The Common Room / Help with Dora Bartholomei please
« on: Friday 15 March 24 16:21 GMT (UK)  »
Dora Marguerite Irčne Benedicta Bartholomei was born in Paris in 1891, the daughter of Michel Bartholomei and Maria Martinoff (both Russian, though Maria Martinoff became a naturalised French citizen in 1925).
I have not been able to find any records of a marriage or death and wondered if anyone could help.
I have a copy of her Parisian birth record, and she was the informant on her mother's death record in 1927 in Cannes.
The Chicago Tribune of 19th December 1933 has a short article on a lecture Dora gave about her father.
Ancestry has a crew list that shows her as a stewardess arriving in the US, June 25 1936.
Apart from a couple of other indirect references, I've not found any mentions of her. My family tree is the only one she shows up on in an Ancestry search.
If anyone could give me any leads it would be fabulous.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Probate date 1615
« on: Wednesday 06 December 23 08:54 GMT (UK)  »
At the bottom of the will of Nicholas Symons is appended details of the probate, which is impossible for me to read - is it Latin or have I just completely lost the plot?
I'd be really grateful if someone could summarise any useful information contained in this part of the will. It seems to me that probate was granted in January 1615.
Thanks very much.
This part of the will is much fainter than the rest, I assume the ink used was different and has faded more. Apologies for the quality of the image but it's the best I have.

Technical Help / Copying a source on Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 18:53 GMT (UK)  »
On Ancestry, I have created a marriage fact, along with a source and citation. Whilst the marriage fact copies over from the groom to the bride, the source and citation does not. When looking at the marriage fact for the bride, it appears unsourced.
Is there any way to copy the source and citation from the groom to the bride, rather than having to enter the information again?
Thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / COMPLETED: Help with reading a will please
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 06:56 GMT (UK)  »
I'm in the process of transcribing this will and wondered if anyone could help me with the highlighted words. I'm afraid this is the best copy available.
Thanks in advance.

Technical Help / COMPLETED: I can't download an image from Familysearch.
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have found a page on FamilySearch and I would like to download it if possible. Unfortunately, the download and print buttons don't seem to be working for me.
I have tried using Firefox, Chrome and Edge, all with no success. I can take a screen grab of the relevant information but I'd really like the full page if possible.
Any suggestions?

A link to the page I'm looking at is here:

Thanks in advance for your help.

Armed Forces / What age did you need to be to join the Royal Marines in 1903?
« on: Monday 13 November 23 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
Sidney Hayhurst Fell enlisted in the Royal Marines on the 10th March 1903. His service record from the National Archives gives his date of birth as 5th October 1885, i.e. he would have been 17 years old. His actual date of birth was a year later, 5th October 1886 which would have made him 16 on enlistment.
I would be interested to know how old you needed to be officially to join the Marines as I'm wondering whether the mistake in year of birth was deliberate or accidental.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Managing someone else's DNA test on Ancestry
« on: Monday 04 September 23 16:50 BST (UK)  »
I have been set up as a manager for someone else's DNA test on Ancestry. I can see their test, matches and so on.
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that as manager, I can send and answer messages on their behalf but I can't for the life of me work out how to answer a message they have received.
Is this possible through the management of the test on MY Ancestry account? Or do I have to message using their account?
It would be much easier to do everything through my account as i have a subscription, the other person doesn't.
I hope this makes sense!
Thank you in advance.

The Common Room / Looking for a couple of births...
« on: Friday 01 September 23 19:25 BST (UK)  »
I wasn't really sure in which board to post this, so thought here is as good as anywhere.
I'm looking for the birth of Eliza Catherine Blake born 1817 in Valenciennes, France according to the 1891 UK census. I have checked the actes of birth  for Valenciennes and can't find any record for her.
I am also looking for the birth of her sister, Jane Eugenie Laurentine Maximiliene Blake born 1820 in Antigua. I have no idea on how to find a birth record of that date in Antigua!
The common thread is that their father, Andrew Blake was a surgeon serving with the 5th Regiment of Foot both in France and then the West Indes. Would there be any army records that might help?
I have searched the Army Pension records available on Ancestry for Andrew Blake's widow but they don't help with the births of his older children, just the younger.
Jane Eugenie also married an army Surgeon - Cornelius Francis Huthwaite. He died in Crimea but his army pension records don't help either.
Thanks in advance for any help.
