Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Martha ? - Robert PHILLIPS marriage
« on: Tuesday 03 January 23 16:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Nottingham RootsChatters

I am trying to find the parents for Martha Brown born around 1811 in Brinsley. I have found two potential baptisms that fit and I am trying to eliminate one or the other. Martha later became Martha Gadsby and was my 4 x G Grandmother. She consistently states in the census's that Brinsley is her birthplace.

Baptism 7 Jan 1810 : Brinsley Daughter of Samuel and Ruby Brown.
Baptism 23 Dec 1810 : St Lawrence, Heanor, Derbyshire. Parents = Wm & Mary.

As well as the census birthplaces there are other connections with Brinsley which made me lean towards Samuel and Ruby but someone has pointed out a possible problem!

The 1841 Census for Brinsley shows Samuel Brown age 70 living with Abraham Brown age 20 (likely his son baptised 2 Apr 1818 Brinsley) and Robert and Martha Phillips age 30. Also their children Robert Phillips age 4 and John age 1.

If Martha Phillips was Samuel & Ruby's daughter, Martha Brown, then she can't be Martha Gadsby and Samuel and Ruby are out of the search... But I cannot find a marriage between a Robert Phillips and Martha Brown (which I guess is good but I'd like to know who they are one way or the other to be sure) or even to Martha something-else.

I wonder if anyone can shine a light on this for me?

Many Thanks

Rob

Hello Cheshire RootsChatters.

I am helping a friend to research her family and we are looking for information about Samuel Grocott who was born around 1785. There are three possible baptisms in Wybunbury and we are trying to work out which one is 'ours'.

Fortunately the three baptisms are several years apart which does give a clue.

28 Jul 1782 - father = John Grouwcett
17 Sep 1786 - mother = Elizabeth Groucett
20 Apr 1788 - father = Peter Groukett

'Our' Samuel Grocott was married to 'Hannah' (this is from his son's baptism). (the other two Samuel's appear to have married a Lydia and Sarah respectively). Ideally we will eventually pair each Samuel up with his correct parent... but there are a lot of Samuel Grocott's in that area so it may never become clear.

We have found burials for Hannah Grocott (11 Feb 1875 Weston Cheshire) and Samuel Grocott (10 Dec 1878 Englesea Brook Methodist Chapel, Weston - age 92 which fits with the 1786 baptism). Both of these are Cheshire Non-conformist Records. They appear to have been Methodists and on the 'Runcorn Circuit'.

What we cannot on-line see is the original record. We are hoping that it may have additional information (i.e. were these two people actually a married couple? 'wife of Samuel' maybe)

Would anyone know if these records are kept at Cheshire Record Office? Would it be possible for someone there to look them up for us? (If a fee is required that would be OK).

We are currently waiting for death certificates, but hoping that the burial records might throw further clues our way.

Many Thanks

Leicestershire / Magenta Street - Leicester

Does anybody know where Magenta Street was in Leicester? I have it as an address in the 1921 Census. I can see that it existed in the 1931 Electoral Register.

Many thanks.

Kent Lookup Requests / William Gilbert - baptism or birth 1882 Queensborough
« on: Saturday 27 August 22 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Hello Kent Rootschatters

I have been contacted by another researcher as we have similar families in our trees. I've done more research on 'my' people and now believe we are not related - but I'm trying to prove it fully by looking at one of her ancestors.

From the 1921 Census we have William Gilbert - age 39 and 5 months (therefore born in 1882) and it states that he was born 'Kent Queenboro'. In 1921 he was living near Birmingham (Solihull I think). He appears to have married Violet Timms in 1919 and their marriage certificate states that his father was also called William Gilbert (deceased) - Contractors Manager.

The family believe that William had a brother called Colin (which is why I have been contacted - but my Colin doesn't appear to be related) but this is just hearsay at the moment.

We are looking for a baptism or birth record for William with a father = William. I have seen some baptisms with a different father.

Any help or a pointer in the right direction would be appreciated!

