Worcestershire / What is "Hill End" in Droitwich / Dodderhill ?
« on: Tuesday 17 August 10 00:39 BST (UK)  »
I've seen many different types of records referring to "Hill End," for instance, as the abode in a parish record. Sometimes, it seems to be a part of Droitwich but, other times, Dodderhill.  Is it a street or a neighborhood or something else? And, is it me, but are Droitwich and Dodderhill sometimes used interchangeably?  Thanks for your consideration!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Leeds neighborhoods?

The new 'National Probate Calendar' for England & Wales at ancestry.com has the following listing:

CARR Grice Ethell of 12 Brandon-terrace Slade Hill Moortown Leeds died 16 February 1928 Probate Wakefield 27 April to Sarah Carr widow.  Effects L2108 18s5d.

Geography in England seems so complicated to me.  Could someone please explain "Slade Hill Moortown?"  Is "Brandon-terrace" a street?  Thanks for your effort!

John GRICE married Sarah GIB(B) 18 Oct 1808 in Weaverthorpe.  Are there births (& parents!) for them perhaps in the 1769-1790 registers?

Family members were definitely Methodist by 1840 if not earlier.

Thank you for your efforts!

The Common Room / London Gazette: 'Receiving Orders'?
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 23:55 BST (UK)  »
This is my first post: I hope I am doing this right!

My first-ever london-gazette.co.uk search has turned up on page 2733 from 11 May 1888 of a table titled "Receiving Orders--continued".  Significant columns are headed Debtor's Name, Address, Court, Whether Debtor's or Creditor's Petition, and a few more.

Grice Ethell CARR is listed as a 'Grocer and Tea Dealer" in Wakefield, the Wakefield Court, and as a Debtor's petition.  I have some newby questions:

1.  What have I found?  What appears to be the first page of the section refers to Bankruptcy Act, 1883 but there is no explanation of 'Receiving Orders.'

2.  I have my great uncle Grice Ethell Carr in the 1881 Whitwood YKS census as a 16 year old unemployed grocer's shopman, in 1891 WhitwoodMere YKS as a 26 year old glass founder, and in 1901 Leeds YKS as a 36 year old insurance superintendent worker.  Do you think it is the same person?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated!
