Australia / 1999 Death
« on: Sunday 16 April 17 12:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have been trying to find information about a death that occurred in 1999. The person was my father's great aunt and she died in Sydney in 1999. She had a history of mental illness, never married and the only child she had was adopted out at the beginning of WW2 (cue the mental illness, according to family reports). She was admitted to Callum Park, again, don't know if it was a recurrent admission or a 'one off'. I have been able to find her on electoral rolls up until the 1970's.

Does anyone know if I might have any success applying to BDM for her death certificate? I don't know who her official next of kin would have been, but her siblings are all deceased now too.

Myself and a distant cousin think it's really sad that no-one knows anything about her, or where she's buried. We'd like to find her resting place and pay our respects. We realise we'll probably never find her son.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Tracey.

Armed Forces / Warrant Officer in Highland Regiment
« on: Sunday 30 June 13 08:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

An ancestor of my husband was, according to family stories, a Warder of the Tower of London and he had also been a Warrant Officer in a Highland Regiment.

The family is being discussed here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,651876.new.html#new  for background information.

I know from the birth of his daughter Elizabeth in 1820 born in London, England(my husband's 4x grandmother) that he was William Atchison and his wife was a woman named Ann.

On Elizabeth's marriage record his profession was given as colourman, not anything military.

The information from the diary of Elizabeth's nephew Thomas Try, names her father as Alexander Aitchison (which is incorrect) a Warder of the Tower of London and former Warrant Officer in a Highland Regiment.

I haven't been able to locate a death record for William and I wondered how to go about finding if there's any truth to the Highland Regiment story. It already looks like the Warder of the Tower has been discounted.

Does 'Highland' necessarily mean Scottish? The family came to Australia in 1853, so these definitions are a bit new to us.

Hoping someone will be able to help point me in the right direction.

Regards,
Tracey.

London and Middlesex / Liberty of the Tower of London
« on: Thursday 27 June 13 09:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out where my husband's ancestors were married and if it's somewhere we can visit in September when we're in London.

According to the marriage certificate, John Christian Try married Elizabeth Ann Atchison March 5th 1843 at 'the Parish Church in the Parish of the Holy Trinity Minories in the Liberty of the Tower of London'.

I've done a bit of research and I think I understand what the Liberty of the Tower of London is/was, but I'd like to know if this was a church anyone could marry in and if it still exists today.

He was a silversmith and the son of Thomas Try, a machinist and she was the daughter of William Atchison, a color-maker. I also searched his address (8 Union Street, Tower Hill) but couldn't find where it exists today.

As we're travelling from Australia and only have a week in London, we want to make best use of our time.

Looking forward to what you can tell me.

Regards,
Tracey Ellis.

United States of America / American Civil War
« on: Saturday 09 October 10 06:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My husband's family have a 'story' that an ancestor travelled from Scotland to fight for the Union in the American Civil War. I'd love to be able to prove this one way or the other. I know how 'family stories' can be!

His name was Jackson Clarke and he was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1839. After allegedly fighting in the Civil War, he returned to Scotland, married, then emigrated to Australia. I have a record of his journey to Australia, so that bit is correct.

Is there a searchable data base of soldiers who fought in the war and if so, how do I find it? I've looked on castlegarden for immigration records, but found nothing. I don't know where else to look and would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks,
Tracey.

Australia / Tragedy at Bontherambo/Wangaratta Cemetery request
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 10:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Hoping someone near Wangaratta Cemetery can help me out by taking some photos of family graves.

They are:

Joseph Dobson and wife no. 2  Mary - Methodist 116S buried 12 Sept 1898 and 1 Nov 1898.

Sarah Ann Dobson (wife no. 1) - C of E row 1 buried 16 Apr 1867.

George Dobson (son of Joseph)  - Methodist 141N buried 29 Aug 1894.

George's children: Jane, George and Frederick - Methodist 116C buried 29 Aug 1894.

Plot information from Wangaratta Council.

The tragedy is that George snr killed 3 of his 5 children at Bontherambo and also another adult Peter Dinsdale while of 'unsound mind'. I won't go into details as it may upset some readers, but it was very violent.

