Staffordshire / Newspaper articles
« on: Tuesday 18 September 07 13:23 BST (UK)  »
An ancestor apparently died from his injuries after falling into a furnace of hot water!

My questions are, as it would seem it was reported in a newspaper, how do we go about finding out which one?  Can it be researched on-line or do we have to go to West Bromwich, where he died, to find out.

The details I have are:

Arthur Lambsden died 8 November 1891 in West Bromwich hospital aged 33.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Many thanks

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Heath family Wiltshire
« on: Tuesday 22 May 07 13:03 BST (UK)  »
A few years ago I  went to the Wiltshire records office for search for the Heath/Dunford families.

I thought I had completed the task successfully and had all the names and dates I could possibly find. However there is one name I did not connect that a few other people have on there trees.

There is no possiblitiy of my going back there in the near future and wondering if there is some that could check for me.  At this stage I do not believe this name belongs to me but of course I could be totally wrong.  These are the details I have:

Parents Christopher Heath 1660 & Margaret Smith 1657

Children I have:
John 1684
Margaret 1686
Christopher 1687
Dinah 1693
John 1694
James 1696
Margaret 1698
Richard 1702 (my connection)

I believe the children were born Great Cheverell

Now the other people have Eleanor 1690 slotted in or simply on her own.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to pass on my information yet in case I send them in the wrong direction.

Many thanks

The Common Room / Birth certificate number? Part 2
« on: Thursday 12 April 07 08:32 BST (UK)  »
Stanmapstone give me an answer to my earlier query regarding numbers on birth certificates that didn't appear to relate to anything and that it was a correction number.  I have another one and am wondering if it is the same answer.

This is for a birth certificate from 1912.  The full name of the father is given.  This name again is crossed out and the no. 8 has been added.   My contact for this certificate has been told that the no. 8 means the name is correct but the father was not present at registration.

Is this the right answer or simply just another error.

Hope this makes sense.

The Common Room / Birth certificate number?
« on: Sunday 25 March 07 13:33 BST (UK)  »
I have a birth certificate on which the name of the father "John" has been crossed out and a number has been written alongside - "14".  The certificate is for 1856.

Someone has suggested that the number has some significance.  If this is true, can anyone tell me what that may be?

Many thanks

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Bastardy Records?
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone advise whether there are any Bastardy Records for the Whitby areas?

I have a Susannah Milestone, mother Mary/Ann Milestone and am trying to confirm her father's name.

I have a marriage certificate for Susannah and give gives her father as Francis Agar but she is listed as Milestone.

I think she was born out of wedlock  :o unless anyone can find a marriage for her mother Mary or Ann Milestone and Francis Agar.  According Familysearch Susannah was born June 1818.  On the 1841 and 1851 census Mary/Ann is still shown as Milestone.

Grateful for any help

Hertfordshire / Orphanage, London Colney
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 22:58 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone tell me if there was an orphanage in London Colney?

It is believe that 4 children of the same family were sent to an orphanage in London Colney and 2 to an orphanage in Lancashire.  They were placed in the orphanage sometime after 1927, unfortunately none of the 4 are still alive.

If it did exist or in fact still does, is it possible to get information about the orphanage and also these 4 particular children that were placed there.

Many thanks for any help

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Marriage John Ewens & Mary Still/Hill
« on: Sunday 15 October 06 13:17 BST (UK)  »
Could someone please help me out. In our tree we have a John Ewens and Mary Hill and from the Familysearch in 2004 got their marriage of 24 February 1772, Marden, or so we thought.  The same year went to the Wiltshire Records to check things out.  Couldn't find anything about Mary HILL her baptism, marriage, family but found Mary STILL and her family, with a marriage of 12 November 1771, Pewsey (not that far away).  Same bridegroom.  We couldn't understand things and spoke to an assistant there who thought it might have been due to Banns.

Now I made a terrible mistake and failed (I know I'll get my knuckles rapped for that) and did not make notes of our conversation, exact details etc. just the new date and the witnesses Robert Still/Benjamin Bryant. :-[

Is there anyone out there who can help me solve the problem.  Are there two marriages or not? What I can say for certain is the John Ewens and Mary (Still/Hill) had a daughter Elizabeth 1774 from whom my husband is descended.

Please, any help gratefully received.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Births - Smith, Egham
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 12:18 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could put me straight on Smith births in Egham Surrey, please.

I have from the same family 7 children born Egham according to 1881 and 1891 census sheets.  I have looked on the IGI but nothing that comes under Egham.  What would the registration district be?  These are the children in question:

Thomas M 1871
David 1875
Johnathan 1877
Ernest C 1879
Percy 1881
Sydney 1883
Alice 1886

These are all circa. dates.

I don't expect anyone to find them all for me but can someone point me to the right district I should be looking for.

Very grateful for any help
