Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Translation of Latin will/probate
« on: Saturday 17 February 24 18:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at this probate from 1686, Robert Adnam died intestate. There is also an inventory.

Any offers for a translation?

A start -
15 Sept 1686
- - Robert Adnam  of St MaryBourne in Coun' Southton (County of Southampton) of Winton - - William Adnam - - - - Abintestate son of Intestate - -
I'm mainly lost after that, other than the occasional word.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / UnIdentIfIed close DNA match
« on: Sunday 28 January 24 05:52 GMT (UK)  »
Long time since I have posted here!

My 2 paternal cousins and I have found an unexpected ½ sibling/cousin, X, whose father is unknown as he was adopted. His son Y, an unexpected nephew or 1st cousin once removed has had DNA testing.

X is not my cousin, appears to be ½ sibling of one of my 2 cousins, from DNA matching to Y.

What is the likelihood of me and Y sharing 26 cMs/28cMs respectively with a match, but my cousins sharing none?

I'm trying to get my head around this, there would be no other apparent parentage for X.

Sussex / Will reading
« on: Tuesday 27 June 23 16:28 BST (UK)  »
This is an extract from the Will of Ann Barker, widow of Broadwater from 1586.

Can anybody decipher the surname of 'my brother Robert ?'

As there are no marriages recorded in Broadwater at the appropriate time, this could be very valuable information.

Son William Barker was baptised in 1566, so would have been c 20 at the time, though his 2 sisters, mentioned in the Will, were older.

Thanks in advance, Margaret

Sussex / Oliver Olliver family of Sussex
« on: Sunday 18 June 23 16:25 BST (UK)  »
Can anybody help me?

I have long thought that Elizabeth Oliver/Olliver, who married John Barker 1739 in Amberley, Sussex might have been daughter of Clement Oliver/Olliver and Margaret Swift, baptised 19 Apr 1719, Goring, Sussex.

Ancestry have recently added West Sussex Wills to their database, and it would seem that I am wrong (along with a lot of other Ancestry trees).

In his Will proved 1757 he mentions his wife Mary, sons John, Clement, Thomas, William and Edward, also a daughter Elizabeth Fields, married to Thomas Fields and a grandaughter, Elizabeth Chapman.
I think that Clement may have married a Mary Church in Dec 1751 (Margaret died in 1737).

So 3 questions really
1) I am unable to find the marriage of Elizabeth and Thomas

2) Any alternatives for parentage of 'my' Elizabeth, married to John Barker. At marriage - 29 Jul 1739 - John Barker of Broadwater, Elizabeth Oliver of Arundel?

3) Who was Elizabeth Chapman?

Wills often paint a different picture!

Lancashire / Greenfield, Lancashire - Chew Brook
« on: Thursday 03 November 22 10:05 GMT (UK)  »
My Steer ancestors lived in Saddleworth area - Diggle, Dobcross, Waterhead, Strinesdale.

I have been alerted to some postcards showing Steer's Nook Bridge, Greenfield, near to St Mary's Church (possibly where Waterside crosses Chew Brook).

Has anybody any knowledge of this bridge, and how it came to be named Steer's Nook?

I don't think there is a connection, but there maybe.

Thank you in advance

Surrey / Ann Maria Sanders aka Tyllier
« on: Friday 12 August 22 07:38 BST (UK)  »
A conundrum.

Melancthon Dolley bachelor married Ann Maria Sanders spinster, on 13 Aug 1832 , All Saints', Fulham.

Melancthon was from Wimbledon, Surrey, which is where the couple settled and had children.

5 children were born after registrations began, MMN recorded as Tyllier/Tillier.

Has anybody got any ideas as to the name change?

Regards Margaret

Lancashire / Brown family of Warrington, 18C
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 15:59 BST (UK)  »
John Brown married Phebe Cotton in Warrington in 1779. They had several children baptised in Warrington between 1780 - 1789, corresponding to the children's names given below, father a fishmonger.

From Lancashire, England, Quarter Session Records and Petitions, 1648-1908 -
John Brown, Phebe his wife, and Nancy, Peter, John, Phebe and Alice their children, chargeable to Warrington, have lately come to inhabit Warrington .... their legal settlement is in Mickle Trafford, Cheshire.
Conveyed to Mickle Trafford 2 Jun 1790.

John thought to have been born in Warrington c 1759, son of Peter and Jane, buried Warrington 17 Feb 1793, Fishmonger (as at children's baptisms), aged 33.

Why Mickle Trafford? I can find no other references to MT, Phebe married again, in Preston, but had returned to Warrington by 1798 and died there.

The children also appear to have stayed in Warrington.

What is likely to be the reason for this?

Kent Lookup Requests / Richard Odden, baptised Jun 1747, Milton next Gravesend
« on: Friday 18 February 22 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the baptism of Richard Odden, said to be 28 Jun 1747, Milton next Gravesend, father James (familysearch).

I have found records at Medway City Ark for Milton, but Richard Odden does not appear in them on this date.

https://cityark.medway.gov.uk/Details/archive/110006827

Any ideas where this record would be? The ones I have downloaded don't appear to be Bishop's Transcripts, are these available anywhere and to be the likely source?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Kirkburton baptism 1718
« on: Tuesday 23 November 21 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher the attached record, please?

Very poor quality, transcribed as 'Ann daughter of John Robuck, baptised 22 May 1718, Kirkburton'.

There is something written after John's name, indicating his abode, but I can't make it out - [something East?].

And I am not sure that it says 'Ann', either.
