Cavan / Lookup please, Co. Cavan, Ire. Deaths for Dorathea GRIFFITH.
« on: Monday 19 September 11 06:29 BST (UK)  »
The IGI gives two deaths for Dorathea/ Dorothea Griffith. Cavan Ireland.

1/ Born 1812, died April- June 1884 age 72, Vol 3, Page 73, Digital Folder 4200674.
2/ Born 1836, died Oct-Dec 1903, age 67, Vol 3, Page 57, Dig Folder 4201706.
I think the death in 1812 is the one I`m after but the 1836 death could be a relation.

I`d really like to know Dorathea`s maiden name but dont hold out much hope, depending on the information shown, if they mention a marriage date, husband etc.

I`ll give you what info I have about Dorathea/ Dora Griffith. Don`t know when or where born or when she married David Griffith who died in July 1854 according to Old Cavan Newspapers on net.
David & his two brothers, Thomas & Nathaniel Griffith all had plantation estates on St Croix, Virgin Islands, in their younger manhood.
Thomas  born 1804, Cavan, died in 1848 in St Croix, his wife Mary Anne and their three children returned to Cavan where Mary Anne died in 1850 at Bailieborough. Children; Helen, Tomas Hunter & Charles Lucas Griffith, all immigrated to Australia.
Nathaniel was born in 1811 and died Apr-June 1893, Cootehill Cavan as did his wife, Ann, born 1813. They had four children. William, Mary Elizabeth, Ann Hunter & James Griffith.

So David could have married Dorathea in St Croix, they had two sons. Edmond who died without issue in 1856 and John who married Elizabeth Ferguson born Louth 1842/3. Elizabeth was still alive in 1911 Cavan Census but John her husband was dec`d before 1901 cencus.

They had 4 children; Female Griffith born 12 Dec 1872, David born 25 May 1875, Elizabeth born 14 Feb 1877 and John Ferguson Griffith born 24 Apr 1879, all still alive 1911.

Dorothea & David Griffith lived at Griffith Lodge, Artonagh & family Tomkin Road, Cavan. Griffith family properties shown in Griffith Valuation for Cavan 1848-1864, actual year 1857.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Cavan / Census lookup Templeport, Co. Cavan / HUGGINS
« on: Wednesday 30 December 09 06:17 GMT (UK)  »
In Griffiths Valuation of Ireland 1848-1864 for the Parish of TEMPLEPORT, Co CAVAN. The site gives this info which I`m pretty sure is my  HUGGINS ancestors.

HUGGINS  Blakely    Townland; Boley.        Barony Tullyhaw.
HUGGINS * Blakeley     ''           Killyran.

I think the first BLAKELY HUGGINS ( parents ANDREW & MARGARET HUGGINS nee BLAKELY marr 1774), married ANN PRINGLE and had 9 children.

ANDREW H    b 1831     marr               Elizabeth.
*BLAKELEY H b 1832?   Marr 1855      Lilly GOODFELLOW.
JANE ANN       b 1836?   marr 1854      James ARMSTRONG.
SARAH H
MARGARET H
AMELIA H
WILLIAM H
JOHN H                           marr 1878     Mary Ann BLEAKLEY.
ROBERT H        b1841      marr 1883     Emily DAVIS.

The second * Blakeley being the  son born 1832?

Is there a census around that time which would give more information about the Huggins families living on the Townland of Boley and Killyran?
I wonder who owned the Townland of Boley & Killyran at time of Valuation?Would be happy to receive any information that might give more details about above mentioned Huggins family.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sussex Lookup Requests / SIR THOS STRICKLAND & LADY COVENTRY
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 08:07 BST (UK)  »
This is a mystery I`ve been trying to solve for most of my married life, which is over 40 years. My husbands grandmother, Daisy Huggins nee Mathews, gave me an old page of writing paper, stuck on a page of a telephone directory for protection. Which I think was written by EMILY ALICE HUGGINS nee DAVIS ( 1851-1941) Which reads;

'What I remember of our ancestors and the only thing remaining in the family, two oil paintings ( oval ) now in the posscession of *Miss Ethel Bacchus of '' Braemar" Orleans Road, Norwood, London.
Lady COVENTRY married THOMAS STRICKLAND a surgeon by running away with him; he afterwards became Sir Thomas STRICKLAND; her family appear to have discarded her, and with her, her oval life size picture in oils and framed in gold; to which has been added the painting to match, of her husband.
The lady is in plain low neck green silk dark with hair dressed over rather high cushion. The gentleman light blue coat, ruffles, light curly wig and rather stout.'

