World War One / Missing Navy officer help please
« on: Thursday 04 March 10 11:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find any record of the following chap "Philip Harold William Baker, Lieutenant, Royal Navy" in 1920. DoB 25/12/1883

I have looked on the National Archive site and cannot find him. He is likely to have only served during WWI as his profession before the war, and certainly after 1922 was as a civil engineer (railways and electrification). He spent most of WWI in Buenos Aries, Argentina apparently working for an English company in relation to the local railway which adds to the mystery.

Any suggestions?

Somerset / STOATE family
« on: Monday 22 February 10 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to trace Harriett Stoate born in Bristol around 1801. She married Charles Benjamin Taylor in London in 1831. There seem to be very few references anywhere to "Stoates" and they generally seem to be from the Bristol/Somerset area so hoping that someone can help.

Thanks

Shropshire / Browning of Ford, Salop
« on: Monday 18 January 10 10:58 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am hoping that someone can help. I am trying to find early records of George Browning b. 1820 (all I know was that he was born in England) died 1874 (Forgue, Scotland)

He re-married as a widower in 1862 to Ellen Taylor of Hackney, and on the wedding certificate his address is given as "Ford, Salop" his occupation was "Inspector, Inland Revenue" with his father mentioned as William Browning (occupation farmer). I cannot find any pre 1871 census or birth records, or first wedding for George and I would love to find William, his father.

All the best

Chris

London and Middlesex / Missing births
« on: Monday 14 December 09 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am hoping that some kind soul can have a look at this and help.

I am trying to find the any of the birth records for three sisters who appear on the 1851 census for Limehouse, Stepney. They are:-

Rachel Bourke b. about 1843 Merthyr Tidfil, Wales
Ellen Bourke    b. about 1846 Poplar, Middlesex, England
Mary Bourke    b. about 1849 Wapping, Middlesex, England

Other family members are mother Mary (mother) and an older brother. I cannot find a GRO reference for Rachel or Ellen at all, and the transcription for Mary is wrong according to the GRO. They say it should read "Banbury" rather than "Stepney" which does not seem to fit.

Many thanks

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / English Passport applications
« on: Wednesday 02 December 09 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have looked through the records of English passport applications and found a possible match. I am now wondering how follow this up. The application that I am looking at is 1879.

Also, would one have had to travel to London to apply for a passport or were there regional offices such as in the major ports or other cities?

Thanks

The Common Room / "Lost at Sea"
« on: Friday 27 November 09 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have an ancestor who was "lost at sea" presumably in a ship wreck around 1890-1900. It is thought that she had departed from England but more than this I don't know.

Any advice or suggestions as to where to start looking?

Many thanks

Kent / Walmer Infants School, Church Street
« on: Tuesday 24 November 09 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My G, G, Grandmother was the Headmistress and is shown on the 1881 census as living at "Mistress House", Church Street, Walmer. I am assuming that this house would have been part of the school given its name. I cannot find a modern mention of this house so was wandering if anyone knows if it still exists but under a different name? I know that the school is now two private dwellings.

Any help greatly appreciated

Kent / St James Church Dover
« on: Monday 23 November 09 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, hoping that someone can help with this one...

My G, G, Grandmother was buried at St. James Church in 1902. Having had a quick look online, I have found that the church was badly damaged during WWI and WWII and is now a ruin. The churchyard was paved over and is now a car park. Does anyone know when this happened and also what became of those buried there? I have seen on a local site that some where re-buried in the town and others cremated and the gravestones used for paving. Are there any records of individual reburials?

Many thanks,

Chris
