Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioner help
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi ,(newbie here)
I am trying to find out about my grandpa and have got stuck. Can anyone help me?.
His name was Charles Edward Walker. b:1881 in Sheffield.
He served in the Boer War in South Africa and also in WW1 in a yorkshire regiment. I believe east yorkshire regiment.
I can find no trace in the 1901 census but I know he married Harriet Matilda Stanley b: 1885 in london before WW1. I think in 1904.
She died in 1944 and is buried in Slough cemetary, and he became a chelsea pensioner until he met and married a daisy leach in bridlington 10 years later. I am told he died in 1964 and is buried in Bridlington although I havent been able to track this death in the BMD info. So in order to find out a bit more about him I thought I would try the Chelsea pensioner route.
I have a photo of him wearing his Chelsea pensioner uniform and he is wearing 5 medals which could be from both wars?. (is that right?). What I cannot understand is I thought CP could only be one if they were born in London? Can anyone help? There are hundreds of  C.Walkers and C.E. Walkers in the WW1 records. Where do I start?.
Thanx Rox
