Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with an address in Edinburgh please
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 15:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to read the address where an ancestor was living in Edinburgh when he married in 1864. I take it to be No 17 H??? Close, Pleasance, Edinburgh.

I can't see anything on a current map which fits the bill. I have had a look at some of the historic town plans on the NLS website, but drawn a blank.

Wondered if anyone here had any ideas.

I am hoping for help with this marriage of an ancestor which took place in the St Andrews district of Edinburgh in 1864. In the column which lists the parents, I am trying to read the part in brackets after  "John Houston Seaman", and before "Deceased".

Any help would be appreciated.

Midlothian / Churches in Musselburgh - COMPLETED
« on: Friday 18 October 13 09:58 BST (UK)  »
My 4x gt grandfather, James Hay (1750-1810), was a baker in Market Street in Musselburgh. His burial record states where in the churchyard he is buried. I would like to try to identify which church this would have been. I have done a little poking about on Google to try to identify which churches would have been there at the time, but wondered whether anybody knows of a resource where I could take this research a little bit further.

I would be grateful for any help.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help needed with Edinburgh street name please
« on: Wednesday 09 January 13 17:27 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to find out where this place is which occurs on one of my ancestor's certificates, but first I need to determine exactly what it says. The death was registered in 1888 in Edinburgh St Andrews.

Any help with either part would be greatly appreciated.

« on: Saturday 10 November 12 23:56 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for help to read the second line of this text. The name on the first line is John Houston. His occupation is listed as Seaman, but I am trying to read the bit after that.

Any help would be appreciated.

This extract is from a birth registered in the St Giles district of Edinburgh in 1887. I wonder if anybody can tell me what it says on the line above Chambers Street.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Wicklow / Completed: Marriage records around 1840
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 15:42 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother, Ellen Colclough, was born in Co Wicklow in 1852. Her parents' names were Thomas Colclough and Eliza/Elizabeth Byrne.

I searched the new Wicklow marriage index on IFHF this morning for a marriage between Thomas and Eliza, and it does return one match, in 1840. I'm not inclined to pay 40 euros though when I only want that one record. I have tried the LDS site, but can't find the marriage.

I suspect I already know the answer to this, but is there any other way I can get the information?

Renfrewshire / Completed: Likely burial place for a Bridge of Weir death
« on: Sunday 22 May 11 00:18 BST (UK)  »
I have recently discovered a relative who died in Bridge of Weir in 1975. I was hoping that someone on the board here with some local knowledge could point me in the direction of a likely burial place, or where I might get access to burial records.

Any responses appreciated.

Lanarkshire / COMPLETED - GROS reference help please
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 17:43 BST (UK)  »
Today on the 1911 census, I have found a family member as an 8 year old child living in some kind of institution. He is listed as an inmate. I don't want to keep going backwards, paying as I go, until I find the address. The registration district is listed as Springburn and the GROS reference is 644//06 034/0S 014.

Is it possible to tell from the reference where this would have been? Grateful for any help.
