Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas CAMM/Ann HUSBAND/Benjamin LANGTON - Sheffield
« on: Friday 11 September 15 15:33 BST (UK)  »
Nights are drawing-in so it's back to brick-walls.....   If anyone is going to the Sheffield Archives would very much appreciate some help in tracing marriage and a burial.

Firstly, I'm looking for a marriage of  Thomas Camm (Scissor maker) and Ann Husband. (grt x 3 grandparents)  I think they would have married circa 1827.  They have two boys baptised William Husband Camm (my grt x 2 grandfather) on 9 Mar 1827 and Thomas Husband Camm 9 March 1828.(he dies in 1832)  Ann sometimes has first names as Ann Primrose.

By the 1841 Census Ann is living with Benjamin Langton in Mackenzie Walk, Ecclesall Bierlow with 5 children,   their eldest daughter baptised 19 August 1832, so I am assuming Thomas Camm died between 1828 - 1832 and am looking for his burial.

I also, would like to see if there is a marriage between Benjamin Langton and Ann Camm (nee Husband) between 1828 - 1832. The Will of Ann's father "dis-owns" Benjamin so I wonder if Benjamin & Ann never married (or he just didn't like him!).

Help appreciated.  Many thanks

Hi Folks

Would appreciate a second opinion on the mother of Thomas Foster born Selby 1825.  His baptism record at Selby Abbey shows his mother as "Ann" (unmarried)  On his marriage certificate which I ordered years and years ago his father was "blank" (which I expected).  I had never been able to trace a suitable candidate for Ann in terms, of marriages or deaths, and so accepted (sort of) that was the end of the line.

However, I recently looked  at the marriage as recorded in the Parish Record and a surprising snippet came to light. The vicar has put both parents for Isabella Silversides (who Thomas married) and against Thomas's name, father blank but mother "Nancy Pilkerton".  I had always assumed that Nancy Foster who married Joseph Pilkington was his aunt.  I know  that "Nancy" is a derivative of "Ann", but....

James Foster and Mary Rayner (Thomas's grandparents and who he was with in Selby in 1841) had the following children all baptised Brayton:

John 1790, Elizabeth 1791, William 1793, ANN 1795, Nancy 1802.  I've only ever been able to trace William and Nancy.  Dade records confirm they are all of the same family.

My conundrum - is Nancy the mother of Thomas and when she baptised him she was calling herself Ann (although she married as Nancy)???  Did Thomas just say "Nancy" so that both his parents were not left blank on the certificate????

Thomas went on to name his 10 children:  James, Mary, Ann, Rayner, Thomas, William, Jane, Guy, John and Isabella.

Any thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Joseph RAYNER of Gateforth - 1795 Will COMPLETED
« on: Monday 17 November 14 14:11 GMT (UK)  »
Would appreciate an opinion on making sense of the 1795 Will of Joseph Rayner of Gateforth.

He bequeaths  £26 to each of the following daughters

Ann Kirby of Hirst  (Courtney)  -  (Ann Rayner  married  William Kirby. Butcher,  1776)
Rosamund Taylor wife of Thomas Taylor, Haddlesey
Elizabeth wife of John Johnson

He bequeaths £13 to his daughter Sarah Dixon of Selby and £13 to be divided equally to his grandsons William and John Dixon also of Selby

He then bequeaths everything else to his two remaining daughters Mary Foster husband of James Foster (my great x 5 grandparents);  and Frances Taylor wife of Robert Taylor both of Gateforth.

Now this is where my confusion kicks in!!   He bequeaths  “to my son in law Samuel Rouston the sum of £10 to be paid out at interest while he the said Samuel Rouston comes of age and then to be paid to him but if he should die before that time the £10 would be divided between my surviving daughters”   The Will goes on to say “and also my Will and mind is that my said Executors shall and will keep my said son-in-law Samuel Rouston two years after my decease and put him to school and the interest of the Ten Pounds to pay for his Leanring”

The Executors to the Will were his daughters Mary and Frances.

I cannot find a trace of a Samuel Rouston (or name variants) in the area.

I’m beginning to wonder if I am reading this correctly, Samuel Rouston cannot be his son-in-law can he as it would appear he is a person of school age???

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Sheffield Marriage - John Ramskar/Charlotte Smith
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone help with the marriage of John Ramskar (variants: Ramsker, Ramscar, Ramscarr) with Charlotte Smith, please.   The marriage was possibly in the Sheffield area.

