Clackmannanshire / Robert Munro, Sheriff Officer 'Foreign'
« on: Sunday 30 November 14 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
I’ve been searching for some time for information about a Robert Munro, wrongly transcribed as Morro in Scotland’s People.

Robert Munro married Catherine Donaldson in Alloa in 1817.

In the 1841 census Robert Munro and family, minus wife Catherine, are recorded living in the New Entry, Alloa.   Looking through old maps of Alloa, I have been unable to pinpoint the exact location of this place.

Again, in the 1841 census, Robert Munro’s occupation was a Sheriff Officer.  Curiously, his place of birth is recorded as ‘Foreign’ so this presents another bigger challenge.

I can’t find him in the 1851 census so will have to presume he died or moved elsewhere but would be grateful for any suggestions.

Jim

Kinross-shire / Benarty Bridge, Cleish
« on: Saturday 04 January 14 12:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to pinpoint the location of Benarty Bridge, Cleish, mentioned in a death certificate from the 1930's.   Does, or did this bridge span a burn/river, railway, or indeed anything?

Thanks
Jim

Lanarkshire / Mining accidental death.
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 17:00 GMT (UK)  »
According to a brief Procurator Fiscal’s report, contained in a RCE, Thomas McEwan, a coalminer, died from ‘injuries sustained by being crushed between a hutch of a train of 6 loaded hutches and a wooden crown supporting the roof.’  This was in March 1921.

I’ve been searching for more information regarding this but the Scottish Mining website fatal accidents section for that year contains only his name and a reference to NK Coatbridge area.     Also, what is the abbreviation NK?

Thanks.

Lanarkshire / James McIlhutton McEwan, where did he go?
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 19:58 BST (UK)  »
Apart from his birth certificate, I have been unable to trace James McIlhutton McEwan who was born in Coatbridge in 1898.  His parents were Patrick McEwan and Mary Ann Stanfield.

Even a search at the Mitchell Library drew a blank – no marriage or death certificate that I could find.  There are a few WW1 Service Record deaths for James McEwan but these do not show the names of the person’s parents.

Any suggestions, anyone?

Lanarkshire / Hairmyres Colony
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 17:41 BST (UK)  »
Brothers John and James McEwan were born 1889 and 1898/9 respectively.   John, a widower, married Elizabeth Hilson in Glasgow  in 1937.  A witness, who I suspect was John’s brother, James gave his address as Hairmyres Colony, East Kilbride.  I don’t know if this meant he was a patient there or lived in residential accommodation as an employee.  Which could or would it have been?

I have no other information regarding James.

Lanarkshire / Glasgow Royal Infirmary death
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 18:51 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Stanfield McEwan died of a broken back and cardiac failure.  He died in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1921.  I don’t know how he came by his injuries but presume they were caused by some sort of accident.   He was a coalminer but I have been unable so far to ascertain if his injuries were caused in a coalmining accident.

Any suggestions how to proceed?

Lanarkshire / Pottery Village. Where was it situated?
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 16:22 GMT (UK)  »
Quite a few of my ancestors were born in Pottery Village in the 1840's and 50's.  Where exactly was it?  I presume the village consisted of miners' rows.

Thanks.

Antrim / Edward McCormick son of John McCormick and Mary McKinlay
« on: Monday 20 December 10 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
According to the 1855 Scottish birth certificate of Catherine McCormick, her parents, Edward McCormick and Jane McCormick married in 1841, in Barnish, Culfeightrin, Ballycastle, Antrim.
Edward was born in Bentra, Templecorran, Larne.  Jane McCormick’s  birthplace is proving more difficult to decipher.   It appears to be Marc?????n, Antrim.
Edward and Jane had several children before moving to Scotland.
Edward’s parents were John McCormick and Mary McKinlay.
