World War Two / Shoulder Badge
« on: Wednesday 06 November 19 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
This is my late father, Eric Davies. He served with the Royal Engineers during WW2. The picture shows him as a Lance Corporal - he went on to become a Corporal. My query is about the shoulder patch which is partially visible in the picture. Can anyone recognise what it might be?

Staffordshire / Gibbet Gate, Bilston
« on: Friday 30 January 15 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find information about Gibbet Gate, Bilston, ie where it was. I've got info about a family member who, according to the 1861 census, lived on "Wolverhampton Road by Gibbet Gate." Does anyone have any idea where on Wolverhampton Rd this gruesomely named place was? Any help would be gratefully received.

The Common Room / Edwards & Co.
« on: Monday 19 January 15 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace the history of Edwards and Co. who were home furnishers based at Tottenham Court Road, London. I know that the company was founded in 1887, and was still trading in 1928. I'm really more interested in who founded the company and where they originated from. Any help gratefully received.

Hi all!
It's been a long time since I've been on this particular board but I was wondering if I might avail myself of your services again. I have two pictures (I'll do separate posts) that need your skills. The first is a family member that no-one seems able to put a name to, and the second is an uncle that has passed away.

WW1 In Memoriam / 11th February 1918, William Ernest Lycett, 18, Royal Navy
« on: Friday 29 August 14 17:22 BST (UK)  »
Lycett William Ernest Ordinary Seaman J/43431 H.M.S "Cullist" Royal Navy Son of Edward and Winifred Lycett, of 61 Herbert St, Stafford St, Wolverhampton. Killed in action with submarine in Irish Sea. Died - 11 February, 1918. Aged - 18. Memorial - Portsmouth Naval Memorial - Hampshire, United Kingdom.

William was serving on HMS Cullist, a "Q" ship. These ships were used as decoy vessels to engage and, hopefully, destroy U boats preying on merchant shipping fleets. Unfortunately, the run of luck enjoyed by HMS Cullist ran out on Febrary 11th 1918 when, following a surprise attack, the ship was torpedoed and sank within minutes. The attacking U-boat, U-97, came to the surface and the crew tried to locate Lt.Cdr.Simpson. Although he was wounded and in the water, the submarine's crew could not locate him and thought he had been killed in action. The U-boat commander then took a number of prisoners of war on board to prove his victory and left the combat zone. The remaining personnel were later picked up by the trawler James Green. Of the total of 70 crewmembers, 43 were killed in action, amongst them was William Ernest Lycett (1st cousin, 2x removed). William's body was never recovered for burial..

Staffordshire / The Tunnel, Wolverhampton
« on: Thursday 26 June 14 16:50 BST (UK)  »
During some research on my family tree I came across a couple of Baptism records which gave the address of the parents as The Tunnel. The baptisms were carried out at Holy Trinity, Heath Town in the late 1800s. Having looked at the 1901 Heath Town map I couldn't see anywhere of that name, apart from the railway tunnel under what would now be the junction of Wolverhampton Road and Dean's Road. There is also the possibility that it could refer to the canal tunnel  at the bottom of Broad Street. The family were later living at Wolverhampton Road, Heath Town. Does anyone have any idea/knowledge of this peculiar address?  ??? Would appreciate any help you can give.

« on: Monday 10 December 12 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone could enhance this picture of a young soldier's headstone for me. It's not very clear and I'd like to get it done for the young man's niece. This is the largest image of the headstone I could get.
The text reads - 22964554 Private: R. BANKS: 1st Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment. 21st May 1956. Age 20.

Thanks

World War Two / 8th (Midlands) Parachute Battalion COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 22 November 12 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
While researching some family connections I came across Lance Sergeant Reginald Elwell, my 1st cousin 2x removed. He was killed on the 13 June 1943 "On Active Service". Trying to find out more, I Googled his name and regiment and found that many of his comrades also died on the same day. Nothing strange about that but, what did arouse my curiosity was the fact that, in all cases, the "theatre of war" was given as UK. Does anyone have an idea about the circumstances were that led to so many men from the same Battalion dying on the same day in the UK?
