For Sale / Wanted / Events / Pubs and Inquests in Minera by J Clifford Davies
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 10:47 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the book, Pubs and Inquests by J Clifford Davies is still available?  I have searched online but cannot find a copy.  My 2 x gt grandfather, Simon Jones, was killed in a gas explosion at the Minera Lead Mines in November 1868 but as there was an election at the time, it was not reported in the local newspapers.  Any help would be appreciated.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Monty Fine, Penrhiwceiber
« on: Monday 27 June 22 10:45 BST (UK)  »
One of my great aunts apparently lived in a basement flat under the Monty Fine Department Store on the Penrhiwceiber Road, Penrhiwceiber in the 1950s.  Does anyone know where on the Penrhiwceiber Road this store was situated?  I cannot find anything on the internet, and electoral rolls do not appear to be available online, so any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Warwickshire / Missing birth record
« on: Sunday 05 July 20 11:03 BST (UK)  »
A family member, (now sadly deceased),was adopted shortly after his birth in 1945. He knew his birth name so I have managed to obtain his original birth certificate for his immediate family. This shows his birth mother was a Miss McCormack who lived in Rugby.  From her death record on Ancestry it appears she was born in May 1924 in Rugby but I cannot find a birth record for her

As record offices are closed, I am stuck as to where to look next.  She would have needed a birth certificate, I presume, to get married which she did a few years later.  I am aware that she may have relatives still living who may not know she had an illegitimate child so I have not given her full name and date of death.

Could her mother simply have not registered the birth? If so would it be possible to register later or if not registered at all, what would be the implications for her?

World War Two / WW2 records for Bicester
« on: Wednesday 17 June 20 14:36 BST (UK)  »
My son in law’s grandmother, Margaret McCormack, born 1924 in Rugby, served in the ATS at Bicester.  In 1939 she was living in Rugby and was an aircraft inspector.  We do not know when she moved to Bicester or what the ATS did there.  Can anyone help us find out more information about Margaret or tell us what she may have been doing? We are thinking of applying to the MOD for her service record but we are not sure she would be included.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Electoral Rolls 1922 and 1925 - Wilby and Leighton
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
I need help in finding out who lived at 3 Bebbington Street, Clayton, Manchester in 1922 and 1925.
A distant relative, Charlotte Leighton, lived at 25a Howard Street, Eccles New Road, Salford but died at 3 Bebbington Street, Clayton, Manchester on 4 Aug 1925.  Three years earlier on 2 Mar 1922 Annie Elizabeth Wilby, servant, also of 25a Howard Street, died at 3 Bebbington Street.  In 1911, No. 3 is described as a six bedroomed house, so definitely not a hospital.  I have not found any family connection to this address so my next step is to find who is living there at the time of their deaths. If anyone can help further my research I would be very grateful.

Armed Forces / Identify cap badge
« on: Sunday 09 February 20 15:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone identify the cap badge worn by my uncle, Kenneth George Thomas?  A family member says his regiment was at Bergen-Belsen when it was liberated but without knowing which regiment he served in we have no idea if this could be true.  Any help would be much appreciated.  Apologies if I have done this wrong.

Family History Beginners Board / Williams/Body/Jones Families
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to find a family for sometime but I am not sure of their surname.

What I know is there were two sisters, Jean and Mair, one of whom was a teenager in 1960s, so was born 1950's.  They lived in Glamorgan in or around Penrhiwceiber/Mountain Ash.

Their grandmother was Lizzie.  She had two daughters (maybe other children) called Meg and Glan.  One of these daughters married a Philip and the other an Iorwerth.  Iorwerth was killed in a quarry accident.

There is a Philip Williams in the family and he married a Margaret Thomas but the children’s names don’t match.

I know there is not much to go on but I was hoping that someone might know the sisters, Jean and Mair.

Can anyone shed any light on this family mystery?

Family History Beginners Board / Ruth Williams
« on: Monday 17 September 18 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Ruth Williams was born in the March qtr 1903 in Pontypridd district, probably in Mountain Ash.  Her parents were Llewelyn Williams and Elizabeth Ann (nee Body).  She had two younger brothers, William James and Llewelyn.

If anyone has access to the Glamorgan FHS marriage records for the parish Church of St Winifred’s, could they check for me to see if there is a marriage record for her.  (I have lost my copy). I have searched online for her marriage but cannot identify the correct one. I know that Ruth had two daughters but other than that and her approx birth date she has proved very elusive.

Thank you.

Family History Beginners Board / Cleverly/Rutty/Smith
« on: Monday 13 August 18 12:04 BST (UK)  »
Eliza Rutty married Herbert Alfred Smith on 27 Oct 1898 in Pewsey, Wiltshire.   Herbert died in 1904.  On 30 Jul 1904 an Eliza Smith (widow) marries George Cleverly (Cleverley) in Wilsford, Wiltshire. So far so good.  On the 1911 census George and Eliza can be found in nearby North Newton with three children, Percy born 1895, Frank born 1897 and Margery born 1899. On the 1911 census George has recorded that they have been married 7 years which fits in with their marriage in 1904.

On checking the births of the children (and an older child Hester born 1892) they are all registered with the surname Cleverly/Cleverley, mother’s name Smith. So are they George’s children or not? Was Eliza having children by George before and during her marriage to Herbert or is there another family I have got confused with.
