell there are no Cowhams in the family.

But on a hunch I did a FamilySearch for any "Parker" (first name) and "Cowham" as surname.  And up came "William Parker Cowham"

JCP's father and grandfather were both called William.

“William Parker Cowham” Christened on 8/1/1796 at  Sculcoates, York.  His parents are Robert & Frances Cowham.  JCP's father - a William Parker was buried on 9/12/1820 at Sulcoates York.

Now things get more complicated - Robert Cowham seemed to use the surname Cawham previously. Dates and places seem to match.

In a previous topichttps://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=765186.0 - Roberts parents are identified as..........

John Cowham (1733) and Mary Parker (1728).

What link does Mary have (if any) to the Parker family?

Here is a brief summary of that part  of the tree

William Parker (snr) (1714-1802) –m- (22/1/1737) (1) Mary Simpkin/Simpkins    (2) Mary Mann

William Parker (Jnr) 1743-1820 (WP & Mary Simpkin’s son)
William Junior had three wives, Jane Goforth, Jane Usherwood and Betty Bramston (nee Brown).  Jane Usherwood gives birth to John Cowham Parker on 15 Dec 1773 in Hull

John Cowham Parker (15 Dec 1773 – 8/1/1841) – Married twice
1) Miss Ann Goodhand (1st wife) (1777-1808) (m.1795)

Any information or general thoughts greatly appreciated.
