Australia / Australian electoral rolls How to search via address only
« on: Saturday 05 September 20 10:39 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative at an address under her maiden name, living with her partner. They subsequently married but I can’t locate a marriage for her. I’d like to find out her partners name. Someone once sent me details of other people who lived at the same address of another ancestor but I can’t figure out how to use Ancestry’s electoral roll search to just look up an address in a certain year, (without a name); it only seems to let me search if I have a name. I’m sure it’s quite simple & someone will respond with a simple answer - thanks in advance if you can, mcvicars

Australia / Marriage details in Balmain if not in NSW BDM
« on: Wednesday 12 June 19 02:26 BST (UK)  »
I have spent many years tracking down an elusive great aunt, who may actually be my g/grandmother. Finally found her buried at Waterfall Sanatorium Cemetery (for TB). She was born Margaret Elizabeth MATTHEWS in Sofala, 1884 to Henry and Annie. I've just received her death certificate which lists her as Elizabeth Margaret MATTHEWS died age 64 in 1949 at Sanatorium & is buried there. (nb there's no public access to this disused site.) It states she was married to William MORRIS at the age of 19 in Balmain, NSW (so about 1903). Cemetery records say she was also known as MAY MORRIS. It lists her address as 21 Shellcore Rd Chullora NSW but it doesn't seem to exist & think it may be Shellcote Rd Chullora? I can find a William Morris living at no 10 with a Lillian May Morris, but Lillian is still listed on electoral roll at that address in 1963 so that can't be her. I can't find any marriage record on NSW BDM nor anything on ancestry. Can anyone give me an idea where else I can locate info on her marriage to William Morris etc. (forgive long post - family rumour is that she was ostracised for illegitimate child, which may actually be my grandfather, Walter. He's listed as child of Henry & Annie too, ie her youngest brother (born 1907) but it was common back then to “pretend” you are the parent when in fact you are the grandparent if your daughter had child out of wedlock).

Australia / John Outrim WASCOE and Mary ROBERTS at Wattle Flat
« on: Thursday 25 April 13 10:12 BST (UK)  »
John Outrim Wascoe (1819-1891) licencee of Pilgrim Inn, is buried at Wattle Flat. His headstone was erected by Mary Roberts, trying to find who she was. He was married to Sarah McPeake in 1864. Here's the inscription http://austcemindex.com/inscription.php?id=1525689
Any clues? Was she related? His birth record says his mother was Mary...did she perhaps remarry?

Lanarkshire / Christina CRAIG (nee MILLAR) b abt 1815 Glasgow
« on: Saturday 07 January 12 11:29 GMT (UK)  »
I’ve been looking for a death record for Christina CRAIG (nee MILLAR, b abt 1815) between 1851 and 1854, as her husband (who she married in 1835 in Govan) James Craig remarried in 1854 to Mary Buchanan.
In 1841 James and Christina were living in Partick, Old Bridore End, Barony
However, she appears as head of household, age 33 in 1851 census with 4 of her children: Isabella, William, John, Mary in Castlewalk St Mathews, Partick, Govan.  (plus lodger Charles Kerr); indicating that they may have separated? I can’t locate a death record for her under “Craig” surname, but wonder if she remarried? I cant find a marriage record for her though.
Any help in locating her remarriage and/or death greatly appreciated.

Australia / Margaret Elizabeth MATTHEWS b 1884 Sofala/Lithgow
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 10:06 BST (UK)  »
Margaret Elizabeth Matthews born 13 Jul 1884 in Sofala, New South Wales, Australia
(NSW BDM 14262/1884 MATTHEWS, MARGARET E to HENRY & ROSANAH )
Father: Henry John Matthews (1859 – 1923), mother Rosannah McPeake (1865-1937). She was the eldest of their 9 children. When  one of her sister’s was born in 1900 she was listed by her middle name “Elizabeth” and was 16 years old, and as “Elizabeth” age 23 when her brother was born in 1907. On her father Henry’s death certificate in 1923, she is listed as Elizabeth M aged 38; but when her mother dies in 1937, she is not listed as one of the 6 remaining children and it notes that 1 male (Henry Jnr) and 2 females are deceased(she had a sister die in 1916). So it may be she died between 1923 and 1937. In 1900 the family lived at Wattle Flat but by 1907 were in Lithgow, NSW.
Here’s the big mystery though, a family member recalls stories of her having an illegitimate child and being ostrasized from the family. So was she deceased or just “ignored”? This “illegitimate child” story is critical in my family research – it will change my whole lineage if the story is true.
But I can’t find any trace of her, a marriage or death, only these references to her as Elizabeth in birth & death records. I would LOVE to find out where she went; if she had other children, and maybe with some luck, find someone tracing her who may have also heard this family story and has more information on it to share.
I have tried everywhere with no luck, please help if you can; so that I can discover if she’s an “ gt aunt” or my gt g/mother!

I have James McPeake's 1905 Australian death certificate which lists  his birth as approx 1835 in Co Derry, N Ireland to parents John McPeake, a labourer, and mother Margaret Maybury.
James came to Australia in 1859 on Daphne with his wife Rosanna and children William John (6) and Sarah (2).

Australia / Ship arrival lookup of CORBETTS 1828-47
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
Susannah Corbett was listed on her son Henry’s birth certificate as aged 31 when he was born in 1859 ( so her birth year 1827-1828) and that she was born in Bristol, England. As she married in Australia in 1847 (to Thomas Matthews age 20 on 26 April 1847 in Wesleyan Methodist Church, Sydney) she must have arrived by ship either alone or with family between her birth year 1828 and 1847. I have had no luck finding her on any shipping lists; can anyone give me some clues please? I need her parents names to then locate her English birth and maybe census records.
