Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / The Beck Family St Helier
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I am putting together the Family Tree of my late sister-in-law for her children etc.

One of Brenda’s 2xGgmothers was Jane Moignard born 1830 in St Helier, Jersey.  With access to Jersey records her pedigree seems reasonably straightforward.  However, her husband is a different matter; he was William Richard Beck born probably at the very end of 1830 in St Helier.  His baptism took place on 2 January 1831, as the son of William Beck and Mary Moles.  Problems arise with this couple as I can find no record after the baptism of their second son John James in 1833, again at St Helier.  All I have to trace them is the detail of their marriage on 18 July 1829 at St Helier.  This document says that William Beck was of the Parish of Charge (Chard?) in the County of Somerset and Mary Moles was of the Parish.

There is a possible baptism of a William Beck at Chard in 1811 but, until I have more information on his later life I am loathe to go forward on this.

By 1861 William Richard Beck (working as a Shoe Maker) was living in Walworth, Lambeth, Surrey.  Jane was there plus four children, the eldest of whom was Mary Jane born 6 Dec 1853 in St Helier.

I cannot find anything of either couple on the 1841 nor the 1851 Census.

Please can anybody help with any sort of information, that could assist towards tracing the elusive William Beck and Mary Moles.  Also anything on their son before he and his family left Jersey.

Thanks in advance,
Tony

Bedfordshire / Samuel Smith c 1808
« on: Tuesday 31 January 17 15:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping a friend from Adelaide, South Australia research his Family Tree.

What I know.
Some strands have been in South Australia for over 150 years.  Variously they originate from Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and London.  However, the particular family I am interested in came from the Beds/Northants border area.  This is them arriving in SA,

SMITH Samuel, Fanny LOVELL, Wm, Eliz, Sarah, Kerrenhappuch, Lydia arrived in SA 1849-05-18 aboard Susannah from London 49-01-20 via Plymouth

Fanny Lovell’s heritage has been reasonably easy to research, as were the children but, Samuel Smith is another story.  The only record I have on him is the 1841 Census, when the family was living in Bozeat, Northants.

Census ref
H107, Piece 802, Book 1, Folio 14, Page 20.

Samuel Smith   Aged 30   Publican   Not born in County
Fanny      Aged 25         Not born in County
William      Aged 5         Not born in County
Elizabeth      Aged 3         Not born in County
Sarah         Aged 1         Born in County

My suspicion is that Samuel, was born (possibly at Knotting) the son of u/k Smith and Keren-Happuch.  Her maiden name (if my research is correct) was Jones born 1766 at Bletsoe, Beds.  The reason for uncertainty over Samuel’s father’s maiden name is the second marriage of Keren-Happuch (as Wildman) to Sn Smith at Thurleigh on 9 June 1796.  Detail as found on FreeReg.  What does the Sn stand do for, Simon or something completely different?

So my questions are,

Can anyone give me the actual name of the Groom at the marriage in 1796?

Secondly, can the baptism of Samuel Smith be found with his parentage, based on the information as found?

I am helping a distant relative from Australia research his Family Ancestry.

What I know.

Robert Brown married Sarah Simpkin (of Chelsea) on 22 August 1796, at St Margaret, Westminster, Middlesex.  I have found both in 1841 and 1851 living in Lambeth Surrey.  Census detail can be found at
1841 HO 107 Piece 1058 Book 9
1851 HO 107 Piece 1572 Folio 69 Page 30
In both returns Robert Brown was described as an Engineer.  In 1851 he was stated to have been born in Hull, Yorkshire aged 79.
With this I have found a baptism for a Robert Brown on 24 June 1772 at Holy Trinity, Hull, as found on Family Search.  Unfortunately no mother’s name is given.  There are two possible brothers also baptised at Holy Trinity, John (17/2/74) and Thomas (3/11/75) beyond that I am at a loss.

Can anyone help me with Robert’s mother’s name and any possible marriage between her and Robert Brown, senior.

