Armed Forces / Trying to find Military Medical Records from 1947
« on: Monday 06 November 23 20:06 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to locate the whereabouts (if they still exist) of hospital records relating to Alfred George Mason of the Royal Army Service Corps. He enlisted in Oct 1945.
In June 1947, Alfred was serving in Austria where he had an accident, resulting in damage to his spine. He underwent extensive medical treatment before being medically discharged in 1950.

I have basic service records, but nothing relating to any medical treatment.  Would anyone know if military medical records for this period would still be in existence and, if so, where they may be held.  I have no idea if the hospital in Austria would have been a Military Hospital or a civilian one.

A long shot, I know, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks,

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / A Kingston - North Waltham Church Memorial
« on: Sunday 10 January 21 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I'm currently researching the names on the WW1/WW2 memorial at a nearby church in North Waltham.  I have managed to identify all who are commemorated apart from one individual, listed only as A Kingston who, I believe, fell in WW1 (WW2 fallen are listed separately).  Unfortunately, I have no first name, rank or branch of service.

I have checked the 1911 census but can find no obvious link to the village (or nearby Popham), for anyone with the surname of Kingston.  Looking at the available information on the CWGC website doesn't give me any firm starting point either.  Ancestry has given me a few leads, but none have resulted in finding a male, with the initial 'A' with links to the area.

I believe that there may be two documents worth checking at the Hampshire Record Office, but I will have to wait until Covid restrictions are relaxed/lifted.  Whilst I wait for that opportunity, I wonder if anyone has any other ideas/suggestions I could look at, in the meantime, in order to positively identify this individual.

Many thanks, in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / John Budd 1940-2009
« on: Saturday 09 January 21 13:51 GMT (UK)  »
Good afternoon all.

I hope that everyone is keeping safe and well.
My wife recently found this photo of her father and I wonder if anyone could tidy it up and even colourise it.  She doesn't know that I'm doing this so it will, hopefully be a nice surprise for her (or I'll be on the naughty-step (again).

As an aside, John is the Great Grandson of William G Loft (1803-1887) who won the Grand National on Cure All, in 1845.

Thank you, in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with father's occupation please
« on: Friday 11 January 19 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.
I'm having difficulty working out the occupation for William Chapman Bradley's father, John.  The document is William C's baptism record (dated 11/06/1820) and the occupation looks like 'Lunt'.  I've not heard of that, and Google is obviously sulking as it's not being too helpful!

Is there anyone who could give me a nudge in the right direction please?
Thanks, in advance.

The Common Room / Family History Magazine - John Henry Loft notes
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 19:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

I was out and about and reading an article about a family history magazine that was offering the notes of (I think) the Grimsby MP John Henry Loft (1769-1849).  As this chap is my wife's 4x G Grandfather, I would like to establish which magazine it was so that I can order a back issue.

Has anyone seen this (it was a recent issue, I'm sure)?  If so, could you please let me know.

As an aside, Wikipedia shows him as being known for corrupt politics! Nice to see that over the years, we've made progress, eh?  :-\

Thanks, in advance.

World War One / A E Thorne Monmouthshire Regiment
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 20:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

I'm trying to find information on the above individual for a friend.

I have found his medal record card and that gives his service number as 2506.  However, I can't seem to find any other record for him.  I've checked attestation documents, pension records, SWB records and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website but can't find any other mention of him.

I know that lots of WW1 records were losst in WW2, but wonder if anyone can suggest anywhere else for me to have a look at.

Thanks, in advance for your advice.

I'm going to trawl through the lost bombers website, but wonder if anyone has a better idea?

It would be great to properly identify Mr Taylor.

Hi everyone.  A friend of me has asked if I can try to help her find a missing relative.  I thought it would be fairly easy with it being an unusual name, but it’s got me stumped too!  So, over to my chums on Rootschat!

I’m looking for any information relating to William Albert George Thicknesse.  The information I have on him so far is as follows:

Born about 1845 somewhere in Dorset.
On 25 Jun 1875 he marries Annie Hughes in the Independent Chapel In Uttoxeter, Staffs & Derbs.  His occupation is given as Lay Deacon.  His father is given as Benjamin, a deceased farmer.  Annie is from Hadley Road, Southampton and her father is given as Robert a deceased soldier.

The first census I can find William on is the 1881 Census.  He is living in the Missionary House in Broadminch, Tiverton with his wife Annie.  His occupation is given as Missionary Preacher.  Others listed at the address are daughter Maude age 4, daughter Annie aged 2, daughter Alberta aged 10 months and his 23 year old brother Frederick.

The next Census is the 1891 Census.  William is missing, but Annie is listed in Cross Park, Heavitree, Exeter with the 3 daughters plus new sons, William aged 9 and Robert aged 3.

William returns in the 1901 census at Cross Park, Heavitree, Exeter.  This time, his occupation is shown as Builder.  Annie is still with him, as is Maud, William and Robert.

The final piece I have is William’s death certificate.  He died on 22 Jan 1922 aged 78 years, in Knowle Mental Hospital, Fareham, Southampton.  Unfortunately, the informant is listed as the Hospital Medical Officer.

I’ve tried several variations of the surname Thicknesse (Thickness, Thickens, Thick) but can’t seem to find any of the missing pieces.  His role as a Lay Preacher probably took him far and wide, but would there be any centralised records of Lay Preachers that I could check out?  In addition, does anyone have any ideas where William is hiding in 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891?  All help and guidance, gratefully received.

Thanks, in advance,
Thudders
