Roxburghshire / Joseph Davidson of Old Southdean
« on: Thursday 02 April 20 11:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I'm looking for info on the above, who I believe died in 1774. No trace of him in the usual places (Scotlands People, www.bordersfhs.org.uk etc). He was a close relative of:
  • Christian Davidson, bap. Carham (over the border) in 1731. Supposedly his sister.
  • Rev Isaac Davidson, minister of Sorbie, Wigtownshire, supposedly born in London so maybe a son or nephew of Joseph

Possible baptism in Carham in 1746 (he would be a bit young) and possible marriage to a Margt Pringle at Yeholm 1746.

Any info appreciated as I can't quite fit this puzzle together.

Lanarkshire / Three Mile House
« on: Wednesday 17 October 18 09:52 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me out. I've been looking at various family documents from the 1890s through to the 1920s on which family members have listed their address as Three Mile House, or Three Mile Cottage, Cardonald.
A bit of a search shows that it was situated equidistant between Paisley and Glasgow, but what was it - an area? a pub? a building? It seems a bit vague for an address.

thanks for any help!

Scotland / China manufacturer in Scotland circa 1800
« on: Wednesday 19 September 18 15:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm looking into the father of an ancestor. According to her death certificate in 1859, my ancestor's father was James Anderson, china manufacturer. She was in her 70s at this point so I assume her father was long dead and would have been active around the turn of the 19th C.

Anyone know where china was manufactured in Scotland in around 1800? I didn't know there was any china produced there, to be honest!

I think she was born in Haddington in the 1780s. This could be wrong, if so it's still likely to be the lowlands region. Her son was born in Alloa, Clacks, and lived in Edinburgh and Fife.

thanks in advance!

Hi there
I've managed to trace a family member back and think I've found some of his family living in Dykesfield and surrounding villages. Trouble is, I can't seem to find any births registered for any of these villages.

Firstly, where would the nearest parish church be? Dykesfield looks pretty tiny so may not have had its own church.

Secondly, does anyone know whether the lack of records might be to do with records being lost / limited / damaged? Or might they have been part of a non conformist church? It seems odd that while I can find him and what appear to be his family members in the census records, there don't seem to be any birth records at all for the Black family.

The person I'm looking for is William Black born around 1809 in Burgh [by Sands].  I think his father is Robert Black born Rockcliff in 1771 and farming in Dykesfield.

I'm not familiar with this area at all so would appreciate any tips
thanks!

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Look up request - parents of Ann Goat, ?North Walsingham
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I'm looking for the parents of an Ann (aka Anne) Goat born in Norfolk in 1712. It's quite an unusual name so that might help. Sometimes it has been transcribed as Goate or Coate.

Her son's memoir (written in Scotland much later - 1820) lists her as being from North Walsingham not far from Lingwood. I can't find a North Walsingham anywhere so perhaps he mis-remembered North Walsham?

She married John Church in (I think) St Michael at Plea Church, Norwich, Norfolk on 26/03/1730. He was a farmer at Lingwood and she came with a decent dowry, so I'm guessing a farming family too. They moved to Scotland in the 1760s.

Appreciate any ideas as I don't know Norfolk at all.

many thanks

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Lookup Eleanor Macdonald in Wooler
« on: Tuesday 09 August 16 21:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I'm trying to trace the family of an ancestor born in Wooler in 1752.

The name on her birth /christening record is Eleanor MackDonald, dau of Duncan Mack Donald and Christiana.

Her name is recorded on her marriage record in Wooler in 1774 as Elender McDonald, so I've tried all the various spellings of both names. MacDonald with an 'a' was used as a middle name in the family for several generations afterwards as there is some story of a link to Flora MacDonald but I'm very sceptical.

There is no other link to Wooler and I don't know this area at all.

??? ??? I can't find any trace of her family apart from that so would really appreciate any tips / hints.

thanks!

Hi all
Trying to track an ancestor in East Lothian and would appreciate any help or suggestions as I'm not familiar with this area.

