Parish Register for marriage, Sept 21 1794, between JOHN KERSLAKE widower and BETTY SEARLE widow, Ide, Devon, original page number 27. Looking at the second witness signature, JOHN KERSLAKE JUN.

Parish register for marriage between JOHN KERSLAKE and FRANCES TAYLOR Exeter St Thomas, Devon, Feb 8 (?) 1801, original page number 216. Groom signature, JOHN KERSLAKE.

I am using a Kindle HD and do not have access to either a desk top, lap top or a printer and wondered if anyone could take a look at the originals (FindMyPast) and compare the two signatures. I think the signature of the first name of the witness in 1794 looks very much like the signature of the first name of the groom of 1801. I know the K in Kerslake looks similar but both 'r' and 's' are different....
I am going cross eyed flipping screens.

I am happy for anyone and everyone's input.

Thank you
Lady

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / John Fidler died "York Castle" 1811
« on: Saturday 31 October 15 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered John Fidler born c.1748, buried Stokesley, died at York Castle in 1811. As his profession was a miller in Stokesley, (The Mill was called Fidlers Mill), I can only assume he must have been imprisoned at the time of his death. Is there anyone who can advise me my next possible course of action 're: records of John Fidlers crimes? Debt perhaps? I am aware of a will registered/proved (?),  November 1811 for a John Fidler. I doubt there would be any mention of anything related to any debts accrued by John, or would there?

I live the other side of the country, (about 350 miles from Yorkshire) and cannot afford to pay for research.

I am grateful for any advice. In return, I would be able to photograph certain villages, cemeteries, streets etc of particular interest to researchers in parts of the west country. Please pm me and if the area is relatively close to me I would be very pleased to email photographs.

Thank you

I am attempting to trace Nellie Bone born 1881, from Middlesbrough, UK who may have been the Nellie recorded as a passenger on the Ivernia which departed Queenstown 7 Aug 1907 for Boston. If this is her and she stayed in USA and not accompanying a family she worked for, I am assuming she would have applied for 'citizenship'?

Would some kind rootschatter look up arrivals in Boston of that ship and see if she is on it please? Where would I find information on 'naturalization'? I do appreciate that just because she arrived in Boston would not mean she chose to 'root' there and of course it is possible she returned to UK or even travelled much much further north.

As always grateful thanks for any help.

Devon / John Glasby/Glassby/Gillepsie/Gillaspie
« on: Friday 21 September 12 13:01 BST (UK)  »
on the 1861 census, John Glasby, a mason living at 5 Middle Lane, St Andrew, Plymouth, is married to a Jane (Jenkins), with a two year old son John. I have two copies of births for the surname Glasby for the period 1857 to 1860 in the district of St Andrew, which should cover the period in question. One is for a William John Glasby born 4, Middle Lane on 25 November 1857 to a John Glasby, Labourer. The other is for a William Glasby born 12 November 1857, son of William Glasby also a labourer at 3, Middle Lane. Not a coincidence as these two are brothers and are living with their parents Francis and Ann in 1841 at Batter Street. The problem I have is whilst I believe I am able to trace my 2xgt Grandfather John Glasby, (Gillespie on his naval records) marrying from 9, Batter St, Plymouth to living with my grandmother and mother at least up to and during the first half of WWII, I am not sure of this as I cannot find any record of him officially as a William John Glasby. He is on the census' from '61 through to 1911 as John Glasby, married as John Gillespie in 1882, Gillespie on his daughter Mary's birth records of '83 and subsequent children from '84 as Glasby and name changed or recorded name change on his naval records from January '84 ("alias Gillespie") date of birth given as 9 May 1859. I also have in my possession a birth record for a John Gillespie, 20 July 1858, father John Gillespie, bootmaker, living at 2, Rendle Cottages, Plymouth.

Have I been particularly obtuse all these years in not really being able to establish who exactly my gt gt grandfather was?

Help!

Would someone be kind enough to look up Robert Anstruther (Anstruder) Strange, aged 29 in the '51 census. I know he was buried in West Malling in 1857. He was possibly an author and would be architect.

Many thanks

Donegal / Parish of Inecent??
« on: Saturday 30 June 12 10:23 BST (UK)  »
According to the discharge papers of 1823 of Private Francis Gillaspie, he was born in the Parish of Inecent, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. I've been googling til I'm blue in the face and cannot find this parish. Would someone be kind enough to help me out please. I should like to discover if there are parish registers available.

Grateful thanks

Occupation Interests / Ocham boy
« on: Friday 29 June 12 14:22 BST (UK)  »
I was surfing a few Family history related sites and came across the Genuki  "Plymouth Artificers (Alphabetical) 1779
National Archives ADM 106/2979" Some of the entries that come under the heading quality, (situation/profession?) it says Ocham boy. Can anyone enlighten me please? My husband thought it had something to do with sealing the ships with pitch? Just curious.

Many thanks

Debbie :)

Devon Lookup Requests / LOOK UP Plymouth '41 and 51 Jenkins/Jinkins etc..
« on: Thursday 28 June 12 15:12 BST (UK)  »
On the birth certificate of William John Glasby, 1857, Jane nee Jenkins is named as his mother, his father being John Glasby, living on Middle Lane St Andrews, Plymouth. The 1861 census has the family of three again at Middle Lane, Jane is 28 and a dressmaker. Her possible bro in law, William and his family, wife Ann and sons William and Francis are also living at Middle Lane. There is also a Caroline Jenkins in Middle Lane, aged 51 and married. I think perhaps this may be Jane's mother. She is recorded as being married but no Mr Jenkins seems to have been there at the time of the census.

I cannot find a marriage between John Glasby to Jane Jenkins on FBMD in or around Plymouth from 1850 to 1861. I have copy of the Plymouth census results for John and Jane for '61, 71, 81, 91 and 1901 and on each one she says she was born in Plymouth. Her age differs some 4 years every time, but I think she was born around 1833.

Would someone be kind enough to look up anyone with the name Jenkins/Jinkins (or any other sp) and particularly Caroline and Jane pre 1861 in Plymouth or surrounding.

Grateful thanks.

Debbie.