For information Robert and Sarah Brown had (at least) one daughter Jane Wilber Brown born 1810 at Southwark, Surrey who died in 1894, in Victoria, Australia.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / The Temple family of Alton
« on: Friday 26 December 14 09:46 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Temple Family of Sandwich in East Kent for a friend who lives in South Australia.  The scion of the Family was one Henry Temple, who married Jane Hills, in 1738, at St Clement’s Church, Sandwich.  He died in 1800 with his age given as 86.  Fortunately, he married by Licence and, the Allegation etc. had his Bondsman as George Temple a Woollen Factor of Alton, Hampshire.

Thus, I was able to find Henry’s baptism dated 14 November 1714 at Alton, the son of George and Anne Sparrowfield.  Moving on from there, I found the marriage of George and Anne dated 5 June 1712, at Alton.  Then I have the baptism of George Temple, dated 17 October 1683, the son of Henry and Elizabeth.  All the information in this paragraph has been found on Family Search.  I have not been able to confirm this data from any other source.

So my request is does anyone have access to the Alton Parish Registers, to be able to confirm the detail as above, and possibly find the Maiden Name of the Elizabeth who married Henry Temple some time prior to 1683?

For information, I live in Broadstairs about ten miles north of Sandwich.

Many thanks,
Tony  :) :

Suffolk / The family of Nathan Warner of Trimley St Martin
« on: Wednesday 12 February 14 22:02 GMT (UK)  »
Some background

Last year I met a couple (from Australia) at the Archives at Canterbury Cathedral.  They were researching their family from the Whitstable area.  Basically the hunt started at the marriage of John Nathaniel Warner to Eliza Jane Nicholls in 1886 at Blean Registry Office.  Copy to hand.  Although the name Warner is common in and around Whitstable, it turned out that John Nathaniel (according to the 1901 census) came from Ipswich in Suffolk.

As well as helping as helping them on the Nicholls Ancestry we have now turned to researching John Nathaniel Warner’s pedigree.  After various blind alleys we have reached the conclusion that John Nathaniel was baptised in Trimley St Martin and registered as Nathan Warner.  He was born on 13 December 1847 to Daniel Warner and Sarah formerly Wink; Daniel was a Labourer.

Thus far we believe the following to be Nathan’s family:-

Father – Daniel Warner born 18 December 1814 at Trimley St Martin
Mother – Sarah Wink born 22 March 1822 at Kirton
Married 14 October 1844 at Trimley St Martin (1)

Paternal grandfather – John Warner born 1781 Trimley St Mary
Paternal grandmother – Mary Harsum born 8 December 1778 Parham
Married 10 January 1808 Trimley St Martin

Maternal grandfather – James Wink born 28 August 1786 Falkenham (2)
Maternal grandmother – Elizabeth Taylor, probably born after 18 Jan 1793, place unknown. (2)
Married 18 January 1814 at Walton

(1) Marriage Certificate in hand so father’s names are known.
(2) From Family Trees, as found, however none are supported with any source information.
(3) The marriage detail from 1814 as transcribed has note with parents consent, thus it is likely that Elizabeth was not aged 21 at that time.

All the above information has been obtained online from transcriptions apart from the marriage as noted (1) and the birth as noted (2)

Having the paternal GPs birth details the GGPs names are known but until sources are confirmed I would not wish to proceed further.  Those names are John Warner and Jemima (Abbott?) Daniel Harsum and Sarah (Read?) ???

Thus, the questions are can any kind person confirm the details apart from note (1) and provide guidance on any further ancestry.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Australia / Anderson Family from Blean to Victoria
« on: Monday 16 December 13 15:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for actual burial details, to start with, of Frederick Percy ANDERSON; that is (hopefully) a headstone, plus any other family details.  He died, as a result of injuries received from an explosion in a Vulcaniser, on 25 January 1932. :( :(  It looks like he was buried at New Melbourne Cemetery on 27 January 1932.  Cannot find such in 2013.  As far as I can tell, his wife Mary Philomena (nee Conniff) died in 2005 aged about 102.  One son Kevin Vincent died in 1928 aged 3. :(  According to the D.C., there was another son, Bernard Frederick aged 6.