I know Charlotte's maiden name from the birth certificate of their youngest daughter Emma born in 1839.

I have full information relating to John and Charlotte and their family,  but it is their marriage that has eluded me for many years.  According to census records Charlotte was born in Hull.

Their eldest child, Elizabeth Harriet was baptised in Sheffield Cathedral 27 January 1822.  I'm guessing John and Charlotte married around 1821.

Many thanks

Occupation Interests / West Riding Constabulary Resignation
« on: Thursday 08 May 14 13:15 BST (UK)  »
Would be grateful if anyone can help.  My grandfather's police service records in 1914 states "Resigned (c) 25 Sept 1914".  Does anyone know what the "c" indicates, please? Some records for others have a "Resigned (v)".

Any one able to shed any light on the abbreviations would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Would appreciate any suggestions on how to find the above couple after 1881.    The story so far.  My great x2 aunt Jane was born in Riccall in 1827 (parish register) and Thomas in Ripon (various ages on census).  In 1841 Jane was a servant in Wistow.  In 1851 she is living with Thomas Pickersgill (carpenter) 79 Ebenezer Place, York.  I found the couple through searching for Jane’s brother William Silversides who is, fortunately, staying with her.  In 1861, Jane and Thomas are living at Albert Street, York (Jane’s nephew Mark Saltmarsh is living with them).  In 1871 and 1881, they are living 10 St Clements Terrace, York (Jane’s niece Jane Slater is staying in 1871).  In 1881 it was strange  that Thomas changed his occupation to Retired Tanner.

I had never been able to find a marriage for Jane and Thomas, however several newspaper articles in July 1881 “revealed all”.  Thomas was in court for desertion of his wife in 1844 (she  lived in Bradford)  From the articles, there is reference to a woman who he had lived with who called herself “Mrs Pickersgill”, i.e. my Jane Silversides.  The newspapers reported that Thomas was fairly well-off, owning his property, several cottages in Dale Street which he rented out, property in Driffield and had recently sold two houses to York Corporation for £600.

Without purchasing loads of random death certificates, my efforts to find them, particularly Jane,  since 1881 have gone cold.  I had hoped the Will route may lead to Thomas, alas I can’t see anything on Will Calendar I think would be him, having spent hours cross-referencing addresses etc.  I have on my list to visit Wakefield Archives (who say they hold the Police Court records of 1881) to see if anything comes up in those as he had to pay his wife a weekly allowance).

Just wondered if going down the “property route” would lead to anything???  Any suggestions gratefully received.

Durham Lookup Requests / Help with birth place (1851 Census) - Ursula Wake
« on: Wednesday 24 July 13 10:17 BST (UK)  »
Would be grateful for help of local knowledge of Durham in establishing birth place of Ursula Wake (nee Laverack born circa 1775)

In 1851, Ursula was living in Brandsby, Yorkshire (HO107 Piece: 2370 Folio 99 Page: 9).  Place of birth has been transcribed as Ealey, Do Durham.  Looking at it, it could be Exley, Co Durham.

As I cannot find either of these, would appreciate any local knowledge of Durham of where the place is.

Many thanks

I have also found a birth for another daughter, Mabel S Stones born 02 Aug 1880 New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts (father Frank Stones (Die Sinker) Mother Emma Ramsker)

I have found a marriage for Bel C Stone (assume this is Mabel) (parents Francis N Stone and Emma Ramsker) to an Edgar E Chittendon 17 November 1905 in Sunderland Massachusetts.

I have not been able to trace any further details of any of this family since the 1880 census.  If anyone is able to help with this brickwall relating to the marriages of the daughters, other census, or deaths,  it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Emma Ramskar and Francis Knowles Stones Sheffield
« on: Saturday 27 April 13 21:28 BST (UK)  »
I have "lost" trace of Emma Ramskar.  Emma married Francis Knowles Stones at the Church of St Thomas, Crookes, Sheffield on 12 July 1863.  I have found an advert in a newspaper from 1863 (just prior to her marriage) as a Milliner at 118 Barker Pool.  In 1861 she was living with her parents in Silver Street.  Both her parents died in 1867.  I have been unable to trace her or her husband following her marriage.  Any help with this brick would be greatly appreciated.