I'm looking for a Jane Brodie born in Garvald in 1777 or 1778. She married James Church, a farmer in Canonbie, Dumfries-shire. She's listed in the 1851 census and a marriage notice as being called Jane, but the only possible births I can find are a Jean Brodie and a Janet Brodie. Jean and Janet were both born to a Alexander Brodie and Margaret Ferme or Fram.

If it's the right couple, they married in Oldhamstocks in 1757 and then went on to have 12 children (gulp) over the next 20 years. The first 4 were born in Oldhamstocks and the rest in Garvald.

1 13/09/1758   BRODIE   JOHN   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FERME    M   OLDHAMSTOCKS
2 17/02/1760   BRODIE   MARY   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FERME    F   OLDHAMSTOCKS
3 12/06/1761   BRODIE   ELISABETH   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FERME    F   OLDHAMSTOCKS
4 26/04/1763   BRODIE   JANET   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FERME    F   OLDHAMSTOCKS
5 08/01/1765   BRODIE   MARY   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    F   GARVALD
6 08/10/1766   BRODIE   ELIZABETH   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    F   GARVALD
7 05/12/1768   BRODIE   ISABLE   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    F   GARVALD
8 22/09/1770   BRODIE   ALEXANDER   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM F   M   GARVALD
9   07/01/1772   BRODIE   JAMES   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    M   GARVALD
10 30/08/1773   BRODIE   MARGARET   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    F   GARVALD
11   28/07/1775   BRODIE   JANET   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FRAM    F   GARVALD
12 05/09/1777   BRODIE   JEAN   ALEXANDER BRODIE/MARGARET FARM    F   GARVALD

I've a few questions that I'd really love some help with as I don't know this part of Scotland at all and am drawing lots of blanks:

1. The Jean born in 1777 seems the most likely because of the dates but I didn't know that Jane was an abbreviation of Jean. She was listed as Jane in her marriage notices and census. Any thoughts on the Jean / Janet / Jane thing?

2. There are inconsistencies in the spelling of Ferme / Fram so it is possible that these are two different couples. Has anyone come across any Fermes or Frams anywhere else in the Oldhamstocks area?

3. Jean and Janet's baptism records state that Alexander Brodie was tenant at Bara. Can't find anything at all relating to him there. Am assuming that the family moved from Oldhamstocks to Bara sometime in 1763 and 1764.

4. The 2 baptism records I've seen also say that John Brodies elder and younger were witnesses. These could be Alexander's father and brother or eldest son. Can't find any trace of them either.

Sorry for the very long post but thanks for reading!!

Clackmannanshire / John Cochrane and Catherine Anderson in Alloa, c1800
« on: Friday 19 September 14 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I'm trying to track down the parents of my ancestor James Cochrane, who was supposedly born in Alloa in 1805. He was a minister and his Fasti Ecclesiae entry states he was born there to John Cochrane and Catherine Anderson.
But I just can't find any trace of his birth or of either of his parents. We don't have any other connections with Alloa and James spent his adult life in Edinburgh and then at Cupar Parish Church in Fife. His wife was from Canonbie in Dumfries-shire.

Possible clues:
+ Jame's death cert said his father was an army officer.
+ Naming conventions would suggest his father or perhaps a brother was called Henry - perhaps Henry John or John Henry (James' eldest son was Henry John and there are no Henrys on the mother's side)
+ A possible connection with India as James' younger son joined the Bengal civil service and James' in-laws had connections with India

After several years of searching, I've still found nothing so would really appreciate any help or suggestions.

My most recent searches have looked at schools which James might have attended before going to Edinburgh Uni (1821-1826).
Was there ever a military / militia base near Alloa?

thanks

Clackmannanshire / Looking for Cochranes in Alloa
« on: Wednesday 15 August 12 12:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi there
I'm trying to trace a John Cochrane and his wife Catherine Anderson. They had a son James born in Alloa in 1805 but I can find no trace of them in Alloa or Clackmannanshire on Scotland's People or anywhere else.  On their son's DC it said that his father John was an army officer but I've not found any trace of him in the Army either.

Appreciate any help at all!
