Leicestershire / Hunts/Websters of Thurnby
« on: Tuesday 03 May 22 19:33 BST (UK)  »
This is a bit of a strange request. I composed the piece below for a DNA contact who believed I was connected to him through Websters and Westons. I found the Hunts last year when trying to fill in boxes suggested by Lost Cousins. I have found out quite a lot coming forward from this family, but not been able to find any more about John Hunt (Clerk). I have tried various clerical records, only finding a vague possibility in Northamptonshire. Any help would be welcome.

I do have another Webster in my tree. Ann Webster was my father's maternal great grandmother - his paternal great grandmother was Sarah Hunt. There is an entry in the Parish Register of Thurnby, now a south eastern suburb of Leicester as follows:

John, born March 26, 1784        )  The reputed children of John Hunt,
Elizabeth, born March 25, 1788 )  Clerk, and Jane Webster, were all
Ann, born Jan 27, 1791             )  baptized_____May 15, 1807
Orlando, born Dec 30, 1798       )

The Revd John Hunt was buried in Thurnby on July 13, 1806. In his will he left significant amounts of money and property to all four children, and "£1000 to my servant, Jane Webster". In the records, he is always John Hunt, Clerk. Sarah's father (above) was John Hunt, Gent, and his son, Sarah's brother, was John Hunt, Surgeon - he was a prominent member of the Leicestershire Antiquarian Society who was regularly published in their Journal and showed historical artifacts from his collection at events throughout the County. He also gave a stained glass window to the Thurnby Parish  Church, while his uncle, Orlando, gave a bell! John Hunt, Gent, died in 1816 at the age of 32 - Sarah's mother remarried fairly quickly, and although Sarah was in her brother's household in 1841, she was then married off to a farmer who was over 50 at the date of their marriage. I have not found Jane Webster yet. Although Thurnby is the opposite side of Leicester to Markfield, where the Websters and Westons were, there could be a connection there.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Margarete Charlotte Lindau
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 23:09 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help a friend from Germany. Her great grandmother, Margarete Charlotte Lindau (or Lindow) was born in Manchester on 08.12.1908. Her father, Herman is believed to have been interned. Margarete returned to Dortmund before 1930, when our friend's grandfather (who is still living) was born. They have never known the identity of his father. When I try to look up Margarete's birth on FindMyPast and Ancestry, there appears to be no record. Is it possible, that as German citizens, they did not have to register the birth? Any suggestions of places to look for Margarete (or her father's internment details) would be welcomed.

Hope someone (Mike?) could help me with another little puzzle. My great grandfather Joseph Blakesley (often transcribed as Blaksley) lost my great grandmother (Emma) in June quarter 1882 when my gran was 4. In Sep quarter 1883 he married again - according to freeBMD to Sarah Ann BLAKSLEY. As this sounds a little unusual could any other sources be checked?
Thanks in anticipation
Richard

Hi KK

I see I'm not allowed to post this in a reply to your post, and I couldn't attach it to a PM (for whatever reason), but here is the report from the Bournemouth Echo of 30th September 1943.

Leicestershire / John Pole b.1829
« on: Saturday 05 February 11 20:25 GMT (UK)  »
My Pole tree has been thrown into confusion by contact from a GR member who has info at variance to that which has been passed to me. It is probably as a result of there being several Charles & Elizabeth Poles. Could someone (perhaps Mike?) seek out mother's maiden name for John Pole - born 24 August 1829, and baptised 13 September 1829 in Belgrave. I would be very grateful and will probably then seek further answers!

The Common Room / Passenger Lists - Tanner
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone with suitable access to New York Passengers 1820 ~ 1957 have a quick look for Thomas Tanner (or Tunner) and Mary Tanner? That would be most helpful.

I wonder if anyone can help. There is a marriage on the free BMD for Henry Rogers in Dec qtr 1909, Vol 5c - but no page number. There is a note suggesting the transcriber found the page no. illegible. If anyone has access to marriage records, I am trying to check his wife's name - I think it should be Rose. He was from Montacute, in 1901 he was living at his sister's in West Coker, and the family had connections with Chinnock.

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Eliza Cox - Dingley Burial?
« on: Thursday 25 March 10 22:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hope someone may be able to help. I have Eliza Cox (aged 35) on the 1841 census in Dingley (HO107/Piece797/Book:8/Folio:5/Page:22). On the BMD deaths in Mt Harbro', Mar qtr 1844 Vol15, Page 140, there is also Eliza Cox. Can anyone see a Dingley burial which might make the link of the two records more likely.

Leicestershire / Phillimores and Birstall
« on: Thursday 18 March 10 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
This might be one for Mike, though someone else may know. In Phillimores introduction to Birstall registers he comments on the earliest register from 1574 already being a transcript of an earlier book. He also draws attention to Bishop's Transcripts for several years in the 1560's containing some 50 further marriages which "are in the Archdeacon's Registry in Leicester." Does anyone know if these still exist and where they are?