Many Thanks

Rob

Leicestershire / Edward and Alice Coltman/Caulton/Coulton late 17th Century
« on: Tuesday 17 May 22 09:53 BST (UK)  »
I have (hopefully) traced my Coltman line in Leicester back to Richard Coltman - baptised 4 March 1698 in St Martin's, Leicester. Parents are Edward and Alice.
He is likely to have married Ann Boot on 3 May 1738 at All Saints.

I have been looking for more information about 'Edward and Alice' and cannot find a marriage or any other children - however there is an Edward and Alice Caulton/Coulton who have several children baptised in St Martin's church in the same time period as shown below:-

Edward Coulton - baptised 9 Aug 1700 at Saint Martin, Leicester, Birth Date 2 Aug 1700
Father's Name Edward Coulton
Mother's Name Alice
He was buried 23 Aug 1700 at Saint Martin, Leicester

John Caulton - baptised 30 Oct 1701 at St Martin, Leicester
Father = Edward, Some records say mother is Alice, others say Anne.

Elizabeth Caulton - baptised 5 Jan 1703 at Saint Martin, Leicester
Father's Name Edward Caulton
Mother's Name Alice
She was buried 27 Feb 1703 at Saint Martin, Leicester

Anne Caulton - baptised 19 Sep 1706 at Saint Martin, Leicester
Father's Name Edward Caulton
Mother's Name Alice
She was buried 22 Aug 1710 at Saint Martin, Leicester, age 3

I cannot find a marriage for Edward and Alice Caulton/Coulton either.

Does anyone have any of these people in their 'tree' or know any more about them? It would be nice to know if they are all the same family! General opinions also welcome.

Many thanks

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Baptism at Spaldwick for Stephen Pearson
« on: Tuesday 07 May 19 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi

One of my 3xg grandfathers was Stephen Pearson who spent most of his life living in Ringstead, Nhants. In the 1851 & 1861 census his birthplace is shown as Spaldwick, Hunts. In 1871 he then says Cotterstock, Hunts. All three give an approximate birth year of 1796. I wonder if anyone could help me to find his baptism?

Many Thanks

Rob

Many years ago I was given a date for the marriage of John Buckby and Elizabeth Willis in Rothwell. 25 May 1842. I have been asked by someone for more information about this marriage and am embarrassed that I don't have a source! Elizabeth is a distant cousin and I never got around to properly checking... Would anybody be able to verify this information for me?

Many Thanks

Rob

Hi All

I wonder if anyone could  have a look in Kilby PRs for a marriage of John Stephens to Sarah - around 1730?

I have been searching for the baptism (and parents) of Ann Stephens for many years. I have posted previously re her on the below link.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=634913.msg4826515#msg4826515

I have been laid up at home with a bad cold and decided to install the FamilySearch app on my phone. Whilst I was playing around with it I had another look at Ann and one thing lead to another and I now think she may have been baptised in Kilby 19 Mar 1738. Parents John and Sarah. There are other siblings born earlier.

I had previously thought that her husband John Langham had been born in Burton Overy - but today discovered that the Burton Overy 'John' had later married Ann Gale in the same village and so I have now ruled him out.

I have now found a John Langham baptised in Kilby 27 February 1746 as a possible future husband for Ann Stephens..

suddenly it all seems to be fitting in place! Hopefully this will still make sense when my cold has gone...

Thanks for reading

Rob

Hello Northamptonshire neighbours.

My g-g-g-grandmother was Elizabeth Judge but I have not been able to find a baptism for her. I have seen her in other trees as the daughter of Thomas Judge and Mary Frost. This couple had a series of children baptised between 1792-1803 in Whittlebury. I have seen mention of Elizabeth Judge as being born in 1794 in Whittlebury with these parents but with no source.

Elizabeth was married (to Robert Grantham) in Whittlebury 1821, and is also buried there (1848) so there's a good chance that these really are her parents - but I would really like to have a bit of evidence to go with it.

I have found an Elizabeth Judge baptism date 10 Nov 1794 at Preston Bissett in Bucks as an alternative so I can't stick with Thomas and Mary as parents without that doubt in my mind..

Could anyone help to throw some light on this?

Many Thanks

Rob (Leicester)
