My ancestor (David Murray of Balriddine) was murdered in 1680 but the testament wasn't confirmed until 1684.  Is this normal for this time period (killing times).  Janine

Scotland / Servitor to - what does it mean?
« on: Monday 17 January 22 11:16 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone please help me to explain the relationship between these two guys:  "John Murray servitor to Patrick, Commendatour of Lindoris".  Taken from a court case in 1598.

Patrick was Patrick Leslie of Pitcairlie (near St Andrew's Fife) and John Murray was an heir portioner of Aitket [Dumfriesshire].   So I don't think it means he was "a servant of" ..  :)

Dumfriesshire / Northfield and Gullielands
« on: Monday 03 January 22 01:32 GMT (UK)  »
The Historical Families of Dunfriesshire and the Border Wars CHAPTER X states ...
John Murray of Aiket showed a grant of the lands of Northfield and Gullielands under the great seal in 1604.

How do I find out exactly what these two areas covered?
Thanks
Janine

Australia / Kiama, NSW Birth - Hellen GRANT
« on: Thursday 30 August 18 09:31 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a birth record for Hellen GRANT born 14 August 1866 in Kiama.  Her father was Abraham GRANT and her mother was Ellen (noSurname)

Hellen and her father moved up to Mudgee and then Cobborah, NSW in 1867.  I don't know where Ellen went. (maybe she died in childbirth?)

I have checked the NSW BMDs and the Kiama independent BMDs but no luck.

Can anyone help please?  I don't really know where to look next.  Cheers J

Leicestershire / William Byers - Soldier
« on: Tuesday 11 October 16 07:09 BST (UK)  »
I have a record from nationalarchives.gov.uk which states that WILLIAM BYERS Born MARKFIELD, Leicestershire served in the 35th Foot.  He was born abt1783 and discharged from the 35th foot in 1825 at age 42.
Can anyone help me find a baptism record in Markfield please.
He doesn't appear on any online records (familysearch, ancestry or findmypast) and there doesn't appear to be any BYERS in Leicestershire in the late 1700's, let alone Markfield.  He is on the Chelsea pensioners list but there is no death or 1841 census record.
Much appreciated  ???

I am seeking general information on the Owen Glendower which transported  troops between England and Bombay during the years 1855 - 1856. I believe it was used by the East India Company but it may have been owned by Green.  ??? Any contribution greatly appreciated.  Janine
