Family History Beginners Board / Would you order a marriage cert...?

Searching for the marriage of John THOMAS and Elizabeth Ann EDWARDS.

Would you order a marriage cert... if it was the only option with the right names in the right place (Neath, Glamorgan) in the right timeframe (1875-91)?

I've found a picture of a grave at Sion Chapel, Aberdulais, which going by the transcription sounds as if it may contain one set of my great-great grandparents. However, as their names are Daniel and Margaret JONES, I am unsure as to how I would determine whether they are 'mine'.

Any thoughts gratefully accepted - the transcription can be viewed at http://liber-mortuorum.com/aberdulais/sion/index.html#092 - the grave in question is that of William Jones, son of Daniel and Margaret who died 23 May 1882.

The sticking point is this - I know that my ancestors had a son called William, who was 8 on the 1881 census and doesn't feature on the 1891 with his parents (tho of course he may have married or been working elsewhere or both!), but the William referred to on this grave is transcribed as having died aged 3 - am I silly for hoping it actually says 8? Don't know if I am seeing what I want to see on the photo lol

EDIT - After a search of FreeBMD for William Jones dying in Neath in 1882 +/- 1, I've found an 8yr old but no 3yr olds. Obviously I realise he may not have died in Neath but I know that my Welsh lines did not (so far) go wandering all over the country like my English lines did!

Just wanted people's opinions on Genes Reunited as to how good an alternative it is to A******y/FindMyPast these days... I started off on GR years ago, then moved up to A******y/FindMyPast. At the moment, financial circumstances dictate I have to seriously consider it again.

Hi all, just wondering if anyone could decipher/confirm the below birthplaces for me?

I think one says Morris Conway, Drumcree, Armagh, and the other is Sarah Conway (maiden name Roch). I can't quite make out the town/village name but I think the county is Antrim.


EDIT - Done some googling - according to Wikipedia there's a parish called Killead in Antrim - could that be it or am I just seeing what I think fits?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage of Thomas Green and Sarah Pike *COMPLETED*

Attached is a scan of part of the marriage certificate of two of my 3x great grandparents, Thomas Green and Sarah Pike. I am finding it hard to decipher Thomas's father's name, in the hope that he may have been living with his parents on the 1841 Census (although as he was aged 29 at the marriage in 1845 I realise that he may not have been with his parents then).

Any help gratefully accepted.

This is the ScotlandsPeople entry for the birth of one of my gt gt grandfathers, Robert Conway. Would I be correct in thinking that the entry reads that he was born on the 19th of September in Dumbrock, Strathblane?

Family History Beginners Board / How to decide which marriage is 'mine'?

I'm trying to trace back from my maternal grandmother's mother, Miriam Thomas (nee Jones), b 12 Oct 1888 in Neath, Glamorgan. I received her birth certificate this week, giving her parents as Daniel and Margaret (nee Thomas - oh fun!).

1901 has Daniel as a Widower, born in about 1844 in Neath, with daughters Elizabeth Ann (23), Mary (20), Catherine (16), Miriam (12) and son David J aged 9 in Neath.

1891 has Daniel (48) and Margaret (born about 1847 in Llandybie, Carmarthenshire) with Elizabeth (16), Mary (10), Catherine (6) and Miriam (2) in Neath.

1881 has Daniel (34), Margaret (30), a son William (aged 8), Elizabeth (6), a 3yo son Thomas and a 9 month old Mary in Neath.

I think I have found Daniel pre-marriage aged 28 on the 1871 in Neath - staying with him are Jane, his 22yo sister, and her husband William Morris. This leads me to believe that Daniel and Margaret married between 1871-1873.

As luck would have it, there are only 2 Daniel Jones-Margaret Thomas marriages in that time period on FreeBMD: Mar 1871 - Llandovery;  Jun 1872 - Neath; Mar 1877 - Llanelly; and Jun 1878 - Llandilofawr. EDIT ref. reply by CaroleW below

Llandybie, Margaret's birthplace, was in the Llandilofawr district, but all 4 districts are quite near each other, so I'm not sure which to go for.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Is this the marriage of my 5x Great Grandparents?

Whilst browsing Ancestry a couple of nights ago, I found an intriguing entry in their Parish Registers for East Rounton - a marriage of Joseph Jefferson (of Kirby Sigston) and Rachel Tompson of East Rounton on February 12, 1782.

The earliest sourced record in my tree is that of the 1841 Census for my 4x great grandfather John Jefferson in Bulmer, Yorkshire, with a birth year of 1801. John was living with his wife Rachel, their children John aged 13 and Joseph aged 11, and there were some people with the surname Crow listed with them. There is a Dec 1840 marriage on FreeBMD for George Jefferson-Isabella Crow in Easingwold district, but obviously the 1841 census doesn't give relationships so I can't see if the Jeffersons and Crows on the census I found are in-laws.

I'm currently waiting for 3 certs to arrive so will have to leave it a while before I order the above; does anyone have any thoughts so far?

Family History Beginners Board / Finding missing children between censuses?

On the 1911 census for my 2 x gt grandmother Harriett Jefferson it shows she had 10 children in all, 3 of whom were dead by the time the census was taken.

I was only aware that she and her late husband John had married in Worksop in 1877 and had 5 children:
- Susannah Rachel 1878  – 1881;
- Marguerite Annie 1879 – ????;
- John Goodwyn 1881 – 1950;
- Janet Bates 1891 – ????; and
- Hugh Derek 1898 – ????.

Marguerite married a Frederick Crump in 1899 and was with him in 1901 and 1911; John was my gt grandfather, was a Boarder in Hastings in 1901 and married my gt grandmother in 1902, appearing with her on the 1911; Janet and Hugh are still with their mother on the 1911.

The only other child I have found which may link to this family is that of a Dora Rachel Jefferson on the IGI (extracted, christened 4 Oct 1885, Beighton, Derbyshire), which would fit right in the middle of the 10 year gap between John and Janet.

 The IGI gives her parents' names as John and Harriet; I think she was one of 'mine' due to the link with the Susannah Rachel already mentioned; both the girls could have been named after their paternal grandmother (John's parents were Joseph and Rachel).

The location of Dora's christening throws me a little, though - in 1881 the Jeffersons were in Worksop, Notts; and by 1891 they'd moved to Luton, Beds - though checking Google Maps reveals that Beighton is 11.5 miles NW of Worksop, so it's not inconceivable that she could be mine.

However - there are no Dora Rachel Jefferson births on FreeBMD within the relevant time period. The closest I could find was a Dora Frances, registered in Eccleshall Bierlow district in June 1883. Looking at deaths in the same time period, I believe the same Dora Frances Jefferson died aged 5 in Eccleshall Bierlow in March 1889. Which still leaves me to wonder, where is Dora Rachel? And where are my other live (in 1911) Jeffersons?

Any help appreciated

PS - I know we can't do 1911 lookups here but if anyone has any ideas, let me know and I'll check them as soon as I am able.
