Armed Forces / 3rd Dragoon Guards - troops and divisions
« on: Thursday 18 January 24 03:04 GMT (UK)  »
My g-g-Grandfather Michael Gaugharty was in the 3rd Dragoon Guards from October 1828 to May 1853.  I have his Army Records and his number is given as 284. I have the movements of the Regiment which were listed on an old post here, but it refers to 'a troop' and '1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions'.  Is there any way I can discover which troop/division he was in?  His Army Records do not provide this information.

Gloucestershire / Marriage at St Mary Redcliff
« on: Sunday 01 May 22 11:29 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm a marriage between Henry Davis and Mary Turner on or about the 10th August  1820.   Many others researching this family have this date but no one has been able to produce the actual record.  I am wondering if anyone who might have access to the parish records could check for me.
Many thanks
Mary

Gloucestershire / Kingswood
« on: Tuesday 19 March 19 08:55 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Will dated 1597 stating the person was from Kingswood Wilts, despite all the family before and after being from areas around Kingswood Gloucestershire.  In an Indenture concerning his son in National Archives there is a statement "  Kingswood, Wiltshire [recte Gloucestershire],"  I think recte means rightly or correctly.
I am wondering why these people seemed to be confused over the county they were in.

I would welcome any ideas
Many thanks

Gloucestershire / Help with illegible record
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm wondering if there is anyone who is familiar with Gloucestershire who might know the place in the second line down - Brice Webb of Rough ???   It looks as though it might be Court but I really don't know.   I know there is a Rough Bank Butterfly Conservation Park at present but it's obviously not that.
This was a record of a Quaker burial in 1670.

Many thanks

Gloucestershire / Ercott Gloucestershire
« on: Friday 15 March 19 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know of this place?  A marriage record (1677) states the bride's father (dec'd)  was from Ercott, Gloucestershire but I am unable to find any reference to this place.  It must have been reasonably close to Bristol as that's where she was married.

Thanks

Australia / Newick family Bristol to Victoria Australia
« on: Friday 21 September 18 05:32 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo taken about 1975 of 'Wally and Ruby' (presumably Wally 's surname was Newick but it may be that it was Ruby who was a Newick)
Wally (Walter ?)  would have been born around 1905 in Bristol but at the time of the photo he and Ruby were living in Victoria, Australia.

I have searched high and low for these two but with no luck.  I just wondered if anyone in Australia was researching a Newick family
Thanks

Gloucestershire / Bitton Parish Registers
« on: Saturday 04 August 18 11:43 BST (UK)  »
There seems to be a gap in the records of Bitton Parish Registers from about 1674 to about 1754.  Does anyone know if these are available somewhere and able to be accessed?

Thanks
Mary

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sheffield Wills
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered my father died in Sheffield in 1986 but does not appear to have had any next of kin at that time as a non-relative was the 'Informant'.  He had been estranged from the family for many years.

I cannot find any marriage in Sheffield for him or any child born at the relevant time (1952 onwards) and was wondering if he actually left a Will which might provide some further information or if there was no Will, possibly Letters of Administration.

I have his address at the time of his death.

Can anyone tell me how I might find this information.

Monmouthshire / St Woolos Army Barracks, Newport Mon.
« on: Saturday 23 September 17 06:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have a James McGowan dob 1812 Ireland at the Barracks in 1861 occupation 'Barracks Labourer - Pensioner' with his wife Catherine dob 1816 Ireland.  I assume he was a Chelsea Pensioner.  He had three daughters - Jane 1850 in Scotland, Catherine 1852 in Ireland and Lucy 1854 in Newport so I am guessing he moved around with the Army.

I can't find James prior to 1861.
I've tried to discover his Regiment etc. but no luck.  Also, to obtain Chelsea Pensioner records from the National Archives (which I had done in a previous case some years ago) it now refers me to Find My Past, of which I am not a member. (I subscribe to Ancestry),  When entering the limited details I do have on FindMyPast there is a list of James McGowan in the Army and I have no idea which one it might be.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this please?

Thanks
