Argyllshire / McLean
« on: Sunday 30 July 23 11:38 BST (UK)  »
I’m researching for a friend and she is sure her ancestors are from Mull. I can’t however find any of the names she has given me actually in Mull.

I have a John McLean and Jessie McDougall marrying in Easdale in 1891 and this gives Johns parents as Archie McLean and Ann McGregor.

I think it might be Archie and Ann who are the links to Mull.  I was wondering if someone could suggest the best way to proceed.

Scotland Resources / Police records

My great grandfather was attacked in Neilston Renfrewshire, subsequently dying of his wounds in Western Infirmary 5/7/1885.
Before he died he gave a deposition to the Sheriff. Amazingly I have a copy of his handwritten hospital notes which are fascinating.
I wonder if anyone can offer advice about the best way to find out if there is a record of this deposition and where I might find it. I don’t know if his assailant was ever charged. I’ve tried looking at newspapers of the time without any success.
My gt grandfather’s name was Charles Gallacher and his attacker surname Lynch.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Catholic Orphanage Abercrombie st GLASGOW
« on: Monday 08 November 21 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have found in 1891 census a Daniel and Andrew Gallacher. They are both born in Barrhead and their ages are the same as 2 of my ancestors who were born in Barrhead.
The only thing is that their parents are still alive. I’ve checked their family 1891 census and they’re not on it. This makes me think it could indeed be them in the home.
Would it be possible for a family to ‘pretend’ the boys needed to go into the home or could there be another reason?

Renfrewshire / Fight outside pub in Neilston
« on: Saturday 06 February 21 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
My 3x gt grandfather, Charles Gallocher was involved in a fight with a man outside a pub in Neilston, Renfrewshire in 1885.  He subsequently died of his injuries in the Western Infirmary.  It’s a mystery how he would have got to the hospital as they were a very poor family.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of how to find possible police records and / or newspaper reports of the fight or his death. Thanks

Renfrewshire / Barrhead Lamplighter/Commisioner
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
The Rachel O’Neil I mentioned in my ‘shop’ post was married to John O’Neil.  John was a Lamplighter but in the 1911 census as well as his occupation being Lamplighter it notes his Employer as ‘Town Council, Burgh Commisioner’.
Could someone shed any light on the significance of this?

Renfrewshire / Barrhead shop
« on: Thursday 05 November 20 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Grandmother, Rachel O’Neil had a shop in Barrhead sometime around 1896 - 1928.  Unfortunately I have no idea what kind of shop it was or where!
I imagine it would be a ‘grocer’ or sweetie shop and probably named O’Neil’s.  She was previously Rachel Boyle but I’m pretty sure she only had the shop when she became and ‘O’Neil’.   Rachel lived in Glasgow Rd/Printers Row and then laterally Craigheads St, I’m thinking the shop would be near her home.
I would be grateful if anyone can help with any further information or point me in the right direction To find out more.

Donegal / Clondavaddog - Sweeney/ Kelly
« on: Saturday 09 April 16 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I live in Scotland and have been working on my family tree with some success BUT it would seem that all roads lead back to Ireland, which I'm delighted and proud of but I really don't know how to proceed. Read books, looked on the internet but I have so many names and very few leads. What I do know is that one of my gt gt gt grandparents lived in Clanvaddog, Doaghcrabbin Donegal. Their names were John Sweeney married to Agnes Kelly., married around 1820's .They had sons Ralph and Miles. Ralph born around 1828 and Miles, I think was younger. Miles was married in Ayr Scotland in 1856 so obviously arrived in Scotland some time before that. If anyone can help with any information about the families I'd be so grateful.

Ireland / Markie / Markey
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 12:19 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for information on a Michael Markie born somewhere in Ireland around 1836.  His parents were Daniel Markie and Margaret Kelly.  As far as I know Michael had an older brother, Peter   Both Michael and Peter moved to and settled here in Scotland.  I would love to trace info about Daniel Markie and Margaret Kelly and trace their bmd's and their ancestors.  I know without an exact place of birth or marriage etc it  is a long shot but would be so grateful if anyone could give me any information on the family or suggestions as how to research it from here in Scotland. Thanks

Donegal / Sweeney
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 12:11 BST (UK)  »
I live in Scotland and am trying to find information about Myles Sweeney born around 1825-1835.  As far as I can see he had a brother Ralph born after Myles.  Their parents were John Sweeney and Agnes (Nancy) Kelly.  According to census here in Scotland the family were from Donegal.  Ralph and Myles came over to Scotland and settled here.  I would be most grateful if anyone could help me trace where and when John and Agnes were married, their parents names and whether they had any other children.
Irish records are a bit difficult to access here in Scotland so any help, suggestions or information would be very much appreciated.  Thanks