I have checked the Argus and found reports in 2 separate editions, does anyone know how to find the actual inquest records?

Also, George's occupation was given as 'selector'. Can anyone explain what that means please?

If anyone can take these photos, please PM me and I'll supply an email address.

Appreciate any help with any of the above.

Regards,

Tracey.

Australia / Sands Directory equivalent in Melbourne?
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 05:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have my husband's g.g.grandfather's death certificate and I am trying to find out if there is anything in Melbourne like the Sand's Directory that Sydney has. Or are the electoral rolls available to search?

His name was Joseph Dobson and he died 15th Dec 1898, "Spring Street, Albert Ward, East Melbourne, County of Bourke, Melbourne". If he died at home, I'm wondering how I can find out what number Spring St he lived at. We're going to Melbourne in a couple of weeks, and would like to check it out if I can find it.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I'm hoping someone with access can please look for the birth of a daughter to George Brown and Mary Ann (nee Clarke) after 1909. They lived at Berridale, near Cooma, so I'd expect the registration to be around those parts.

George died in 1928, leaving one living daughter, Doreen A, born 1908, and one female deceased.

Thanks in anticipation,

Tracey.

London and Middlesex / OLIVE children - which are their's?
« on: Friday 09 July 10 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Hope I can get some ideas here.........

The short version of my question - is there any way to find out the parents of a child who was born or died, without buying the certificate?

The long version - George Olive married Jane Charlotte Brooks June 1/4 1860 in Kensington. I don't have the certificate.
1871 census lived at Star Lane, Fulham; 1881 census lived at Star Lane, Fulham; 1891 census, George is dead (died 1885) but Jane still lives Star Rd, Fulham.

On the census their children are listed as Emma born 1866 (GRO Dec 1/4 1865), William born 1871 (GRO Sept 1/4 1870), and Annie born 1880 (GRO Dec 1/4 1879).

With the big gaps between their births, I assumed there were babies who died. On freebmd I have found 4 who might fit the gaps who were born and died registered at Kensington,
Jane Charlotte born June 1/4 1861 - died Sept 1/4 1861
John William born Mar 1/4 1863 - died Sept 1/4 1866 (aged 2) ?? same one??
Eliza Maria born Dec 1/4 1867 - died Mar 1/4 1870 (aged 2)
George James born Dec 1/4 1872 - died Mar 1/4 1873;

one at Fulham, Maria born Dec 1/4 1877 - died Dec 1/4 1878
and one, Mary Ann,born Kensington Sept 1/4 1874 and died Mile End, Sept 1/4 1874

Given that the mother is Jane Charlotte, I really like the chances of the baby Jane Charlotte belonging, and maybe the baby George, I'm very doubtful about the one who died at Mile End.

I'd love to know the answer to the short version of the question and also, which would you go for given this information.

Many thanks,
Tracey,
Australia.

Australia / Running out of ideas to find Henry ADAMS
« on: Friday 17 July 09 08:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi Helpful People,

I have been in contact with a person in England, Christine, who may (or more that likely not) share an ancestor with me.

I offered to help her try and track his life in Australia, but I'm stumped already. She's ok with me asking you folks for help. Here's the story so far:

Christine's grandfather, Henry Adams, was born on 25 December 1895 in Bethnal Green, London. He had no middle name.

His parents were William George Adams and Jane Sophia Adams[nee Ormes].
Henry married Emily in 1919. The story was that he was wounded in WW1 and she nursed him.

In 1920 when Christine's father, Robert was born, Henry was living in Hackney, London. He was a borough surveyors' clerk. Their 2nd child Allen lived for a few months and died. When Emily was expecting their 3rd child, Henry disappeared. Emily named the 3rd child Peter Allen Adams.

The family received a letter for Robert, dated January 1925 but postmarked August 1925 from Henry. It was posted in Birregurra, Victoria, Australia.

Christine feels that Henry might have changed his name. Allen is a possibility due to his 2nd child.

I have searched NSW BDM for deaths for Henry Adams and Allen Adams. I don't have access to Vic BDM. There is no record for either name travelling to Australia in ozships or findmypast.

Is this a hopeless cause?? Thanks.

Tracey.
