Staffordshire / James Thomas Lee Wolverhampton
« on: Thursday 31 May 18 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for anyone who can help me with a James Thomas LEE born abt 1830 Wolverhampton. The story goes that he emigrated to Australia, around 1852-4 with either his brother and a friend or with his family.

We can certainly see him in Victoria, Australia, where he starts a family with our ggg grandmother and creates a whole lot of Lee descendants in Australia. He becomes an engine driver, and so do several of his sons. But we can't find his shipping records or those of a brother or any other family members.

I can see a baptism of a James Lee on 25 May 1831 at Saint Peter Collegiate, Wolverhampton, Stafford, England with parents Edward Lee and Ann. His death certificate in Victoria Australia has his Parents listed as Edward Lee and Ann Bagley. I can also find an 1851 Census with a James Lee living as a lodger with a Greatrex family still in Wolverhampton while working as a pudler. This if it him,is possibly just the year or two before his travel.

I am just wondering if anyone else is related to this family and can help me.
Thanks in advance.

Australia / South Australian Marriage HALLS DRYSTER 1883
« on: Monday 20 February 17 01:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find information on this marriage which took place in Teworie, South Australia under the Baptist rites on April 7th 1883. I can't seem to find it listed.
The names were Walter Edward HALLS and Mary Alice DRYSTER.

I am particularly looking to see if I can see any further information on Walter, DOB, previous marital status, parents country of birth, place of residence or anything that can tie him into the Walter Halls that I am looking for. I know that South Australian certificates have less information but I can't even find it listed.

Thanks in advance. :)

Ayrshire / Hugh Tait b1828 Saltcoat
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for any help regarding this Hugh Tait born around 1828 in Saltcoat. He was my gg grandfather who arrived in Aust around 1853. From the details I have been able to find, he was a Fireman in the Merchant Navy and I have a copy of his sign on document issued March 1845 as an "apprentice" "age - 17. DOB -1828 Place of birth Saltcoat Ayr"  He then came to Aust somewhere around 1853.

I have no record of his parents or any other family members. I can find no record of his birth or baptism and wondered if anyone has any info on his family living in Saltcoat area around this time.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wharfedale Times or similar August 1906
« on: Monday 25 August 14 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I knew my great grandfather died in 1906 but today I found an article in the "Manchester Courier Lancashire General Advertiser" 22nd August 1906.

It says that Thomas RUDDOCK was found in a field at Otley his throat had been cut and a razor was found near by.

I was wondering if anyone has access to any old local papers that may shed more light on the incident.

His wife had died in the June 1906, I had bought her certificate and found she died of an infection about 6 weeks after the birth of her 5th child. So whether the strain and stresses were just too much for him or whether he met with foul play.

It has been a difficult tree to follow as Thomas changed his name in the 1870's when he joined the Royal Marines and he married and had 3 of the children under the assumed name, then moved back to his home town and reverted to the name Ruddock. After his death the children were farmed out to half cousins etc and my grandfather came to Aust in 1914 at the age of 18 and he died in a car accident 1949. So it is all taking a bit of work.

Australia / Hugh Tait born Scotland 1829 died West Melbourne 1889
« on: Saturday 15 March 14 04:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I am particularly looking for descendants of Hugh Tait who arrived in Victoria around 1853. Married Agnes Wilson in 1857 and died in his home in West Melbourne in 1889 aged 60. He worked as foreman of the West Melbourne Gas Company from 1862 and had quite a large family.

I am descended through his second child Henry Joseph and I am hoping someone from the family may be able to help with any "interesting" bits of information.  I like to put flesh on the bones of my ancestors and unfortunately Hugh needs a bit of bolstering.

I have certificates and newspaper articles but am more interested in contacting someone from the extensive family who may have photos or anecdotes to share.
Cheers

England / Emmigrating to Australia from Antwerp
« on: Sunday 19 January 14 02:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have a person in my tree who says on documents in Australia that he was born in Staffordshire, the shipping records I can find indicate that a person of the same name has emigrated from Antwerp.
I have seen mention of other English migrants leaving from Antwerp when I searched but no explanation.
The date of departure was 1903 and I was just wondering if it was a common trend to cross the channel first and then depart for Australia.

Cheers

Limerick / Sergeant Ready 1839
« on: Monday 22 April 13 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

A strange request but I like a bit of back story. I am researching a convict ancestor who was transported to Australia for stealing a sum of money from a Sergeant Ready, he was tried in Limerick in 1839. It was his first offense. My ancestor was described as a pedlar on some convict records and a shoemaker on others.

What I found interesting is that most convicts stole a pound or two and were repeat offenders. Not so my fellow. He went all out and stole only the once but took 11 pounds and 5 shillings.

I just was wondering who Sergeant Ready was, to have such a large sum of money in 1839.
