London and Middlesex / Monk family of St John's Westminster early ninteenth century.
« on: Monday 01 November 10 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone help with the baptism of MARK MONK abt 1812 who gives his place of birth as St John's Westminster? He had a brother, Abraham who was probably older - his age varies in censuses.

In the 1841 census there is an Octavius Monk working in the same household as Mark so he may be another brother, born abt 1821, in which case, looking at his name, there may be five more Monks. Thanks.

Can anyone help please with the two marriages of Caroline, d of Francis (1790 - 1850) and Mary Ann nee Raper (1799 - 1868) of Hull.

1. to ......? Wood, son Joseph born 1855 Sculcoates district and in 1861 he and his mother, a widow, are at 37 St John's Place, Albert Street, Sutton.

2. to James Hindley, daughter Julia Ann born 1865/6 Hull (but I can't find her birth registration) and son, James William born 1869.  James Hindley died in 1882. I wonder if they did actually marry as I cannot find anything much about James.

I have all the census entries for her and details of her and her Cousins family except for Julia Ann's birth reg and JA's whereabouts in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1911 she is with her brother, single, and a domestic servant  so perhaps was "renamed" by her employers whilst working? Thanks.

Lancashire / James Hindley born abt 1820, Liverpool
« on: Monday 01 November 10 11:23 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone got a missing JAMES HINDLEY (abt 1820 - 1882) in their Lancashire tree, please?

He is in the Hull area by 1865/6 when his daughter Julia Ann was born (can't find a birth reg for her). I cannot find a marriage to a Caroline Wood nee Cousins (1830 - 1900), born Hull, who was the mother. A son, James William was born in 1869 and the family are on the 1871 and 1881 census in the Hull area. James was a painter's labourer born in Liverpool. I cannot find any mention of James before this, having used a variety of spellings, and wonder if he was already married to someone else and the couple just lived together. Thanks!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / FRANCIS ASHTON of Hull
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
Any help with finding the following would be greatly appreciated.

1. Marriage of FRANCIS ASHTON and ROSANNA/ROSE HANNAH ? - only known children were Rosanna bur 1803 Drypool, Charles bpt 1805 and Francis bpt 1807 both at Holy Trinity, Hull.
Rosanna presumably died 1807 - 1813 as Francis remarried Ann Herbert, widow of Thomas Tye
on 5 Dec 1813 at Sculcoates.

2. Marriage of the above FRANCIS to REBECCA  ? (born abt 1796 Grimsby) - only known child William bpt 1825 Sutton in Holderness.

Francis appears on the 1841 census with his family in Witham, Sutton as a coal porter aged 75
born Yorkshire (but Rebecca also appears as born in Yorkshire) and he died in 1843.

Neither marriage took place in Lincolnshire or Nottinghamshire. I have searched the indexed marriages at Beverley and am now working my way through parishes near to Hull.

    Thank you.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Hindley/Cousens/Wood
« on: Saturday 09 January 10 15:34 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone researching the family of James Hindley born about 1820 in Liverpool but living in the Hull area by at least by 1865 and in Morton's Place, Machett Street 1869 - 1871 as a painter/labourer?

He had two children, Julia Ann born 1866 and James William born 1869. Julia Ann appears in the 1871 census but I have not traced her further under Julia or Ann or found a marriage or death for her. The children's mother was Caroline Cousens (sic) 1830 - 1900, d of Francis and Mary Ann nee Raper. I cannot find a marriage for her and James Hindley although I have tried alternative spellings and surnames. Caroline was married first to a ......? Wood and had a son, Joe 1855 - 1894 who was shown as a cripple on the census. By 1861, Carolie was a widow living with Joe in Albert St. St John's Place, Sutton.

Can anyone look up the baptism of Joe Wood please and find out the name of his father? In 1861 he was in St Mark's parish. Thanks.

Stanley Ashton marr 1945 Cheshire to Martha Annie Chesters, when he was 21 and in the Royal Navy.

Gave address as Warrington but home was 32, Grange St. Hull. My neice is his grandaughter but a newcomer to genealogy and lives in Australia. Cannot access RN records as she is not next of kin.

Have found a death which might be his, which gives DOB as 22 Sep 1923. The only birth reg that fits is for Dec qtr 1923 Sculcoates to an Ashton and mother's maiden name Hindley BUT have found no marr between the two. Family lore says he was illegitimate.

Can anyone find who lived at 32, Grange St. Hull during the war years please? Thanks.

« on: Tuesday 25 August 09 09:19 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find the marriage of CHARLES WALKER born 1787/1791 Odd Rhode/Smallwood area, bricklayer, and MARY ?......?born 1788/1793 also Smallwood (Smallwood census ages vary).

Charles' first wife was buried 21 Dec 1825 but the above couple had a son, Frederick Felix bpt 15 Jul 1838 at Astbury, so perhaps they married just before this and Mary had a baby late in life.

Warwickshire / Warwickshire/Birmingham Accent and Place Names

My ancestor, JOHN WATKIN appears in the 1841 and 1851 census in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

His wife, ELIZABETH is shown as born 1766-1771 in Warwicks (age 83 in 1851 and 70 in 1841)  - the place is fairly clear as BIDETT. Can anyone work out where this might be, please?

John came from Leicestershire and had a son baptised abt 1822 in Nuneaton, but Elizabeth's age does not fit - she would be too old to be the mother.

There is a marriage of a John Watkin to an Elizabeth Bloomer in St Philip's Birmingham on 14 Jan 1828 on the I.G.I.
