Glamorganshire / Looking for burial place
« on: Thursday 25 May 23 20:15 BST (UK)  »
John Cooper 1855-1936 and his wife Mary Ann Cooper (nee Griffiths) 1868-1943 lived in Blaenllechau near Ferndale, Rhondda Fach. I'm trying to find where they were buried. I have a list of burials in Ferndale cemetery and they aren't on it. Possibly Penrhys, perhaps Maerdy, maybe even Llanwonno but I really don't know where. Anyone with a list who could check for them for me would be much appreciated. Thanks

This is a section of a death notification from 1919 which contains a word that looks like "Missionar". What do you think?

Please could someone translate this document into English for me? I believe it is a record of confirmation.
Thank you

Europe / Adreßbücher for Gelsenkirchen and Dortmund
« on: Saturday 14 March 20 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me if the Landesarchiv NRW has copies of the Adreßbücher for Gelsenkirchen and for Dortmund 1900-1905 inclusive? I am interested in members of the Faust family in both these cities  and can't find the books for any of these years on line.

Europe / LOOKUP REQUEST. Diocesan Archive of Trier
« on: Friday 16 August 19 15:24 BST (UK)  »
It's a long shot I know but if anyone happens to be kicking their heels in Trier in the vicinity of the Bistumarchiv Trier (Jesuitenstrasse 13c) Tuesday-Thursday 8.30-17.00 I'd be most grateful if they would take a look at the records held there for the church of St. Margarita, Oberheimbach near Bingen to try to find the baptism record of my great-great grandfather Heinrich Schneider.

I do not know his year of birth, nor his parents, but based on the baptism record in Sterkrade of his daughter in 1862 and the birth of a son in 1858 I guess that he was probably born between 1830 and 1840. He was a wool weaver by trade. I'd like to find out about his family in Oberheimbach.

The archive is free to use but they don't accept requests for searches by people like me who cannot attend in person.
Thanks very much

Trying to trace the roots of one of my great-great grandfathers Heinrich Schneider and his wife Margarethe Egemeier based on the following information from the christening of my great grandmother Henrietta Schneider in the Evangelisch Gemeinde Sterkrade:

Henriette Schneider, * 02.04.1862, ~ 13.04.1862, Tochter von Heinrich Schneider, katholisch, Wollweber aus Oberheimbach bei Bacharach, und Margarethe, geb. Egemeier, aus Wesel

I have tracked down a family book for the catholic parish of Oberheimbach to the Bavarian State Library in München but it is not available on line. Is there a central repository for catholic records in Germany?

While searching through death records for Gelsenkirchen online at Landesarchiv I stumbled across registrations for the deaths of the following soldiers taken prisoner during WW1 who died in Gelsenkirchen-Alt. The Landesarchive SU records are online but there is no register of names and if you don't know the date of registration it is necessary to scroll through (literally) thousands of records checking each one for the name of the person you are looking for, so it could be tricky to find these people if you didn't know exactly what you were looking for.

The soldiers are:
Thomas Murphy d 20.7.1918 25yrs old Durham Light Infantry, from Weatherley Hill, Co. Durham
William John Penfold d 13.7.1918 34yrs old London Regiment, from Bexley Heath
James Unsworth d 25.7.1918 25yrs old Kings Own Lancashire Regiment, from Little Hulton
Arthur Staley d 20.7.1918 25yrs old Kings Own Yorkshire Regiment, from Ringinglow, Sheffield
Henry Edgar Dawdry d 2.10.1918 26yrs old 2nd Regiment City of London from Bethnal Green Middlesex

You can get the records free online from the NRW Landesarchiv - Gelsenkirchen is in the OWL (OstWestfalenLippe) section, or you can PM me.

Europe / Germany location of death registration

Request for info/advice, not a request for a search.
In 1904-ish my great grandfather, born in Rotthausen (Gelsenkirchen NRW), living in Dortmund, died while on a trip to "somewhere in the USA". His family were at home in Dortmund at the time. Would his death be registered in Germany, even though he died abroad, and if so would it be in the place where he was born or his last place of residence. The birth and marriage records of some of my relatives have all sorts of useful dates annotated in the margin by the Standesamt eg date and place of death, birth of children etc, but not this one, sadly.
