London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / William Ross, lookup request please
« on: Monday 13 September 21 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

this is a compicated one, so I'll try to explane what I'm looking for.

Looking for any information about William Ross from Edinburgh Scotland.
According to census 1841 he was living in Southwark, John Street, West , nr. 11 with 14 other people.
He was 25 years old according to the census and he was a Lantern Maker.

I don't know where he was census 1851 and 1861.
Census 1871 has him living in Deptford (59 years old) with his nephew William T Nelthropp and niece Lydia J.
But....., William and Lydia (nee Noble) were married to each other since 1868.

So first question: if William Nelthropp was his nephew and Lydia was his niece how were these two both related to William Ross. I find this very confusing.

Second, third and fourth  question: where was William Ross in 1851 and 1861. When was he born and who were his parents. When and where did he die (I presum Lomdon area, but not sure).

Any help grately appreciated.

Oh btw, census 1841 shows that both William Nelthropp and Lydia Noble were living at the same address as William Ross (John Street, West, nr. 11, Southwark). So they knew each other probably all their lives.

Essex Lookup Requests / Elizabeth and Ann Oakes sisters ?
« on: Saturday 12 September 20 15:04 BST (UK)  »
Looking for information about Elizabeth and Ann Oakes

Elizabeth married John Winley (Windley) 1716 in Roxwell Essex ( I know that for sure)
Ann married (not 100% sure) Philip Windley between 1720 and 1723 ?, probably also in Roxwell

John and Philip were brothers  (both born Roxwell, 1689 and 1694, parents John and Elizabeth)
Is it possible that Elizabeth and Ann are sisters ? If yes, who were their parents ?
Both born 1690-1700 ?
So far I have not been able to find proof of that. I haven't even found the marriage of Ann and Phillip.

Anyone please?

looking for the marriage of Thomas Brown (b. abt. 1847, Belfast Ireland) and Emma Adsley (b. abt. 1849, where ?)

children:

Thomas Adsley Brown, 1875 Rochester, Kent
Emma brown, 1877 Winchester, Hampshire

Ellen Brown, 1882 South Africa
Alice Brown, 1886 South Africa
Charles Brown, 1888 Gibraltar
Lucy Brown, 1890 Chatham, Kent

because 3 children were born abroad, I now know why I couldn't find them in England census 1881

Are there any records of when they moved to South Africa and when they came back ?

But most important I would like to know when and where Thomas and Emma were married.

Kent Lookup Requests / Mercy Sophia Wilson (nee Pearce)
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 20:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Mercy Sophia Pearce married Benjamin Thomas Wilson in 1867.
Census 1871 has them living in Cliffe with daughter Alice.

After that Mercy dissapears from Benjamin's life.

I know she was in and out of workhouses from 1900 - 1912 (over 50 times)
what could the reason be that someone was in and out of workhouses so often ?
Sometimes a day, sometimes weeks. Always under the name Pearce and not Wilson ! Sometimes Mercy, other times Mary.

Census 1901 she's at St. George's hanover Union Workhouse Chelsea
Census 1911 she lives in Higham
She died in 1918 (name Wilson) in Higham (Poor Law Union Records)

so my questions:

where was she censuses 1881 and 1891.If she was in a workhouse are there any records ?
what could be the reason for so many times in a workhouse.
Excuse my question but is a workhouse a kind of prison or mental hospital ?

thank you
