Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Baptism - Sedgley All Saints
« on: Tuesday 18 March 14 15:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Does anyone know where I might obtain copies of the registers for 1800-1825? BMSGH don't seem to cover this period and I have been unable to find anywhere else on the net. I am looking for the baptism of Thomas Hinks b1813 and his brothers Joseph b1817 and Samuel b1821. I think his mother was called Ann and there will almost certainly be other siblings.

Any help would be gratefully received,

Brian

The Common Room / Alias Wales
« on: Monday 11 February 13 23:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone shed light on the practice of attaching the term "alias Wales" to some surnames particularly prior to early 1700's?

I have traced the Ashton family in Ashton-on-Mersey, Cheshire to a James Ashton to whom was applied this add-on in the baptism registers of his children, his burial register 1692 and in his Will.

The only reference that I can find is a suggestion that it is "ap Wales" denoting that the family originated from Wales.

Grateful to anyone who can help.

Brian

Hi,

I have found the marriage of John Swain and Emma Basse 26th Sep 1611 using Findmypast. The extract is from "Cheshire Marriage licence bonds and allegations 1606-1905".

I am unable to decipher anything but the names of the two individuals and in particular I cannot make out where the marriage took place.

This Swain family lived in Gawsworth around this period but the Gawsworth registers don't help.

I would be grateful of any ideas you may have. I have attached an extract.

Cheers
Brian

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / John Thompstone a Gawsworth miller NOW COMPLETED
« on: Monday 19 November 12 16:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have established a connection with John Thompstone of Gawsworth, Cheshire. In c1989 a book was published by Ann Laver(nee Thompstone) titled - "John Thompstone of Gawsworth Mill, 1742-1808 : his descendants and ancestors : a history of the Thompstone family from 1690."

The book appears on Amazon but is out of print and I have been unable to find a purchaseable copy anywhere. Cheshire CRO apparently do have a copy in their reference library.

Does anyone know of anywhere where I might obtain my own copy?

Thanks
Brian

Flintshire / Marriage registers for Whitford
« on: Thursday 03 May 12 12:14 BST (UK)  »
On a visit to Hawarden CRO some while ago, I traced a marriage record to the parish of Whitford. As findmypast has now added many of the Flintshire parish records to its collection I decided to look again at this same marriage via their system. The identical parish register page comes up on their site BUT is indexed as the parish of Nannerch. I have reported this to findmypast but wondered if anyone else has encountered a similar mistake?

For anyone interested the marriage is between Roger Ellis and Margaret Jones on 30th May 1789.

Brian

Canada / Emigrants to Sakatchewan 1911
« on: Monday 20 February 12 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Relatives of mine named Mansley emigrated to Canada in 1911 from England. I have found them on a passenger list (attached) which shows them bound for Saskatchewan. I am unable to interpret the name of the town or settlement. I would be grateful for any help in deciphering.

Clare / Tullee Co Clare
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 17:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me where the town of Tullee is in County Clare? My gggrandfather Patrick Scully was born in the early 1820's in County Clare. He served in the 25th Infantry for over 20 years and I have his military discharge papers. These state that he was born in the parish of Tullee in or near the town of Tullee in county Clare. He joined up at Limerick in 1838.

I can find no record of anywhere called Tullee in county Clare and am beginning to think that his Irish accent may have been mistranslated by the English recruitment officer. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Booth in Stone
« on: Monday 02 May 11 20:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I am looking for the baptism/birth of Mary Booth in Stone, Staffordshire around 1834-1842. On her marriage cert she gives father's name as Abraham occupation shoemaker. The earliest census I can find her in is 1861 when she is living in Salford, Lancashire.

I know there is an Abraham Booth, shoemaker in Stafford town who has a daughter Mary of the right age but according to IGI extract this Mary dies in 1841.

Does anyone have access to Stone parish regs? If so could they please take a look in the time period above.

Many thanks in anticipation