I am hoping that finding headstones etc. may lead to confirmation that the Anderson Family (of Blean, Kent) has survived in Australia.

What I know (please forgive the numbers, they are from my personal document The Descendants of Edward Sandy, born 1643 at St Dunstan, Canterbury):-

794. Susannah SANDY born 1867 at Blean.  Susannah married Thomas ANDERSON on 3 April 1893 at St Luke, Deptford.  For information Susannah (Susan in Australia) is the only sister of my grand-father Thomas.  :'(
Children from this marriage were

Ninth Generation

2107. i) Henrietta ANDERSON born 1894 at Gosterwood Street, Deptford, London.
2108. ii) Thomas John ANDERSON born 1897 at Blean.
2109. iii) Frederick Percy ANDERSON born 1903 at Blean.

Susannah and the three chidren Henrietta, Thomas John and Frederick Percy emigrated aboard the S.S. Makarini leaving London on 13 November and landing at Melbourne, Victoria on 27 December 1912. I have no knowledge on Susannah's husband Thomas Anderson. He was not on the Makarini's passenger list but having been in the Royal Navy he may well have worked his passage, in some way.

Thomas ANDERSON died 15 September 1929 aged 65
Susan ANDERSON died 11 May 1936

Both are buried at Burwood Cemetery together, with their son

Thomas John ANDERSON died 11 December 1964, with his wife
Mollie Rose (nee BARLOW) ANDERSON died 1 August 1991

The three children’s marriages and further information

Henrietta to Joseph GOFF  c1913 at Albert Park, Melbourne.  The couple had four children, Ellen Susan 1914, Joseph Thomas John 1915, Walter Frederick 1918 and Iris Lillian 1924 all from the Death Certificate of Joseph Goff who died in 1982.  He being cremated on  September 1982 at Springvale Botanical Cemetery.
as was Henrietta on 18 February 1988.
Note when married The Registration transcription has Herta not Henrietta.

Thomas John to Mollie Rose BARLOW c1931 at Newport, Melbourne.  The couple had one daughter Patricia Rosemary born c 1936.  This from TJA’s Death Certificate.  He died 11 December 1968 at Middle Park.

Fredrick Percy to Mary Philomena CONNIFF c1922 at Melbourne.  Mary Philomena died in 2005 at Melbourne.  Known children as above.

I hope I have covered everything.

Just to fly a kite on this thread, if anyone has information on any SANDY who left Kent to live in Australia at any time such a find would be wonderful.  :-* :'(

Any information and help will be greatly appreciated.  :)

Thank you,
Tony, son of a Sandy :) :)
P.S. I have a copy of Frederick Percy Anderson's Death Registration but am not sure if I can attached it to this posting, but will do if allowed.

Canada / The Brewer Family – New Brunswick
« on: Monday 14 May 12 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone fill in the gaps on the Brewer Family?  Mother, father with one son migrated to Canada in 1835, settled in Stanley, York, New Brunswick and had more children.

Sarah Amelia BARNES
born 1 March 1810, St Anne, Limehouse, Middlesex
Married on 13 June 1831 to
Daniel John BREWER at St Botolph without Aldgate, London.  No other information on Daniel John Brewer apart from a date of birth c1808 from Canadian census records.
Robert Daniel, first child born 1 December 1833 and baptised in Langham, Westminster.  Father noted as Jeweller.
William Henry second child baptised 8 March 1835 in Lambeth (nothing further known)

The next known sighting of the family is on the 1851 Census of Canada at Stanley, York, New Brunswick
Household – Date of entering the Colony June 1835
Daniel      43   English   Farmer
Sarah      40   English
Robert      17   English
Mary Anne   15   Native
Charles   13   Native
Elizabeth   11   Native
Sarah        9   Native
Nancy?     7   Native
William     5   Native
Isabella     2   Native

Then in 1861 (location as 1851) there is an additional daughter present
Susan        7   Native and also
Jane?      16   Native (could this be the Nancy from 1851?)

