Suffolk Lookup Requests / SRO Ipswich Newspaper Lookup - KINDRED
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 07:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello,  :)

I've been told that the SRO in Ipswich has newspapers on film. I am looking for the death of

Eliza Kindred who died 14 Jan 1829 age 17 and her sister, Lucy who died 18 Jan 1829 age 7 months in
Framlingham, Suffolk. Family lore has it that Eliza was accidentally. shot in the head by her fiance. It would seem
that something that unusual must have been in the local papers.

A rootschat friend told me that the "Framlingham Weekly News" is on film at the SRO in Ipswich and the paper goes back to 1819, so there is a good possibility that it will be there. She also said that there were other local newspapers from that era on film.

I would truly appreciate any help I can get. I would really like to solve this family mystery!

Thank You!

Suffolk / Was she really shot in the head?
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 01:11 BST (UK)  »
There is a family story about the girl in this drawing. There is no name on the original, so I don't really know who she is. I seem to remember my gran saying that her name was Elizabeth. The story goes that she was accidentally shot in the head with her father's gun by her fiance at the age of 18 yrs. old

I have an Elizabeth Kindred in that family line who was born in 1811 and died in 1829 in Framlingham, Suffolk, Eng. The fact that it is a drawing and not a photo suggests that it might have been made before photography existed, which would make her a good candidate.

Free BMD records only go back to 1837. I understand that Parish Records exist before 1837.  I do have family bible records that say that they attended St. Michael's in Framlingham. Does anyone know if parish records are available online? I live in the USA and won't be visiting Suffolk anytime soon. :(

Or, if anyone knows how I could find out what newspapers existed at that time and place and if newspaper records would be accessible online.

If she is Elizabeth Kindred and if she was shot in the head, it must have been a sensational story for a small town. Hopefully, there is a record of it.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!  ;)

FH Documents and Artefacts / What could this item of clothing be?
« on: Monday 30 March 09 00:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My mother gave me an old linen garment.  It is very simple with short sleeves, no lace or anything. Just ruffles on the short sleeves. The neckline is HUGE (about 2 ft wide) and there are no drawstrings or casings for a drawstring. I think it is an undergarment for a female, but she must have been 4 ft tall and about 3 ft wide, with shoulders like a modern football player! There is some very fine embroidery at the neckline in red that says S*K  6 1816. This comes from my Kindred family in Suffolk, Eng. I have quite a bit of info about this family, but no females with the letter "S" during this time period.

Any idea what type of garment this might be? Under garment, maternity garment, or possibly burial garment? And why it is so wide at the neck? My Kindreds were very short and none of them fat or wide. My own GF Kindred was 4'11" and about 85 lbs. This garment was in his possession and passed down to me.

Any help would be appreciated!

Sandy
