Armed Forces / Where can i find my Grandfather's Army (Hussar's) Service Records
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 22:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

My Grandfather Francis Edwards (1907-1978) was in the Hussar's and served in India, but Ancestry doesn't seem to find any Military records for him. He was born North Shields, County Durham, but he lived in Kent from the age of 3 for the rest of his life, if that helps.

Is there anywhere I can look other than Ancestry to find his army service record?

Canada / Ontario Marriage Lookup (1938-1945)
« on: Thursday 14 March 24 04:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find the marriage record for William Wright Edwards and Gwendoline Wanda McNab (Correction: Gwendoline Wanda Wilson) which happened somewhere between 1938 and 1946, and almost certainly (but not 100%) in Ontario. Ancestry doesn't seem to have it, but i know its there somewhere.

Are any of you expert Roots Chatters able to find it :-)

Kent / Searching for records for William Wright (1790-) of Rochester
« on: Sunday 07 January 24 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
Trying to find Birth, Marriage or ANY records or information on William Wright (my ggg grandfather) born around 1790, in Kent, possibly Rochester. I know his Wife was called Sarah, but I don't have a surname, or much other info on them or their family.

The only record I can find for him, is the 1841 Census, living at Parrs Head Lane, Rochester with wife Sarah Age 50 and 2 children, but that's it. That said, I believe his death was around Oct 1869, but that's just a guess based on most likely death record.

His wife Sarah appears in the 1851 and 1861 Census (wife of Bargeman), living at the same address, but William is not listed. Can any of you wonderful sleuths find any more records on William, that I might be missing?

Canada Lookup Request / May Elvington Edwards - Canada Lookup?
« on: Thursday 24 March 22 21:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

My Great Aunt (May Elvington Edwards) emigrated to Canada (age 18) in November 1929. She lived there her whole life until about 2003. I have a worldwide subscription for Ancestry, and apart from her Immigration form which says she was going to Hamilton, Ontario, I can't find any other trace of her.

I'm interested in any Marriage records, and birth records of children she may have had. She was born in May 1911, birthplace Kent in England, and was known to friends and family as Elvie.

Can anyone help find any Canadian records for her? TIA  :)

The Common Room / How to change a childs surname (1918-1921)
« on: Friday 18 February 22 09:59 GMT (UK)  »

With help from rootschat, I believe my Grandad (who's surname was always known to be Barrett), was actually born John Alfred French.

He appears to have been born illegitimate to a Rose French in Oct 1918 in London (no fathers name on BC). By 1921, John (now 3) and Rose were living with a William Barrett. She put the surnames for herself and John as "Barrett" even though she didn't marry William until 1924.

My question is, Rose's change of surname would have been legally recorded at the time of her Marriage, but what about John? Was she legally required to register his NEW surname, or could you just change it at will, with no legal process required?

Basically I was hoping his change of surname might be legally documented somewhere, to prove 100% that this is my Grandfather.

Hi all,

Can anyone correctly decipher the address on my Grandfather's Birth Certificate (attached)

It is written twice as place of birth, and the mothers address. It looks like 9 Leonmicks Terrace, Tynemouth, but looking at the old maps, that doesn't appear to be a match. Can anyone help verify the address. Many Thanks

Mark

Midlothian / Looking for Francis Edwards (Mariner) b.1836/7 in Newhaven
« on: Thursday 16 December 21 00:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm trying to track down my gg grandfather Francis Edwards (Mariner) born Newhaven in 1836/7 with father also called Francis Edwards (Mariner). I've tracked him back to his 1st marriage in 1857 (age 21) to a Phillis Dale in Sunderland , but nothing before that. He listed his birthplace several times as Newhaven, which i always assumed was the one in Sussex (which has drawn a blank) but recently I learned there is one in Edinburgh too.

The Edinburgh connection seems to fit better with him and his father being Mariners, and him living around Sunderland which is much closer than Sussex.

Can someone do a lookup for me and see if there are any matching Francis Edwards (with same named father) in the Scotland Censuses of 1841 and 1851?

Or advise on any Mariner related records from that era

Many TIA :-)

Midlothian / Who was B.M. "Betty" Robinson (nee Bulcock)
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 13:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

So i've just discovered a 2nd marriage of my ancestor Henry Robinson to a B.M. "Betty" Bulcock on 2 September 1915, which was reported in the Aberdeen Press, but they returned to Henry's home at 2 Shandon Road Edinburgh after the wedding. I'm trying to find the official marriage record, and who B.M. "Betty" Bulcock was, but havn't had any luck.

I'd also be interested in any death records of either, but can't seem to find those either. Henry was 58 in 1915, so i guess his death would have been sometime between 1915 and 1955 ish.

I've attached the newspaper article for reference..

Family History Beginners Board / Help on Will request - Folio numbers?
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 12:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Sorry if this isn't the correct area to post this, I couldnt' see a probate or wills section?

So I tried ordering 2 wills from the .gov Probate site for the first time. There was a section that said to enter the handwritten "folio" number if this value is known. However this number wasn't present on either of the 2 records on Ancestry's Probate index, so i didn't enter them.

I had my wills order completed today. Whilst one was successful, the other was rejected, because I didn't include a folio number. Which is odd as the successful one didn't have a folio number either.

So my question is how do i find the Folio number? If it helps, the Will I am trying to obtain is for John Robinson of Gazegill, Gisburn in the county of York who died 1 Mar 1891, and proved at Wakefield on 25th April of the same year.

TIA

Mark
