The Common Room / Lodgers List - electors 1910
« on: Wednesday 31 May 23 22:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,
I've just discovered that my grandfather (a joiner & builder) was renting a Furnished Bedroom from his father in 1910.  He was paying 12s 6d a week, and would have been aged about 23.

The Resource is the Lodgers List for Parliamentary and Parochial Electors.

Under what rules would he have been given the vote.

Cheers,
Mike

Norfolk Lookup Requests / 1940s POWELL deaths in Norwich
« on: Monday 23 May 22 16:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

In 1939 Anthony Powell and his wife Annie (or Anne) nee THOMAS were living in Chapel Alley, Queens Road, Norwich.  Anthony died in the summer of 1940 (aged 80) and Annie in the second quarter of 1944 (aged 85).  They were both in the circus as Equestrians, often working internationally and possibly with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.  I'm currently not aware they had any family in Norwich, but work in progress.

I don't know Norwich at all.  Where, please, is the most likely place they would have been buried?  Also, did the local newspapers carry any announcements?

Described as "La Belle Duchess" there are 4 photographs here https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=311573.0

The first one could now be Annie whilst "Belle 2-4" is probably her daughter.

Kind regards

Mike

Hi, I'm looking for an old photograph of the chemist shop of J.L. HUNT on Conway Road, Colwyn Bay. John Lambert HUNT was the pharmacist there in the first half of the 20th century.

Census and Resource Discussion / 1871 Census addresses - Manchester
« on: Monday 30 September 19 12:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

I looked up a Sarah ATKIN who I found in Moss Side Manchester (RG10; Piece: 4007; Folio: 116; Page: 26).  I then went to the Enumerator's Notes page for District 74.  I can find a Monton Street listed and can find that on old OS maps.  However, I am struggling to identify further streets.  What I think has been done was instead of using Post Office approved street names the enumerators have used the house names - often seen high up on the front walls of rows of houses - to further identify the houses.  But no help at all when the houses have been demolished!

Firstly, do others think that is the case here?

Secondly, if that is the case, does anyone know on which street she lived?

Cheers

Derbyshire / William PICKFORD (b. 1790) Mellor ? related to Samuel PICKFORD (b. 1808)
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

My 3x Gt grandfather was Samuel PICKFORD, born 1808 in Mellor.

A number a trees on Ancestry seem to give his parents as William PICKFORD, b.1775 in Christchurch, Hampshire and Sarah PHILLIPS, Staffordshire.  Their children were all born in Staffordshire, either side of Samuel, who was born in Mellor.

This family grouping seems a bit unlikely.  I have found in the 1851 census of Marple a 61 year William PICKFORD born in Mellor (Ref: HO107; Piece: 2154; Folio: 24; Page: 6).  His occupation was a Cotton Spinner, where as Samuel's was a Carder.  I think this chap is more likely to be Samuel's elder brother, as Mellor is only two and a half miles from Marple.

Please can anyone access the Mellor Parish Register for Samuel's parents.

Montgomeryshire / Baptism Abode: Prison
« on: Tuesday 17 October 17 14:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

On my 2 x great grandfather John Richard HUMPHREYS' Baptism record in Montgomery on the 11th January 1839 is a curious Abode comment:

Meifod, but now Prisoner in the County Gaol

His parents were Robert (a farmer) and Mary HUMPHREYS.  Please can anyone tell me why he may have been there?  I'm assuming it's the father in trouble.

Hi Folks,

I'm doing some research for a family member.  Please can anyone identify the place Ardhoy.  Martin DIAMOND was in receipt of a Chelsea Pension in Glasgow.  Later his widow Isabella moves to Manchester, England.  I'm currently assuming, with no evidence, that Martin died in Glasgow, between 1851 and 1861.
