Offaly (Kings) / John Reed & Hester McKeon
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 14:12 BST (UK)  »
Seeking information on John Reed (Reid) and Hester McKeon of Birr, Offaly, Ireland.  John Reed was born ca. 1770.  They had two known children, John Reid (1797-1872) and Edward Reid b. ca. 1806.  Their son John Reid (my ancestor) was a Sergeant of the 48th Regiment of Foot and saw service in Ireland, Isle of Man, England, Australia and India.  Any information on John Reed and Hester McKeon would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking information on Sergeant John Reid of the 48th Foot, born in Birr, King's County, Ireland, in April 1798, died 7 May 1872 at 7 Park Hills Steet, Bury, Lancashire, England.  He married Mary Ann Parkes (1807-1865), an Australian convict, on 24 December 1827 at Bellary Chapelry, Kamataka, India.  He was released from military service in 1838 for reasons of health.  In 1841 he was living at Ramsey, Isle of Man, then moved to Manchester and finally to Bury, Lancashire, where he operated a store and shoe shop.  While living at Tottington, Lancashire, his daughter Henrietta Mona Reid (1848-1932) met Thomas Schofield (1826-1898), Master Dyer at the Manchester Woolen Mills, and later migrated with the Schofield family to America, settling in Utah.  Henrietta Mona became a polygamous (Mormon) wife of Thomas Schofield.  Thomas and Henrietta Mona were my great-grandparents.  Any information welcomed, but especially interested in parents of John Reid.(photo of John Reid)

John Reid b. 1798 Birr, Offaly (Kings), Ireland, was a Sergeant in the 48th Regiment of Foot.  He served in Ireland, England, Isle of Man, Australia, and India.  He settled in Bury, Lancashire, after his medical discharge and started a shop.  He died there in 1872.  I wonder if he is not related in some fashion to William Reid (Read).

« on: Friday 02 April 10 15:17 BST (UK)  »
I have a good deal of information on Sergeant John Reid, b. 1798 Birr, Offaly, Ireland, d. 1872 Bury, Lancashire, England.  He was a soldier in the 48th Regiment of Foot, and served in Ireland, Isle of Man, England, Australia, and India.  He married Mary Ann Parkes who was from an Australian convict family.  I have a photograph of Sgt. Reid, but I have been unable to discover his parentage.  I would appreciate any information from anyone connected to the Reid or Parkes families.
