Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Daughter's occupation?
« on: Saturday 04 April 20 13:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, not managed to get on Rootschat for some time now, but as I've been quarantined to home for 12 weeks thought I would resume my favourite hobby.
I have eventually found 2 members of my missing family in the 1841 census, both working at Lancaster Castle. Mum Cecelia is recorded as Matron (which ties in with other evidence I have) Daughter Charlotte is also there, but I cannot make out her occupation.
Help please  :)
Keep safe everyone

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / House inscription - please advise!
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 19:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I've been asked to help interpret this writing on the eaves of a house in the Lancashire countryside. I thought it might be in Latin, and there may be Lancashire roses or ships anchors, but just can't work it out. It is definitely not the name of the house or any family who has lived in it.
Any help or ideas would be gratefully received by me and the new owner of the house.

The Common Room / Incorrect page number on GRO
« on: Saturday 16 June 18 14:32 BST (UK)  »
My apologies if this has come up before, but I have never come across it in over 10 years.
I ordered a marriage certificate from GRO, using the registration details from Free BMD and also Ancestry.
I received a full refund on my order and an e-mail saying "There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted"
I double checked the references, the page number on all the records is 1296, however this is on the BMD page -
'The expected page range for this district is 1309 to 1459'
Are there any other sources where I can get the correct registration details?

The Common Room / Meaning of Cor Cer on Burial records?
« on: Sunday 10 September 17 16:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
can anyone tell me please what Cor Cer means in the notes on a burial record. I've come across it on Lancashire OPC for Warton Parish when I was looking at a burial record in 1850 for George Hodgson. The same note is on quite a few others on the same page. I thought it might be Latin Corpus something? and googled it but got nothing useful back.

The Common Room / Abbreviations in London Electoral Registers
« on: Saturday 19 August 17 15:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I've come across some abbreviations after the names of people I am researching in the London Electoral Registers, and have googled to no avail. There are also different letters next to other people on the same page. Two people in the family I am looking at have the letters AFTC, followed by numbers i.e.
In 1947 and 1948 Henry Frank Leinweber has AFTC/24/1
his father Henry Thomas has AFTC/24/4
There is another man on the page with AFSV/44/1 and one with YAFS/2237764

Does anyone know if these have some military or civil defence connection?  ??? ???

The Common Room / A puzzling Newspaper Ad
« on: Saturday 15 July 17 19:54 BST (UK)  »
I know what a Joist is and I have googled this short advert from the Lancaster Gazette until I am blue in the face but still have no idea what it means. It appeared once in the newspaper, the name and address belong to a small farm I have been researching, but I am still no nearer understanding what it means   ??? ???
It reads:
                                                   JOIST
Taken in at Bondgate and Starbank
                              Apply to Richard Jenkinson, Ellel

The Common Room / To be Let by ticket
« on: Sunday 09 July 17 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm doing some newspaper research for a friend, looking at farm tenants in the early 1800's. I'm coming across a lot of ads that say farm 'to be let by ticket'  I'm just curious to know exactly what it means? I am assuming it cannot be a raffle, but does it perhaps mean sealed bids?
Regards

Lancashire / Catholic baptisms in or near Ribbleton in 18th century
« on: Wednesday 13 April 16 12:57 BST (UK)  »
I've hit a brick wall with William Worthington. He was born about 1769 and was Roman Catholic. I have his marriage in St. John's Preston and also in St. Wilfred's RC Church in Preston, plus most of his children's baptisms at St. Wilfreds and his burial in 1842. He was living in Ribbleton when his children were born and is in St Wilfred's 1820 census, although not in the 1810 one (I don't think that earlier one included Ribbleton)
What I don't have is his birth/baptism. Assuming he was from Ribbleton or Preston can anyone advise as to where Catholic baptisms would have taken place before St. Wilfred's Church opened?
Any ideas or advice gratefully received  :)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Really Struggling with this Will
« on: Thursday 03 March 16 19:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
This is the Will of Thomas Fleetwood. I've had some help already on this, but this section is proving very difficult and there are two guys mentioned who I am interested in - there's something about his brother Robert and then after the two words in large text (which I can't make out either!) he refers to his son Edmund.
I know his son Edmund inherited a place called Rossall in Lancashire. It's not clear if Edmund was the son and heir or his brother William was (he got The Vache in Buckinghamshire) I don't think Thomas refers to either place in this section, but my eyes really are letting me down these days. I've enlarged one word at a time and still find it impossible to read.
Could it be because I'm a left hander?!