Daniel does not appear on the 1881 census but Sarah does as a Widow.  I cannot find Sarah after that.

As far as I can tell Robert married a Caroline and had a child John born about 1855.  Isabella (again as far as I can tell) married a William Hartin and had six children.  Beyond this I have not been able to find any other members of the family.

What I am looking for is help in tidying up the details on the family, births, marriages and deaths?

I should probably ask is this a hopeless task?

Any help or direction would be really appreciated.

Regards,
Tony

Australia / The MAY Family to Australia?
« on: Friday 04 May 12 19:17 BST (UK)  »
Mary Ann Alice Barnes married Richard Jones May on 26 June 1847 at Poplar All Saints.  I have found two children Nancy Jones May born 27 Feb 1851 and Sarah Alice born 18 Oct 1852.  They were both baptised on 15 December 1852 at Stepney, St Dunstan & All Saints.  The family’s abode was given as 6 Eltham Place, Mile End Old Town, Middlesex.

Mary Ann Alice Barnes was born 8 May 1823 in Limehouse, Middlesex the daughter of John Barnes and Sarah Hatfield.  Richard Jones May was born (I believe) in Folkestone, Kent c1819 the son of William (as per Marriage Certificate) and Ann.  Both Richard and his father were Mariners.

I have found Mary Ann Alice May with daughter [Ann (sic)] Nancy in 1851.  Richard is noted as absent at sea.  HO107, Piece 1551, Folio 237, Page 24.  After this I cannot find them in the UK apart from the baptism above.

Then in 1869 a Nancy Jones May marries Joseph E Lambert in St Leonards, New South Wales.  Sadly it appears she died in 1874 and as far as I can tell there were no children from the marriage.  The Australian Death Record for Nancy Lambert has her father as Richard J and mother as Mary A.  Apart from this sighting I can find no trace of the other members of the family.  I did manage to find a Mr R May, Mrs and Family as Unassisted Immigrants to NSW landing 15 May 1853 off the Duke of Wellington.  So the questions are:-

1.   Does anyone have more detail of this family that landed in 1853 and are they my May Family?

2.   If it is not my family can anyone find Nancy or any of the others coming to Australia?

3.   If the family did come to Australia can anyone find what happened to them?  Were there any more children etc. etc?

For information two of Mary Ann Alice’s sisters married, then emigrated to Victoria, with their families, in the 1850s.  They were Martha Eliza Flannery and Elizabeth Ware Lopas.

Sorry for the information overload but I believe it best to tell all I know.

Regards,
Tony

Kent / William Fairway 1789 of Maidstone?
« on: Friday 04 May 12 10:23 BST (UK)  »
William Fairway married Elizabeth (Dorothy) Coltar on 12 July 1812 at St Mary’s Church, Lewisham.  On the Marriage Register, Maidstone is written at the side of his name.  Against Elizabeth is written Greenwich, where she was baptised in 1792.  The couple had nine children baptised between 1813 and 1832 in Deptford St Paul.  On the Baptism Register William’s occupation was generally Carpenter or Joiner.  On the last baptism his address was given as Charles Street, Deptford.

I have not found any baptism record for a William Fairway in Maidstone.

There is a possible death registered in 1855 and a burial in Nunhead Cemetery.  The date of burial was 10 January 1855 and his age was said to be 66 with address given as Evelyn Street, Deptford.  I am not certain about the death of Elizabeth Fairway (nee Coltar) although there is a death registered, JFM 1838 in Greenwich.  I have sent for both Death Certificates.

His possible date of birth is based on his death in 1855.

Please can anyone find him on the census of 1841, then hopefully on the 1851 with a confirmed place of birth?  I have found his two youngest children together Ellen, 11 and George, 8 in 1841 but no-one else from the family with them.  Address is Caroline Place, Deptford.  HO107, Piece 488, Book 9.

Is it possible that he was apprenticed as a Carpenter and if so, might there be a record of such?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Tony