About 7 years ago another note written by EMILY HUGGINS came to light on a piece of P. & O. Aust via The Cape Service, note paper, which read;

' Lady Coventry ran away with Sir Thomas Strickland surgeon won his title later all she got from the family was her own oval picture in oils he was painted later to match.
Grandma decended from her all in the female line.
5th or 6th generation.'

Emily Huggins must have seen the oil painting on one of her many visits back home to London at her cousin, * Ethel Bacchus home, which was distroyed during WW2. Hopefully Ethel took the paintings with her, to the country for saftey.

Emily Huggins carried on the name STRICKLAND as a second Christian name in her children as did her uncle JOHN DAVIS ( 1833-1895 marr JESSIS GORDON MATTEWS ( 1836-1913) They had 14 children in London between the years 1860-1878, so there must be lots of descendants somewhere?

From Emilies notes ( grandma decended from her all in the female line) I think she means the DAVIS side of the family?

Recites covenant to a levy a fine, i October 1794, Benjamin VERE, of Chichester, and MARY, his wife to GEORGE SEDGWICK WILMOT, of Chichester, gent..................

Two generations fron EM to grandmother EMILY VERE, 4 generations to MARY SANDEN all down the female line, but then you could also go down the THOMPSON female line. I need to go to the 5th or 6th generation to find Sir Thomas STRICKLAND & LADY COVENTRY, which has to be prior to MARY THOMPSON`s  birth in 1764, in the CHICHESTER area.

Would love to hear from anyone who can help?

Thankyou for taking the time to read this.

Cavan / BLEAKLEY HUGGINS Killashandra
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 10:15 BST (UK)  »
Love to discover date of birth and family of ROBERT HUGGINS born March 1841? 18 Miles from Belfast, County Tyrone. Don`t know if 18 miles is in Tyrone? Griffith Lodge.
Roberts parents were BLEAKLEY/ BLAKELEY BERRY HUGGINS & ANN PRINGE.
Robert as a young child was sent to the West Indies for health reason, where he grew to adulthood and owned Sugar Plantations, but never forgave his parents for the childhood separation. Travelling the world he met his futher wife EMILY ALICE DAVIS ( 1851-1873) in South AFRICA, returning to England were they were married 12 JULY 1883 at St Michaels, Stockwell, Co Surry, London.
Robert (42)and Emily immigrated to Australia where their 5 children were born. Considering Robert wouldn`t allow any contact with his family it`s strange that he called his eldest son BLEAKLEY BERRY HUGGINS born 1883 AUST.

How does all this tie up with KILLASHANDRA. The HUGGINS, BLEAKLEYS & GRIFFITH families were all related and a lot of Irish from County Cavan worked on the plantations in the West Indies including Robert`s brother JOHN HUGGINS who married 2 Nov 1878, MARY ANN BLEAKLEY born 21-2-1858 Co Cavan( parents WILLIAM BLEAKLEY (1822-1879 & RACHAEL ARNOLD died 1881, C. Cavan).

Roberts (Died 24 May 1900 Aust) wife wrote 19 Apr 1939.
''Mrs WIGZELL living the Spit, home broken up, son left GRIFFITH family, related to Huggins through the grandmothers being sisters, Griffith Lodge being the home of the Huggins`s''

WILLIAM BLEAKLEY( Born 7 Jan 1773,  1841 census , died 27 Sept 1850) marr 1817 ISABELLA HUGGINS ( Died 19 April 1862 85 Yrs) Their daug JANE marr THOMAS GRIFFITH, 1842 KILLASHANDRA. Don`t know how that ties up with the grandmothers being sister because I haven`t gone back far enough with the Huggins family.

What I`m leading up to, is the where abouts of GRIFFITH LODGE as it`s mentioned as the home of the HUGGINS family.

Received an email from Alison Causton in 2005 where she gave a reference from the Public Records Office of Northern Island in Belfast
''D.980/20/2: NOV 1851; Blakeley HUGGINS, Kildallen, Co Cavan & David GRIFFITH, Lodge, Co Cavan; Copy Conveyance, Mulmagolan, Co. Cavan."
In Griffith Valuations 1848-1864 BLAKELEY HUGGINS has Townland at Boley and Killyran, Parish of Templeport, Co Cavan.

DOROTHEA GRIFFITH wife of DAVID and Thomas Griffith give their address as GRIFFITH LODGE,  owning 103/109 acres, GENUKI 1876 Land Owners Cavan.

Think these are names of the children of Blakeley Berry HUGGINS & ANN PRINGLE?

ROBERT born March 1841 Marr EMILY ALICE DAVIS 12 JULY 1883.
